Playing With / Baby's First Words

Basic Trope: A baby says their first word/s.

• Straight: Alice and Bob go to wake up their baby daughter Carol, who has never spoken before. She says, "Mama."
• Exaggerated: Carol, who has never spoken before, suddenly says, "Good morning, mother and father. May I have some breakfast, please?"
• Downplayed: Alice and Bob are taking a walk with Carol, when a cat walks by. Carol says, "Diddy dat", obviously meaning "Kitty cat".
• Justified: Carol is not deaf or mute and she's at the age where babies learn to talk.
• Inverted: Carol is an old woman dying and says her last words.
• Subverted: Alice thinks Carol is saying, "Mama" until the doctor reveals that Carol is just babbling.
• Double Subverted: Then, she says, "Dada" while clearly pointing at Bob.
• Parodied: Alice and Bob mistake Carol's actual first word for gibberish and vice versa.
• Zig-Zagged: Carol frequently says what sounds like "Mama" in the episode, but no one can agree on whether she's actually talking about Alice or if she's just babbling.
• Averted:
  • There are no babies.
  • Carol has already said her first word before the events of the series.
  • Carol never speaks.
• Enforced:
  • "We haven't given baby Carol much screen time lately. How about we have her do something cute to make up for it?"
  • The baby playing Carol spoke, so the producers decided to Throw It In!
• Lampshaded: "Bob, she's talking!"
• Invoked: Alice and Bob talk to Carol a lot, hoping she'll learn to speak. Baby See, Baby Do, right?

• Played for Drama: Carol says, "Mama" for the first time after being taken away from Alice by Dr. Evilson.
• Played for Horror: Carol is possessed, and her first words end up being "Prepare to die!"
