That's what you get when you let your tropes win:
- Album Title Drop: "That's What You Get" is the only song on Riot! to contain the word "riot".
- Alpha Bitch: The girl in the music video for "Misery Business". She "gets hers" in the end when her cups get plucked out of her dress.
- Anachronic Order: "crushcrushcrush", to an extreme. The song has a narrative, but it's completely shattered.
- Grief Song: "When It Rains" is about a friend of Hayley who committed suicide.Oh, oh, how could you do it? Oh, I... I never saw it coming. Oh, I... I need an ending. So why can't you stay just long enough to explain?
- Longest Song Goes Last: "Born for This" (3:58) ends the main album. Downplayed in that all of the songs pass the three-minute mark.
- New Sound Album: Riot! is largely removed the post-hardcore influences in favor of a more alternative rock and Power Pop-oriented sound while still being emo pop punk at its core.
- Slut-Shaming: In "Misery Business", though it has resulted in
Creator Backlash in the years following the song.Second chances they don't ever matter, people never change
Once a whore, you're nothing more - Traumatic Haircut: The mean girl in the "Misery Business" video scissors the braid off one of her unfortunate classmates, to the classmate's dismay.
