Basic Trope: The option to adjust the severity of inappropriate content.

  • Straight:
    • Troper Wars 2 has an option to turn off blood and bleep out swear words.
    • The webcomic Troper Tales allows readers to choose between SFW and NSFW versions of the comic.
  • Exaggerated:
    • Troper Wars 2 has a menu with a long list of every inappropriate thing in the game that the player can toggle on or off, ranging from removing blood to replacing alcoholic drinks with soda to removing cigarettes from certain characters' models to being able to choose what particular words to bleep out from a list of all swear words.
    • Troper Tales has an option that goes from being heavily G-Rated to practically being a porno with so much violence, cursing, and sex.
  • Downplayed: Troper Wars 2 has an option to reduce the amount of blood when enemies are shot, but not to completely eliminate it.
  • Justified:
    • Turning off blood causes the characters to switch to non-lethal weaponry. For convenience's sake, it takes the same amount of shots to incapacitate an enemy as it would to kill them with a regular weapon.
    • The player can choose to play as one of two soldiers, one who is a Sir Swears-a-Lot.
    • The whole Censorship mode is actually a simulation of the whole adventure that takes place in the Single Player Campaign. It's either low poly or full on wireframe, and the blood is replaced with sparks. Also, there's no dialogue, and therefore, no swearing.
  • Inverted: Troper Wars 2 has a cheat code that increases the amount of blood produced by enemies.
  • Subverted: Troper Wars 2 has an option to turn off gore, but enemies still bleed when shot.
  • Double Subverted: One boss later in the game has a particularly gruesome death scene that is replaced with a normal death animation if gore was turned off.
  • Parodied:
    • Disabling gore causes the blood to be replaced with flowers, and the enemies' screams become laughter.
    • Troper Wars is set in the 1990s using real people from the time period. Disabling gore causes all portraits of Al Gore to be replaced.
    • Swear words are bleeped out even when they're part of a larger word. For example, bleeping out 'ass' when 'pass' is said.
    • There is an adjustable censorship but it only censors a few completely innocent words, leaving swear words and slurs intact. It also adds Censor Box on noses and necks while not censoring any other body parts.
    • The censorship filter makes words to be partially censored to make them sound worse. For an example, words "fork", "forget" and "cent" are replaced with "f**k", "f***t" and "c**t".
    • An Ultra Super Happy Cute Baby Fest Farmer 3000 is loaded if you attempt to turn on censorship.
  • Zig Zagged: Disabling gore only stops certain enemies from bleeding.
  • Averted: There is no option to remove blood or swearing.
  • Enforced:
    • "Troper Wars 1 sold well, but some players complained that the gore and swearing was too much for them. Let's add an option to remove these things in the sequel so we can sell our game to younger players."
    • The producers know that they can't prevent kids from playing a game bought for their parents or older siblings, so they provide the buyer the means to control how much content said kids are exposed to.
    • The work contains some hard topics that may be triggering for some users, so the producers added an option to remove the potential triggering content if the user desires.
    • Different countries have different standards on what is and is not acceptable to include in games and they must be passed by that country's review board in order to be allowed to be sold — one country may be fine with gratuitous amounts of gore and violence but comes down much harder on sexual content; another country may be the other way around. Hard-coding caps on those limits that can be tailored to each country means it's relatively straightforward to adjust the game to satisfy that country's standards.
  • Lampshaded: A text pop-up appears that says, "If the blood is making you uncomfortable, you can turn it off in the Options menu."
  • Invoked: A boss in the game has fourth-wall breaking capabilities. The boss temporarily enters your options menu and turns on censorship.
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied: ???
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed:
"Is it really okay for you to be playing Troper Wars 2 with your little sister?"
"Don't worry, I turned off the blood and swearing in the options menu."
