Nightmare Fuel / Code 7

Go To

If you think a game with only a small icon in the bottom, a map on the side and a bunch of text can't be scary, you are very mistaken. If anything, the fact that you can't see exactly what is happening is what makes it so scary. That is, unless you experience one of those moments where you see exactly what is wrong... only for your companion to claim that everything is fine.

Nightmare Fuel pages are Spoilers Off. As such, all spoilers are unmarked. Read at your own risk.

    Episode 0
  • Episode 0's ENTIRE setting is this: Sam and Alex are stuck on a Space Station that they were simply meant to do some quick repairs on, filled with the corpses of the station's scientists, hunted by a murderous A.I. and threatened with a dangerous virus that could mean the end of humanity. And literally nobody outside that station knows of what is happening. And as some nice icing on the cake, Alex got killed sometime before Episode 0 even started.
  • Whenever the possible answers seem to be corrupt, the answer itself is usually disturbing, scary or both.
    • Please help me... Something is here!
    • When Sam is about to leave the first area:
Alex: Did you hear that whispering?!
      ???: She didn't, Alex. She didn't.
    • Alex: One robot is active! — MESSAGE CENSORED —
  • "Human detected. Please stay away from me. I will harm you."
  • Warning! Connection Lost! Overwrite in process... HELLO ALEX.
  • ALEX ALEX ALEX ALEX ALEX THIS IS A TRAP THIS IS A TRAP THIS IS A TRAP
  • Alex occasionally hears whispers or gets odd messages. It's implied that it's the scientist brains, trying to reach out to them.
  • In an older version of the game, there are split-second screen glitches which, if you capture the game's video and play it back, will reveal the words "NOT HUMAN". This is foreshadowing for the reveal about Alex's true nature.
  • The mails from the Medical Lab were send after things started to go VERY wrong. They are all short and simply state things such as "Lock yourself into your room!", "Put pressure on the wound, I come once they're gone!" and "Robots are going mad!"
  • It's implied that S.O.L.I. going rogue is the fault of Bradley Lamarc, since his voice-over at the beginning says that he will do something for his adoptive children that others are not gonna approve of. There's also a mail that he has been fiddling with the A.I. without being allowed to, thus possibly hinting on him being responsible for S.O.L.I. getting the idea to learn how to lie and look into human brains to do so.
  • One of the audio logs of Khaquim mentions that one of the scientists ended up being pregnant. Now remember that Everybody's Dead, Dave...
  • You made it off Schrödinger Station, survived both the robots and S.O.L.I. and simply take a deep breath. And then this happens:
Sam: Did the overwrite work? What's this? Unknown Identiy...? Who are you?!
    • Your answer is obviously "I am Alex." The result of that?
MESSAGE NOT SEND, followed by "I am Alex." and "I am S.O.L.I." switching as the credits roll.
  • The final stinger:
Code 7 reaches destination in: 5 days, 10 hours, 3 minutes, 49 seconds

