When they say that hunters "die the greatest deaths," they aren't kidding

  • After they encounter the Red Bluster, Jacob and Maisie fall into the sea after the ensuing fight. While underwater, Maise gestures for Jacob to look below them. Jacob turns to see the massive sea beast is right there staring at them, completely still, making for an incredibly unsettling shot. The camera then switches to give us a full frontal view of her creepy stare before she slowly fades into the darkness behind her, her gaze never wavering.
  • Captain Crow's Sanity Slippage is terrifying to behold. He starts out a genuinely loving and caring father figure to Jacob, but as his hatred of Red and his obsession to preserve the hunter lifestyle gradually consumes him he grows more and more unhinged, finally even willing to threaten Maisie's life and attack Jacob.
  • The Giant Enemy Crab that tries to eat Jacob's boat, complete with a truly terrifying and grotesque maw ringed in multiple circular rows of teeth.
  • Red destroying the Imperator is nightmarish to behold, especially considering we've come to see her gentler side at this point. Her furious roaring while Maisie helplessly pleads for her to stop makes it very clear that, unlike Toothless, she's nobody's pet and friend: she is a powerful wild creature who tolerates humans at best and will actively seek to destroy them if they even dare threaten her.
  • The monster that destroyed Jacob's ship when he was a kid. We don't know exactly what happened; all that we know is that the ship was burning, and appears completely obliterated underwater. Worse, we only catch a glimpse of the monster as a giant, striped grey beast with fearsome horns that could pass for either manta ray horns or insectoid mandibles. It's never named or ever appears again during the movie, making it one of the most mysterious sea monsters in the film.
  • Whatever happened to the Monarch. It's brought up several times in the movie; but while it's made pretty clear that the ship was sunk and its entire crew died (including Maise's parents and the General's brother), we don't know exactly *how* it went down, and what monster destroyed it.
