Basic Trope: A character isn't allowed to do something, and is given a much more boring alternative.

  • Straight: Carl wants to go on the newest roller coaster at the theme park, but his parents Alice and Bob won't let him because he's not tall enough. They do let him go on the slow-moving kiddie coaster, though.
  • Exaggerated: The alternative that Carl is given is something such as watching grass grow, or paint dry.
  • Downplayed: Carl ends up having to go on a different roller coaster, and while he's a little disappointed because he wasn't able to go on the coaster he wanted to ride, he ends up finding the other roller coaster somewhat fun anyway.
  • Justified:
    • Alice and Bob really hate fun.
    • Alice and Bob want their son Carl to be safe, and think that the activities he wants to do are too dangerous.
    • Theme parks have height requirements for good reason, and Alice and Bob understand this, but they still want to do something nice for Carl anyway.
    • Carl is being punished for something.
  • Inverted: Carl wants to go on a simple kiddie ride, but his parents take him on a thrilling roller coaster instead.
  • Subverted: ???
  • Double Subverted: ???
  • Parodied: ???
  • Zig-Zagged: ???
  • Averted: Carl gets to ride the new roller coaster.
  • Enforced: ???
  • Lampshaded: ???
  • Invoked: ???
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied: Even if Carl can't go on the ride he wants, Alice and Bob decide to let him do something he'll enjoy instead of making him do something boring.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: "Do they really think Carl wants to go on that ride? That looks boring!"