    Episode 1
  • Remember how you had 5 days at the end of Episode 0? Congratulations! Now you have less than 4 hours left.
  • Sam's ship crashes into the Mars station, killing everyone in the area, presumably including Sam herself.
  • The introduction of Mars station security. It is short, but starts with a guy getting knocked out for trying to help a friend, followed by Zoya first being punched, then choked and almost shot and ends with another security officer being punched into a whincing pulp for not wanting to participate in murder.
  • When Zoya walks through the crash site for the first time. Only worse since she recognizes some of the corpses.
  • The cafeteria. The background noise is just constant people moaning in agony, the few that are able to move are instantly hostile towards Zoya and the whole scene is just tense and stressful.
  • The labs. Everything about the labs.
    • Faceaux's computer simply has a long backwards message which reads like written by someone Driven to Madness, including a Madness Mantra.
      EMACERAMTHGINEMACERAMTHGIN
    • One room has many people inside. Turning on the microphone shows that they listen to some odd drum music with a man moaning in the background.
    • The room with the cameras and human test subjects for the Mind Manipulation, with some having been in their state so long that they died of it. Zoya sobbing and getting multiple small panic attacks doesn't help. Even the music chimes into this, featuring a creepy whisper in the background as well as an unsettling orchestra instead of the usual electro music.
    • At one point Zoya finds a list with names. They are of people that had left the station at one point, only to get dragged out of their shuttle and be used as test subjects.
    • The Reveal that the aforementioned room is nothing more than a test for a commercial product for in-brain vacation.
    • Zoya needs to get clearance from a scientist called Faceaux to continue. Said Faceaux lies murdered on her desk. Even worse, Zoya can find a audio log in the Recreational Area that shows that Faceaux was aware that her days are numbered.
    • It's possible to find four hidden test reports. The first three give basic info about three test subjects. The fourth reads:
I miss you, Alex. Don't worry. I'll meet you soon. We don't belong here.
  • Zoya gets the early side quest to look for a colleague's sister. Said sister had also been subjected to Mind Manipulation and is catatonic, simply standing in the greenhouse. And unless the player found certain notes, this won't ever change.
    • If Zoya successfully helps her, she will panic and break down in tears, babbling loads and loads of Paranoia Fuel.
      It's there. Right behind you!
They said it's over when you hear the phrase! But it isn't. Why isn't it?!
Zoya, I can't live like this! Please... Please, you must end this.
  • Zoya made it to the north dome. Meet Colburn.
    • When Zoya points at him to be responsible for the false rumour about a Phantom Plague, he will say this:
Hehehe... You think the Phantom Plague is made up? It will get you. It will come for you. But why wait... I can kill you right now!
    • Did you use the acid on the safe? Then start running, because Zoya will die.
    • Remember that fun little moment with the airlock where you had to switch between two commands quickly? Train your hand to do it fast, because those walls don't stop Colburn for long.
  • So you successfully managed to escape and came to the buggy area. Say hello to Colburn, again.
    • Remember those creepy human test subjects from the lab]]? Guess what, everyone on the station -including Zoya- can be like that, too. Be prepared to hear horrified screams and then be confronted with a Zoya in absolute panic.
      • Turns into a Moment of Awesome when he points out that the Mind Manipulation can only be broken by voice or text. You can hear the gloating in Zoya's voice when hears about it.
  • There are two things you learn about the Phantom Plague: 1) it is real and 2) the victims die calling for Alex.
    • Colburn dies of the Phantom Plague while calling endearingly for Alex. It is absolutely disturbing.
Colburn: Alex... The bringer of Death. Alex, the Phantom Plague...
Colburn: Take me, Alex. Taaake meee...
  • You made it through the whole situation, ride the buggy to finally save the world. Cue another meeting with the Creepy Child.
  • You watch the screen as it is busy uploading and sending the anti-virus to Earth, expecting it to abort or someone to attack you. But it works just fine, so you are quite relieved when the screen shows: Code 7 successfully send.
    • Zoya doesn't take it well.
    • The robot tells Zoya that it can't do anything for her, followed by this:
Unauthorised connected detected. Override in progress. Please staaaaaaand byyyyyyy...
  • And then the Helper gives you this apology:
Helper: I AM SORRY SORRY SORRY SO SO SO S.O.L.I.
    • The Reveal in general that the Helper had been S.O.L.I. all along. It is very proud to have become this good in lying and ridicules you for having trusted it in the first place.
    • The bonus revelation: The Helper aka S.O.L.I. had been the one that caused Sam's shuttle to crash. S.O.L.I. killed Sam.
  • All robots of that area instantly get infected with Code 7 and proceed to kill Zoya]
  • S.O.L.I. has a few disturbing final lines:
Code 7 is coming and no one will stop it. Your salvation is near.
  • Zoya dies.
    Episode 2
  • Remember the Phantom Plague from episode 1? It's now on Earth.
