Caution: Unmarked spoilers ahead!

Despite the cutesy, Animal Crossing-esque nature the game presents, later parts of the game show that this Sugar Bowl world is not all it's cracked up to be.

  • Even before you start After Story, you can find a book in the town hall library that's described as being full of gruesome illustrations of people of all ages being beaten and beheaded.
  • After Story is filled to the brim with this. To start off, the Man Eating Garbage is slightly creepy compared to most other enemies faced in the game.
  • After Story takes its first nosedive when Miles decides to eat a piece of cactus: he immediately starts tripping out, as fast moving text takes up the screen and he begins to have disjointed flashbacks to when he was human.
  • The first visit to Lecoco village has no sound, aside from the rain, and the village is virtually empty. You get your first sight of what the snack Bread's been eating does to someone in one of the houses: His eyes are wide open, he's colored in red and black, and he's erratically dancing, screaming about how good the leaves are. The other house has a young boy sitting in middle of the floor, crying as all the adults ran off and he's been left alone. Even if Miles tries to urge to boy to stay strong, a text box pops up noting that the boy has most likely used up all his strength.
  • The second you enter the garden nearby Lecoco Village, an intensely unsettling tune begins to play - as you continue to make your way through the garden, you pass by various other people affected by the leaves, their barely coherent screams popping up as you pass then by.
    • Patty and Miles finally reach the the garden where the snack is grown and encounter Sabers. The game is quick to note that they're a dangerous bunch, but Miles still gets their attention anyways. This results in one of the sabers, Sam, deciding to snap at the two and continually exposit to them, the already unsettling music slowing down as he gets angrier and angrier. Despite his apprentice trying to defend it, Sam attacks the two, nearly killing them both, and then decides to grab the other Sabers and go kill everyone in the nearby Villages.
  • The worst of it comes when you look through your neighbour's houses while Patty tries to escape from the village with Miles in tow.]]
  • John's continual rambling starts out disturbing, though a bit funny, before slowly becoming much creepier.
MARCH OR APRIL?!?! THIS PLACE LOOKS LIKE A MANSION TODAY! SO BEWILDERED! GOTTA CHECK THE TIME! BALLPOINT PENS! COME, CORNELIUS! COME TO SCIENCE CLASS! IT'S NO BIG DEAL, HUH? I WANTED TO GO TO HELL! WAS THAT ALL MY TEACHER TAUGHT ME? BALLPOINT PENS! I WAS NERVOUS! I WAS NERVOUS! I WAS HANGING BETWEEN LIFE AND DEATH! BALLPOINT PENS! BALLPOINT PENS! I WAS MURDERED! WAS IT NECESSARY? WAS IT DIRRRRRRRTY?! THAT'S STILL NO GOOD! MY HEAD IS RATLINNNNNNNG! LET ME DIE!
  • Vince and Irene are probably the least frightening compared to the others, but they also seem to be the only ones affected that are at least slightly aware of your prescence as they move towards you.
  • In Daryll's house, we find he's returned home to his family, all under the effect of the leaves. When he finally turns around and notices you, he threatens to beat you to death if you don't leave him alone.
  • Poor, poor Bread. He's much worse off than the others, with bulging eyes and even part of his brain exposed.
  • The worst of these happens to poor Glenda. Unlike the others, the music goes completely silent, replaced with the sound of something wet and crunching. Upon turning on the light, we find a Saber standing there, stamping on what's left of poor Glenda. Patty tries to back out of the shop, before accidentally knocking something over. However, instead of turning towards her and making chase, the saber stops, turns DIRECTLY TO THE PLAYER, as the camera zooms in towards him and an intense bit of music begins playing, slowing getting MUCH LOUDER. It suddenly cuts back to the other music track and Patty outside. However, the Saber will chase you out of the house as well, resulting in a one-hit KO if you're unlucky enough to run into him.
