Basic Trope: A genius is much more interested in their chosen field than romance and sex.

  • Straight: Bob is a brilliant scientist and is single with no interest in women.
  • Exaggerated: Bob is the smartest man alive, and he believes Sex Is Evil.
  • Downplayed: Bob is somewhat interested in romance, but he puts his work first and isn't too upset he hasn't found a girlfriend.
  • Justified:
    • Because Bob didn't focus his energy on romance, he was able to study and become very smart.
    • Bob is asexual.
  • Inverted:
    • Bob is a brilliant scientist and The Casanova.
    • Bob is a total idiot who has no interest in romance.
  • Subverted:
    • Bob seems more interested in his work than women, but it then it turns out he just needed a woman who liked science as much as he did.
    • Bob turns out to be secretly gay.
  • Double Subverted: Bob's relationships fizzle because he ultimately cares only about science.
  • Parodied: Attractive women regularly lie on Bob's lab table as he ignores their advances to do his work.
  • Zig-Zagged: Bob sometimes seems interested in romance, sometimes not.
  • Averted: Bob is a brilliant scientist with a normal amount of interest in romance.
  • Enforced: The producers are very sure nerds can't get laid, but don't want the show to look mean to intellectuals, so they make the intellectual character celibate.
  • Lampshaded: "I wanna date a scientist, but they only care about work!"
  • Invoked: Bob is raised to believe romance is a "distraction" from his work.
  • Exploited: Bob is sent to deal with The Vamp because he's invulnerable to her charms.
  • Defied: Bob's friends stage an intervention so Bob can have some fun and not be a workaholic.

  • Deconstructed: Bob's single-minded focus on his work at the expense of all else is bad for his mental health.

  • Played for Laughs: Bob is an Accidental Pornomancer who has to fend off the advances of many women. His friends are all jealous.
  • Played for Drama: The story is about Alice, who has a hopeless crush on the uninterested Bob.
  • Played for Horror: Bob is a Mad Scientist who thinks everyone should be like him and tries to eliminate love and sex from the world and perpetuate humanity through artificial insemination.
