Go To

Basic Trope: A character who looks human but may or may not actually be a human.

  • Straight: The show's main ensemble consists of Alice the human, Bob the android, Charlie the dog, Zarak the alien, and a strange man named Thilg, whose species is unclear. He looks exactly like a human but then again, they have encountered some pretty Human Aliens in the past, he speaks with a strange nasally monotone and says a strange nonsense phrase instead of "hello", he seems a bit clueless about the way normal humans behave culturally and has strange ways of doing everyday things, at times he's implied to be telekinetic, and of course "Thilg" is an unusual name for a human, but then again, we never find out if he's actually telekinetic, or if he is, if he's a human that was given powers or a...what. He might be an alien, a human raised by aliens, or just a Cloud Cuckoo Lander.
  • Exaggerated: Thilg appears to be made of or covered in technology, so we don't find out if he's a robot, a cyborg, or someone in a strange outfit, and if it's the latter, is he a human in a strange outfit, an alien in a strange outfit, or what?
  • Downplayed: The only difference between Thilg and creatures who are definitely humans is his unusual name, but that alone leaves some people unsure.
  • Justified:
  • Inverted: Thomas is a person-sized speaking llama, but we never find out whether Thomas is a speaking llama or a human in a llama costume.
  • Subverted:
    • One episode reveals Thilg is a human.
    • Or... it reveals that Thilg is not human.
  • Double Subverted: But another episode reveals he may be a Half-Human Hybrid and that is left ambiguous.
  • Parodied: Thilg is obviously human and has a birth certificate from Earth, but since he says things like "zoogy woogy!" every now and then, the characters can't be completely sure.
  • Zig Zagged: Several episodes almost reveal what Thilg is but never do.
  • Averted: Everyone is clearly either human or not.
  • Enforced: The writers are not allowed to reveal Thilg’s species, because the ambiguity is a major source of humor in the show.
  • Lampshaded:
Alice: "How could Thilg have let himself get so distracted he forgets this one simple instruction?"
Zarak: "Well, as your species says, to err is human."
    Alice: "But is Thilg human?"
  • Invoked: One of Thilg's superiors tells him to never reveal what species he is.
  • Exploited: One of the antagonists is prejudiced against humans, but because they don't know Thilg's species, they don't go after him, meaning Thilg can work with Bob and Zarak to protect Alice.
  • Defied:
    • Thilg proves his species.
    • Someone kidnaps Thilg and performs experiments and tests on him to figure out what species he is.
  • Discussed: Alice, Bob and Zarak have a whole conversation about just what Thilg might be.
  • Conversed: "So I've been watching this series and Alice is a human, Bob is an android, Zarak is an alien and Charlie is clearly a dog, but this Thilg character...I sometimes wonder about him."
  • Deconstructed: Thilg's unclear nature causes him to be constantly treated with confusion and distrust by beings of all types. Even Thilg himself doesn't know what he really is, and suffers from an identity crisis as a result.
  • Played for Laughs: Alice is filling out a form for Thilg for some reason and writes, "unknown" in the "species" category.
  • Played for Drama: Thilg is severely injured but nobody knows how to treat him due to not knowing his species.
