Mythology Gag / Ghost in the Shell (2017)

Go To

Universal:

  • The surgeons from the opening sequence are wearing red smocks and gear. They're the same "Red Coats" as Section 9's lab technicians seen throughout the franchise.

Manga:

  • Lee Cunningham's fake memory of being a family man is taken from the original manga, except that the original character became hostile when Section 9 tried to tail the garbage truck. It also includes his despair while the Major is telling him that he's been living the bachelor life. His background is also a mix of the hacker trying to get away from Section 9.

1995 and 2004 movies:

  • The entire "Making of a Cyborg" scene from the start of the original movie is recreated in full in this film. Albeit without Kenji Kawai's iconic score that had been earlier teased for the film.
  • The Major announces that she's in position while standing on top of a building, right before taking off her coat and diving off. This has been recreated several times over since it showed up in the 1995 movie. The goggles worn over her head is taken from the original manga/1995 movie.
  • One of the ad signs seen in the city is "Locus Solus".
  • A hacked Geisha robot asks for Major to help her in a young woman's voice, just like the Gynoid does near the end of Innocence.
  • The climactic scene of the film involves the Major fighting against a giant Spider Tank, just like the original Mamoru Oshii film.
  • There are perfectly recreated shots of Newport City's skyline shown from Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence.
  • The Tilt-rotors have "feathers" that spread outward from their wings, just like the raven-like Tilt-rotors from Innocence.
  • Dr. Dahlin enjoys smoking while working around cyborg bodies, much like Haraway from Innocence. She also has the same interface augmentation behind her eyes as Haraway.
  • While Lee Cunningham is running away, the shot shows a plane moving in slow motion over the city. The plane in this movie is turned into a tilt-rotor, moving at much more believable speeds since he was still running in real time.
    • The scenes of Lee in the water, and the Major punching him, are also partial recreations from the scene in the first anime film.
  • Batou and Major have a conversation on a boat in the harbor, after she emerges from scuba diving, like in the first anime film. He also tried to offer the Major a can of beer.
  • After defeating the Spider Tank, Kuze drags himself up to Major's battered body, mirroring Project 2501 from the original movie. He's then killed by a sniper just like it was as well.
  • The absolute last scene in the film shows the iconic scene of Motoko jumping off a building, and activating her thermoptic camo while she looks up.

Stand Alone Complex:

  • The hostage crisis that takes place at the Maciej Hotel is from the episode "PUBLIC SECURITY SECTION 9". Except that the Major and Batou were the ones that took care of the most of the gunmen and hacked geisha robots.
    • The robot-geishas are practically matched shot-for-shot from the first episode as well. They even have white blood and are being controlled by a necrobox located on an adjacent building rooftop nearby.
  • Togusa is always wearing a dummy barrier from Stand Alone Complex around his neck.
  • Batou uses a public restroom with a window located next to the urinal, just like when Batou surprises and gets the jump on a goon in the "IDOLATOR" episode of Stand Alone Complex. Ladriya uses the window to pass him his shotgun since the bouncers in the entrance has X-ray scanners.
    • When the Major uses a dance pole to help her kick a gunman down, it's similar to how the Major in the same episode uses it to kick a combat android when raiding a hotel room in search of a suspect.
  • At one point, the Major is laying down on a bed, looking at her fingers, just like Motoko does in the Inner Universe OP for Stand Alone Complex.
  • Kuze's ultimate plan is to create a superstructure of sorts on the net, allowing people to upload their consciousness and exist without being confined to a body. This is exactly what he had planned in 2nd Gig. He even moves on ahead just before he's killed.
  • The data of Project 2571 that Dr. Dahlin examines is visually represented as a data node from Stand Alone Complex, only with a cubed design instead of circular. She even encrypts it with attack barriers right before Kuze kills her.
  • Section 9 is deployed via armored 4x4 truck, a reference to the Seishinkouki Company trucks seen in the SAC series.
  • The Major is sedated and strapped to a table, while Dr. Ouelet injects needles into her brain with the intent to kill her. This is how an assassin tried to kill her off in the first season of Stand Alone Complex.
  • Aramaki informs all members of Section 9 that a burn notice has been placed on the organization, much like the end of the first season of Stand Alone Complex.
  • The presence of two uniformed Section 9 officers saluting Aramaki after he arrives at S9 HQ is one for Solid State Society, especially on how its manpower has rapidly expanded.

Arise:

  • The Major's past suggests that she's the sole survivor of her family after they were killed in a bombing attack.
  • Major walks into a nightclub while wearing her red leather outfit.

Hybrid:

  • As mentioned above, the Major's jet-black hair invokes her hair from the anime movies while the shortness of the hair can remind one of the Major's hairstyle from the Arise OVA series. She even has blue highlights in her bangs.
  • In Stand Alone Complex, Batou mentions how animals seem to hate him for some reason. Here, he actually likes dogs, and feeds stray dogs scraps of food, including a basset hound he named Gabriel. After getting his cybernetic eyes installed, he fears that they won't like him anymore. He later adopts Gabriel, much like in Innocence.
  • The spider tank grabs Kuze by the head and begins applying pressure, intent on crushing his head. This scene is recreated from not only the original movie, but also Stand Alone Complex and Arise.
