S3RL (Music)

Jole Richard Hughes but better know as S3RL (December 17, 1981) is an Australian DJ and music producer who creates happy hardcore. He is from Brisbane and has received recognition through his songs include “MTC” and “Pretty Rave Girl”. He uses anime as his theme, and does Happy Hardcore in addition to preforming at festivals and other venues.

Since the early 2000s, he has released a number of songs and singles and his music has been used in the rhythm video game osu!.

In his personal life, he has a wife Jodie, and two sons.

I know this pretty trope girl! Always think about her! When she says "Hi" to me, examples go right through me!

  • Boastful Rap: In “All That I Need”, MC Riddle does two pompous rap verses of this nature to girl he's seducing.
  • Bowdlerise: He wanted to call his stage name "arserl" but changed it to "S3RL" so it can be said in non-profane contexts. It was said to have originated from being called "Arsehole" in his childhood.
  • Broken Record: “I know this pretty rave girl, always think about her! When she says “Hi” to me butterflies go right through me. When I see her dancing want to take the chance in, get in a little closer and maybe get to know her!” Is all that is said in “Pretty Rave Girl”
  • Bilingual Bonus: "Hentai" has some naughty lines in Japanese between all the moans, and the song is more enjoyable if you know Japanese.
  • Dogged Nice Guy: "Friendzoned" is about a guy who makes an effort to be kind to the girl he has a crush on, but she only reciprocates by having him listen to her disgraces. Instead, she prefers to sleep with an asshole.
  • DreamWorks Face: He has a habit of making this face in performances and pictures.note
  • Fat Slob: The cover art of "MTC" features a nude, morbidly-obese neckbeard who only seems to care about pulling a hentai girl from his computer screen.
  • Idiosyncratic Album Theming: S3RL doesn't have proper album, but he prepares mixes with the majority of them being titled with a variation of "S3RL Presents". These include "S3RL Now Presents", "S3RL Now Presents", "S3RL Also Presents", "S3RL F#@%!$Presents", etc.
  • The Immodest Orgasm: "Hentai" and "Fan Service" mostly consist of samples of loud moans which are remixed and autotuned around.
  • Letters 2 Numbers: S3RL is pronounced, “Serl”
  • My Eyes Are Up Here: “Shoulders Boulders” is about this, and the female singer Lampshades it.
  • Obsession Song: Every song of his is at least one of these about the singer lusting over their love interests and talking about nothing but them the whole time in the lyrics. “Pretty Rave Girl”, “MTC”, and “All That I Need” to name a few.
  • Perverse Sexual Lust:
    • “MTC” is about the singer wishing for a girl from hentai to have sex with everyday, and wanting to pull her from his computer screen. The song title, unsurprisingly, means “masturbate to cartoons” as said in the chorus, and it's lampshaded in the cover art.
    • In the videoclip for "Fan Service", several guys use virtual reality headsets and get really absorbed into admiring and groping fictional anime girls there.
  • Pixellation: The video for "Hentai" uses clips from hentai anime, and when they get to the explicit parts in the chorus, they are covered by mosaics. Despite this, it was taken down from YouTube, so S3RL re-uploaded the video with pixellation all the way through.
  • Punctuated! For! Emphasis!: “Stop! Staring! AT-MY-BOOBS!”
  • Refuge in Audacity: His music is generally based around being as sexual as possible and in the most awkward way, but his song "Bass Slut" is where this goes the hardest.
  • Sampling: "Pretty Rave Girl" samples "DotA" by Basshunter, which in itself, samples "Daddy DJ" by Daddy DJ.
  • Stock Scream: In “All That I Need” there is a faint Wilhelm scream heard briefly in the second rap verse.
  • Stylistic Suck: His music is self-proclaimed, “Happy Hardcore with a layer of cringe”, which is not far from the truth. The subject matter of every song is absurd and purposely bad.
  • Subliminal Seduction: Played with in "Back Track". The entire song is backwards. Reversing it turns up the song talking about how you backmasked it, and the techno segments turn out to be the breakdown of "Little Kandi Raver".
Can't believe that you did that
Not supposed to play it back

  • Toilet Humor: In the video for "Catchit", a Nyan Cat leaves a pile of rainbow-colored poop on the litter.
  • A Wild Rapper Appears!: Every song since 2019 contains a rapper which blasts a verse. However, the song, "All That I Need" contains the longest one from MC Riddle.
