Shinichi's father and friends want to force him into this role, aiming to keep him Locked Out of the Loop. For Yuusaku, this is all about controlling his son, under the guise of being concerned for his safety. Shinichi exploits this by playing into their expectations by pretending to be kidnapped by KID in order to trick his father and the Irregulars into showing their true colors.
This also contributes to the breakdown of his bonds with his friends, particularly Ran, who convinced herself that it was better to keep Shinichi 'safe' than for him to be happy. She becomes accustomed to dismissing his feelings, talking over him and treating him more like a fragile possession she needs to safeguard than an actual human being, turning their relationship into a Destructive Romance where Shinichi actively dreads being around her. This all culminates in Shinichi breaking up with her.
