Nightmare Fuel / Groundhog Day

Go To

  • Yes, this is supposed to be Played for Laughs, but still, the concept of being stuck doing the same day for weeks, months or even years is absolutely horrifying.
  • Just how long was Phil trapped in the loop? There is no official number, but according to Word of God, it was likely around 30-40 years!note
    • It may have been even longer than that. 38 days are shown on screen, and Phil mentions at one point he spent 414 days just mastering how to throw cards in a hat. And that's without taking into account Harold Ramis saying that the original idea was for Phil to live February 2nd for 10,000 years...Nightmare Fuel doesn't even begin to cover it.
  • When Phil is driving with Ralph and Gus, it feels funny at first, Phil begins acting like he's crazy.
Phil: It's the same things your whole life. "Clean up your room!", "Stand up straight!", "Pick up your feet!", "Take it like a man!", "Be nice to your sister!", "Don't mix beer and wine, ever!". Oh yeah — "Don't drive on the railroad tracks!"
Gus: Uh, Phil... Th-that's one I happen to agree with...
    • Then a train comes. They dodge, but Phil acts like he's lost it.
Phil: (laughs) I'm not going to live by their rules anymore!
    Ralph: (terrified) I've noticed that.
  • Phil thinks the groundhog is causing him to loop, so he hijacks the truck carrying it and drives off a cliff.
    • The musical makes it worse, Phil steals the policeman's gun and uses it to kill the groundhog and then himself.
  • Phil killed himself so many times he could be a suicide consultant. Not to mention having to remember what his many deaths felt like.
    • As the film even shows, he'd never be able to get professional help because no doctor would believe him.
  • In the musical, the song Day Three has Phil freaking out when he realizes that he's in a "Groundhog Day" Loop. And the citizens are seen chanting "Phil!" as the song climaxes. Fortunately, it's directly followed by Stuck.
"Help me! Hello? Hello? Can anybody help me?"
  • The implications of what happens after the movie ends. Phil has spent several decades stuck on the exact same day to the point that he knows it by heart, and doesn't even have to think about what's going to happen next to him, the memories are ground into him, etched into his very soul. Now he is suddenly broken out of the loop, and has to once again start dealing with a world where he doesn't know what's going to happen next, and any mistakes he makes are permanent - no do-overs are coming the next day. There's no way that Phil isn't going to have some fairly major mental/emotional problems (definitely some PTSD), as he readjusts to a normal life.
  • The scene in which Rita has to identify Phil's dead body after one suicide indicates that every day branches off into a separate timeline, regardless of Phil looping back. This means more than several instances led to rather bad futures, going against Phil's perception that his actions will have no consequences. Not that he was even aware of these branching timelines to do anything about it.
  • From Rita's perspective in the "Golden" timeline, a male coworker at her new job has perfect knowledge of her likes and interests from time travel, and uses it to seduce her.
  • In a deleted scene Phil saves a little girl who was about to be run over by a truck. He warns her to be careful hinting that yesterday "you effectively ended your runaway model career" implying that Phil watched her die or be severly injured. Now imagine all the times Phil isn't there to save the girl...
