Nightmare Fuel / Oggy and the Cockroaches

Go To

A lighthearted French cartoon show can't have these types of moments... right?

  • "Go Slow with Your Dough" has a rather disturbing scene near the end where Oggy, worn down by trying and failing to hide a mysterious, money-filled briefcase Jack entrusted him thanks to the cockroaches, spends the whole night hallucinating a plethora of demonic sounds, chiefly sinister laughter echoing around the room, before finally snapping and blowing up both his clock and the briefcase. While the remake swaps out the scene with him merely thinking about the cockroaches and their tricks, both episodes do a decent job in showcasing the immense Paranoia Fuel the poor cat is suffering.
  • Oggy believing that the cockroaches have suddenly grown big in "Oggy and the Giant Roaches" thanks to the binocular lenses stuck in his eyes. It's supposed to be Played for Laughs, but imagine if you were in the same predicament as Oggy and you were seeing real cockroaches instead of anthropomorphic ones...
  • In "Oggy and the Babies", Oggy takes in what appears to be cute kittens who turn out to be the kicked-out roaches in disguise. After he gives them the boot once more, he and Jack hear meowing. Thinking the roaches didn't learn their lesson, Oggy angrily marches outside, a broom handed by Jack at the ready, and proceeds to thrash the "kittens" with a broom while Jack laughs his head off... until the cockroaches show up, completely speechless at what they saw, to Jack's horror. In short, Jack inadvertently enabled Oggy to beat up real kittens, and can't tell him for fear of the consequences.
  • The sheer surrealism of the "Fantastic Voyage" Plot episode called "Globulopolis".
  • Aside from its Chinese and Hindi voice-overs, "The Ghost Hunter" is a prime example of an Oggy and the Cockroaches episode putting in a genuine effort to be scary.
    • The title card alone isn't any better; it consists of the ghostly trio in their skeletonal expressions, with the episode's title written in creepy, blood-like words.
    • The episode proper starts with the cockroaches getting flattened by Oggy wielding a frying pan while hiding inside a roasted turkey, which, unlike most of their usual Amusing Injuries, actually kills them.
    • Their facial expressions as the roaches' spirits emerge from their grave as well. From their arrival to the house all the way to haunting Oggy, they don't smile or laugh; they are just glaring at it with skeleton-like expressions, selling the idea that they are angry and shocked that Oggy would actually kill them for real. The music playing during this scene doesn't make it any less frightening.
    • The scene with the ritual isn't any better. With tornado-like clouds surrounding the house, and the entire thing being lifted into the sky and the roaches getting zapped, it could candidate for the scariest scene in the show.
    • The ending: Oggy has a truce with the cockroaches after reviving them. They watch another horror movie... but they forget to put away enchanted rug Oggy used for the process. As tornado-like clouds once again surround the house, the monsters from the movie end up coming to life and the episode ends with Oggy and the cockroaches screaming in terror, with zero indication of what happens next.
  • Joey taking his ex-girlfriend bee's stinger through the head in "Honeymoon". The grunt of pain only adds to it.
  • The ending of "Lost in Space" has Oggy getting rid of the cockroaches and watching television in his own spaceship... unaware that a space monster is grabbing onto a part of the ship, also with no indication of what is to come. The fact that an adventurous song plays during this part in the remake version doesn't help matters.
  • The ending of "The Joker Joked". After constantly scaring or hurting his date, Oggy gets dumped, and he acquires his real tuxedo and hat instead of the magic one he got given by accident. On the way back, he encounters a policeman he had angered earlier and, still having the wand from the magic suit, replaces him with his new ex. The end of the episode sees her Bound and Gagged on the back of his scooter, screaming as he speeds off. It is a massive Out-of-Character Moment for Oggy, not helped by his... unsettling expression upon switching the policeman with her.
    • Thankfully, in the remastered version, his date (now Olivia due to it being a remake) is safe and not gagged at all. It's instead implied that he just explained what happened and they made up.
  • Oggy's morbidly mangled Nightmare Face in "Face Off". Thankfully, we don't see what it looks like, but the other characters do, and judging by their reactions, it wasn't pretty.
  • The thalassophobia-triggering title card for the season 3 episode, "Scuba Diving". Just take a look for yourself.. The remastered version doesn't help either...
  • At the end of the season 3 episode, "Golden Eggs", Jack finds Oggy's pet chicken at the door when he arrives, and, though it's not shown onscreen, proceeds to kill and cook her, mistaking her for a wild one. When Oggy comes back from the bank and is about to eat what Jack has prepared, he freaks out at what Jack has done to his poor chicken and faints. And the last shot of the episode? We are treated to a close-up of the chicken's roasted corpse inside the oven!
  • Near the end of "The Mini Golf War", Jack is brutally mangled and deformed with his heart visibly beating against his twisted chest when a speeding train runs him over. It is a surprisingly graphic injury for the slapsticky nature of the show, and despite this, it's still Played for Laughs.
  • The ending of "Very Special Deliveries", where the entire postal area is overrun by spiders. No wonder Bob panicked.
  • The season 5 episode "The Intruder from Space" is a homage to the Alien franchise where it has Oggy and Olivia investigating a derelict space ship. When Dee Dee tries to eat an alien egg, a facehugger steals face before Oggy hunts it down. The alien metamorphosizes into a Xenomorph-like chicken monster which hunts Olivia and Dee Dee. After it's defeated, more eggs hatch in the ending.
