Nightmare Fuel / The Little Mermaid (2023)

  • In the "Wish" TV spot of the movie, the last shot debuting Melissa McCarthy as Ursula is spine chilling, along with her creepy Evil Laugh that would make the late Pat Carroll proud...
  • Remember how animated Ursula's "poor unfortunate souls" were turned into wormy prisoners in her lair? Here, judging by the skulls and full skeletons of merpeople, it's all but explicitly stated that Ursula straight up murdered them when they couldn't pay their ends of the bargain.
  • Much like the original film, the scene where Triton obliterates Ariel's grotto. The trident doesn't cause fiery explosions, which obviously wouldn't work underwater, but rips everything apart like depth charge detonations.
  • Instead of signing a contract to give up her voice, Ariel plucks off one of her scales, which shows a significant amount of blood coming out.
  • When Ursula transforms Ariel into a human, you can briefly hear her tail ripping in half!
  • When Ariel starts swimming for shore with her friends, the score turns eerie and ominous not unlike the sinister, whirring opening notes of Night on Bald Mountain as it goes back to Ursula revealing her extra spell. With how Ursula gloats that it's now only a matter of time before Ariel inevitably fails and is cast back into her fiery lair, the parallel between Ursula and freaking Chernabog of all people becomes more frightening.
  • Flotsam and Jetsam actually kill Triton by frying him with their electricity until he crumbles into bones and ashes onscreen, then letting the remains sink into the mysterious chasms below. He's revived later when his Trident touches his skeleton, but it's still an unpleasant sight.
  • Ursula's One-Winged Angel form takes things a step up by giving her glowing soulless eyes and gills across her face and making her look far more monstrous than her animated counterpart.
  • The shark attack at the start of the movie obviously now has a photorealistic shark attacking Ariel and Flounder, which is quite frightening and would not be out of place in a shark horror movie.
