Push th' little daisies and make em' come up!

Pure Guava is the third album by Alternative Rock band Ween, and the first to be released on a major label, Elektra Records. It's a direct successor to their previous album The Pod, continuing the lo-fi aesthetic that they've established with that album, except while replacing the slower, sludgier songs of the former with poppier, more upbeat tunes while still retaining Ween's trademark level of weirdness and vulgarity, making this their most commercially viable outing up to that point.

The album helped the band reach a wider audience, and it spawned their first album single, "Push Th' Little Daisies", which was a minor hit, being one of two singles from the band to chart. It spawned their first music video on MTV which was riffed on by Beavis And Butthead. "Push Th' Little Daisies" was, for a while, their most famous song, until The Mollusk's "Ocean Man" surpassed it in popularity.

See the Tropes, make me laugh:

  • Cluster F-Bomb: The ending of "Reggaejunkiejew" where Gene repeatedly chants "Fuck you!"
  • Content Warnings: The first Ween album to be slapped with one, though Elektra retroactively added one to The Pod when they re-released it on their label.
  • Continuity Nod: The Stallion (Part 3), the third part of a two-part song from the previous album.
  • Intentionally Awkward Title: "Reggaejunkiejew", "Flies on my Dick", "Touch My Tooter", and "Hey Fat Boy (Asshole).
  • Fake-Out Fade-Out: "Sarah" seems to end in the middle, only to suddenly come back and launch into a brief second verse.
  • Feedback Rule: Dean's mic feeds back when trying to sing a line in "I Saw Gener Cryin’ In His Sleep".
  • Fell Asleep Crying: Played for Laughs in "I Saw Gener Cryin’ In His Sleep".
  • Lighter and Softer: It's not as slow and sludgy as The Pod and overall has a lighter sound.
  • Lyrical Cold Open: "Big Jilm", "Flies On My Dick", "I Saw Gener Cryin' In His Sleep", "Mourning Glory",
  • Lyrical Dissonance: "Hey Fat Boy (Asshole)". Dean voices a character terrorizing an obese man, set over a silly-sounding tune.
  • Multi-Part Episode: "The Stallion (Part 3)" is a continuation of parts 1 and 2 from The Pod.
  • No Ending: "Reggaejunkiejew" seems to leap into another section at the end before abruptly cutting off. "Hey Fat Boy (Asshole)" also ends abruptly, with Dean's shouting at the fat man reaching fever pitch.
  • Noise Rock: "Mourning Glory". Holy shit, "Mourning Glory". It's a bunch of weird electronic screeches and feedback while some kind of spoken word story about pumpkins is told in the background.
  • One-Woman Song: "Sarah", about Gene's then-girlfriend, later-wife, and now ex-wife.
  • Precision F-Strike: In "Push Th' Little Daisies":
    Happier than shit
  • Pun-Based Title: "Mourning Glory", a pun on "Morning Glory", a type of flower.
  • Sampling: The radio edit of "Push Th' Little Daisies" censors the word "shit" from the line above with a sample of Prince squealing NO! from the opening of his song "Alphabet St."
  • Silly Love Songs: "Push Th' Little Daisies" and "Sarah".
  • Studio Chatter: After Dean's mic feeds back in "I Saw Gener Cryin’ In His Sleep", you can hear Gene yelling at him for messing up (again, apparently) in the background.
    • Someone says "Stop the tape!" at the end of "Mourning Glory".
  • That's All, Folks!: "Mourning Glory" concludes with some one yelling "STOP THE TAPE!".
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: "Reggaejunkiejew".
  • Toilet Humour: "Poop Ship Destroyer".
