Rory Webley (Music)

Rory Webley (born December 10, 2002) is an Australian Pop artist. He initially gained traction online for making covers of songs and posting them on his YouTube channel. Other than covers, he has also been making original songs, two of which have their own music videos. He mainly posts his songs on Bandcamp, but has released songs on Spotify too.

Rory Webley and his songs provide examples of:

  • Abusive Parents: The parents in the "Perfect Family" series of songs are outright mentally abusive. From encouraging an eating disorder to treating their children as trophies to show off, it's not hard to see why all their kids are messed up.
  • All Love Is Unrequited: In "Friendly Neighborhood Poltergeist", the ghost's affections are never returned.
  • Boy Meets Ghoul: Inverted in "Friendly Neighborhood Poltergeist" where the ghost is the one who falls in love with the living being.
  • Concept Album: "Are You Scared Yet?" is an album with the Central Theme of monsters and relationships.
  • Dead Sparks: "Something Super Sweet" is about a relationship where the sparks have died out but one side is still clinging on.
  • Destructive Romance: "Player 2" and "Buried Alive" are about unhappy one-sided relationships.
  • Did Not Get the Girl: The ghost in "Friendly Neighborhood Poltergeist" doesn't end up with his crush.
  • Dysfunctional Family: The family in the "Perfect Family" series of songs is this.
  • Flowers of Romance: The music video of "Friendly Neighborhood Poltergeist" invokes this trope twice. The first time when the ghost tries to give his crush a flower, the second time when his crush goes to her boyfriend who's holding a boquet.
  • Friendly Ghost: The ghost in "Friendly Neighborhood Poltergeist" does no harm and holds no ill intent.
  • Fun with Alphabet Soup: The music video and the official art for "Friendly Neighborhood Poltergeist" shows the ghost spelling "I love you" in his crush's letter soup.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: It's implied that the singer of "There's Something in The Water" was treated badly by his friend group.
''I resent that you made me feel less than you"
  • Haunted House: "Friendly Neighborhood Poltergeist" takes place in one.
  • I Warned You: The singer of "There's Something in The Water" tries to warn his friends multiple times but was drowned out and ignored by them.
  • Not Good with Rejection: The Boogeyman in "I'm The Boogeyman" does a Face–Heel Turn after being rejected.
  • Nothing Is Scarier: In "There’s Something In The Water", it's never stated how, why, or what exactly is attacking our character's friends.
  • Ode to Family: "Perfect Family", "The Perfect Family is Over", and "Sleepover" are songs about family.
  • Parental Neglect: It's implied that the child in "Sleepover" is being neglected. He stays up late, is allowed to eat lollipops all day, and is so lonely that he begs the listener to stay.
  • Poltergeist: Aside from the trope being in the name of the song, the music video of "Friendly Neighborhood Poltergeist" shows the ghost interacting with objects, such as moving lego bricks and alphabet soup letters to spell words.
  • Trophy Child: Gala Girl and Baseball Boy from the "Perfect Family" song series are trophy children.
  • Weight Woe: Played for Drama in "Gala Girl". The titular character struggles with anorexia and is implied to also be struggling with bullemia.
