Basic Trope: A work ends with the characters in a tight spot and never reveals their fates.

  • Straight: The movie Tropetown ends with the The Team being trapped in their Local Hangout by the Tropetown angry mob calling for their blood because Bob accidentally destroyed the statue of the town's founder. The final shot is of the angry mob breaking down the door with torches and pitchforks and The Team cowering in a corner.
  • Exaggerated:
  • Downplayed: The final shot is of The Team running away from town and of the mob forming on the other end of town.
  • Justified: The movie is a Mockumentary, and The Team tells the cameraman to cut off before their dramatic last fight for this reason.
  • Inverted:
  • Subverted:
  • Double Subverted:
    • Tropetown actually ends with the judge about to deliver the verdict.
    • Tropetown 2 actually only shows an Imagine Spot of someone trying to piece together the original gang's fates, which turn out to be inconclusive.
  • Parodied: Tropetown ends with Bob's ice cream cone about to hit the floor, complete with a Big "NO!".
  • Zig-Zagged: Tropetown ends just before The Team goes out guns blazing, except there is a post-credits scene showing them alive and well, but then they get attacked again with another freeze-frame, but then the frame unfreezes, showing their horrible and painful death.
  • Averted:
  • Enforced: Test audiences reacted negatively to seeing The Team actually get killed by the mob, so the creators cut the scene out.
  • Lampshaded: "I wonder if we'll be able to get out of this...."
  • Invoked: "Turn the camera off! No one wants to see our deaths!"
  • Exploited: The mob decide to tell the world how cowardly The Team are after they kill The Team, ruining the reputation of The Team.
  • Defied: The Team calls The Cavalry to kill the mob, and they make it out alive.
  • Discussed: "Yep, this it. We go out guns blazing, and everyone gets to see it."
  • Conversed: "Oh, they did the Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid ending. Neat."
  • Implied: Tropetown ends with the The Team driving out of town, but Alice notes that the mob might catch up to them if they stop for the night somewhere.
  • Played for Laughs: Tropetown ends with Bob trapped inside the same room as his Abhorrent Admirer and him charging towards her with full intent to somehow get the key out of her Victoria's Secret Compartment with the same gravitas as giving a firing squad a final "fuck you".
  • Played for Drama: The last thing we see of The Team is them deciding to go out guns blazing... because they are hurt so bad they are going to die anyway even if they somehow manage to get away, know the mob is so blood-thirsty that the chances of doing so are slim, and so at the very least they won't give it the satisfaction of humiliating them before the kill. The final frame of the film is a very brief shot of The Team's bodies as they begin to flinch from being blasted a hundred times each.
  • Played for Horror: Tropetown ends with Bob as the Sole Survivor of a Trapped-with-Monster Plot... and him having a few seconds to breathe easily before he discovers that he's now surrounded by several hundred of the damned monsters, pissed off that he's wandered into their den...
