Basic Trope: A monster burps after eating its victim, to show that the victim is gone for good.
- Straight: A monster eats Alice and burps after doing so, meaning she is most likely not coming back.
- Exaggerated:
- The monster's burp is so loud that it shatters every window in a large radius, sets off numerous car alarms and even causes earthquakes.
- The monster burps several times.
- Downplayed: The monster hiccups after eating Alice.
- Justified:
- Alice gave the monster indigestion.
- The monster swallowed a lot of air while eating Alice.
- Inverted: Alice slays the monster, eats it, and burps after the feast.
- Subverted:
- Alice manages to slice through the monster's stomach as it's preparing to burp.
- The monster eats Alice and burps, but then she slices it open.
- Turns out the burp was actually a pre-vomit belch, and then the monster vomits Alice up.
- The Monster is actually a robot, and Alice is actually alive inside its belly. The burp sound was just a built-in feature triggered by a sensor.
- Double Subverted: Another monster then eats Alice, and she doesn't manage to escape. And that monster also burps.
- Parodied:
- The monster says "Excuse me" afterwards and wipes its mouth with a napkin.
- The local Gasshole takes that as a challenge.
- The monster has trapped wind, so it deliberately eats obvious Red Shirt characters so it can burp.
- Zig-Zagged: Every member of the Five-Man Band is eaten by the same monster. It burps when it eats Adam, Beth, and Carol, but not Alice and Bob.
- Averted:
- The monster doesn't burp after eating Alice.
- Alice is not eaten.
- There's no monster.
- Enforced: “Our hero just got eaten in this adventure comedy. We need to add some Toilet Humor to lighten the mood.”
- Lampshaded:Alice: Gross! If you're gonna eat someone, at least show some manners!
- Invoked: Alice causes trouble in the monster’s stomach, hoping that it will vomit her out.
- Exploited: It turns out the monster stopped while burping, so Bob gets the drop on it and avenges Alice. Or he rescues her from its stomach on the off chance she's still alive.
- Defied:
- The monster eats foodstuffs that are good for its digestion.
- Alice refuses to be swallowed and says, "You're not making a meal of me!"
- Even after the monster burps, Alice climbs back up its throat, pries open its mouth, says, "I may be down, but I'm not out!" and escapes.
- Discussed:Bob: Don't panic, everyone, it's just a burp! I mean, it's not like it spat out her bones.Alice (from inside the monster's belly): Don't say things like that!Bob: See? She's fine.
- Conversed: "What's the burp supposed to mean? Is it supposed to imply Alice was digested? That's a bit too fast for that, isn't it?"
- Played for Laughs: Alice is eaten by a monster, who then burps. Then Alice burps from inside the monster's belly and says "Let's see you beat that one!", or she simply says "I'm Okay!"
- Played for Drama:
- As the monster eats Alice, Bob slowly looks more and more horrified until the monster finally burps, at which point he collapses in despair and yells "NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"
- Alice was pregnant and she and Bob looked forward to being parents. Or she already has one or more children, who will now have to grow up without a mother.
- Alice was the Big Good or The Heart, and after she becomes dinner, the other heroes become despondent.
- Played for Horror: The monster's burp is intercut with Alice's point of view of of the inside of its belly with the remains of many heroes it's eaten before.
