Sound out! We are PRISTIN!note

Pristin (previously Pledis Girlz) was a South Korean Girl Group under Pledis Entertainment, consisting of ten members: Nayoung, Roa, Yuha, Eunwoo, Rena, Kyulkyung, Yehana, Sungyeon, Xiyeon and Kyla.

Most of the members appeared on Produce 101. Because they were two of the top 11 contestants, Nayoung and Kyulkyung debuted as part of the girl group I.O.I. They reunited with the others to debut as Pristin on March 21, 2017, with their first mini album 'HI! PRISTIN' and the single 'WEE WOO'. Like their labelmate group Seventeen, Pristin is known for writing and composing their own music.

Although the group was introduced in 2016 under the name Pledis Girlz (as a trainee group), they changed to Pristin when they debuted in 2017.

They were nominated for multiple rookie awards - New Artist of the Year, Best New Female Artist, Best New Artist etc. - and won four in total.

Their subunit Pristin V debuted on May 28, 2018 with the single album Like a V, the title track being 'Get It'.

The group disbanded on May 24, 2019, with only Kyulkyung, Yehana and Sungyeon choosing to remain with the company.

Tropes Related to PRISTIN:

  • Accidental Misnaming: Pledis released a Yehana teaser picture calling her Yehaha.
  • Alliterative Name: Kang Kyungwon.
  • Amusing Injuries: In the ending of WE LIKE when Pristin's mugshots are being taken, Yuha hits herself in the head with her sign after trying to look cool.
  • Ascended Extra: All 10 members appeared in or were back up dancers in various music videos before their debut. Now, they get to star in their own.
    • Xiyeon appeared in After School's 'Bang!', then performed a version of it that she arranged herself on Produce 101.
  • Big Eater: Yuha. Nayoung, Yehana, Sungyeon called her the "gluttony king", and Kyla also mentioned that Yuha eats a lot.
  • Big Little Sister: Kyla, the youngest member, is one of the taller members of the group.
  • Break the Cutie: Kyla has received a significant amount of hate due to her weight - she's not overweight per se, but is noticeably more heavyset than the other girls, and has even had her weight omitted from her official profile.
  • But Not Too Foreign: Kyla and Sungyeon are Korean-American, having been born in the United States. Kyla's father is Caucasian, with her mother being Korean, whereas Sungyeon's parents are both Korean.
  • Caps Lock: Pristin's name is usually stylised as 'PRISTIN'
    • 'HI! PRISTIN' has 'WE' and 'WEE WOO'
    • All songs in 'SCHXXL OUT' (and the album title itself) except for 'You're my boy' get the capslock treatment.
  • Catchphrase: "Sound Out! We are PRISTIN!"
  • Cover Version: As part of their debut project, Pristin covered Seventeen's 'Adore U', Girls' Generation's 'Catch Me If You Can', f(x)'s 'Rum Pum Pum Pum', and I.O.I's 'Very Very Very'.
  • Dancing Is Serious Business: When Kyulkyung was on Idol Producer as a dance mentor, she was nothing like the energetic, joyful girl she usually is. Mentor Jieqiong took dancing very seriously, to say the least.
  • Darker and Edgier: 'Black Widow' is a lot darker than the much sweeter, perkier 'WEE WOO', especially the vampire version.
    • Pristin V has a significantly darker concept than the bright and energetic concept Pristin has done before.
  • Distaff Counterpart: Being in the same label as Seventeen and NU'EST leads to many comparisons.
    • Especially since NU'EST used to be called Pledis Boys and Pristin was once Pledis Girlz. NU'EST members also went on the second season of Produce 101, like many members of Pristin in the first season.
    • Seventeen and Pristin are linked by having a self-composed concept, especially Sungyeon and Woozi.
  • Even the Girls Want Her: A large portion of their fanbase is female, and the gender ratios for their stages are around half male and female.
  • Fan Community Nickname: High, also written as HIgh, with the H and I capitalised. The name was announced on August 6, 2017. Kyulkyung explained that the name meant "that we want our fans to stay by our side as we rise to the top together."
  • Fairytale Motifs: Pristin V's teasers were released with names of fairytale villains like Queen Grimhilde, Evil Queen, and Maleficent.
    • They were released with a map with five marked locations on them; there were several staff dressed as those characters at the marked places.
  • Genki Girl: Altogether, Pristin are very loud and hyper, but the most notable examples would be Eunwoo and Kyulkyung.
  • Girl Group: A Korean Pop Music example.
  • Girly Bruiser: Pristin has a 'Power & Pretty' concept, meaning that they can be fierce and beautiful at the same time.
  • Height Angst: Rena is the shortest, standing at 5'4. Because Pledis has an image of having tall girls - to the point where Yuha auditioned because she was told that she seemed to fit in Pledis - Rena is often teased for her height.
  • High School: The entire concept of 'SCHXXL OUT, especially the "In" version of the physical album.
  • Honorary Princess: Xiyeon. Her first line in 'WEE WOO' translates to "I'm the princess of the house", which Sungyeon wrote because she's considered the "princess" of Pledis.
  • Idol Singer
  • I Have Many Names: Kyulkyung. Joo Kyulkyung is her Korean name, as her given name is difficult for Koreans to pronounce. Has also been referred to as Jieqiong (her Chinese given name), Zhou (her Chinese family name), and Pinky (an apparently self-bestowed nickname). After a long time of ambiguity on the matter, Pledis finally decided to use Kyulkyung as her stage name for her debut in Pristin.
    • Xiyeon also counts as this because she has Junghyun (her birth name), Siyeon (which she legally changed her name to), and her stage name of Xiyeon. She is also commonly called Ddiddi, a nickname which comes from her previous difficulty in pronouncing the 'x' of Xiyeon.
  • In-Series Nickname: The members call each other cute nicknames, often seen in their Vlives. They also double as Affectionate Nicknames
    • Nayoung: Nana. Roa: Roro. Yuha: Yuyu.
    • Eunwoo: Nunu. Rena: Rere. Kyulkyung: Juju.
    • Yehana: Hana/Oni. Xiyeon: Ddiddi. Kyla: Illa.
  • Jack of All Trades: The reason why they have no fixed positions as vocalists, rappers, etc.
    • Roa said: "All of the members are good at singing and rapping... The vocalists like to rap and the rappers are good at singing.” Rena explained that it was because they trained for so long, and therefore got to try everything and vary their talents.
    • A clear example of this is Xiyeon, who in Produce 101 showcased impressive high notes even though she was trained as a rapper, surprising everyone. Not to mention her role as a visual, her skills in dancing, being an MC and acting, etc.
  • Large and in Charge: The two tallest members - Nayoung and Roa - are the leader and sub-leader respectively.
  • The Leader: Nayoung. She was also I.O.I's leader.
  • Likable Villain: Rena's character for Pristin V was described as "[a villain] who you can't help but love." Pristin V as a whole has also been called this.
  • Malicious Misnaming: 'Yehaha' for Yehana. It was an Accidental Misnaming on her teaser poster but after hearing her whine about it, the members teased her about it.
  • Meaningful Name: Pristin is a combination of “Prismatic” and “Elastin,” the former meaning “bright and vivid,” and “elastin” meaning “flawless strength”, hinting at their "Power and Pretty" concept. Altogether, the meaning is: “We will become top stars by combining each of our charms that shine brightly.” Most of their stage names are also this, for example:
    • Yuha is a combination of 'yu' meaning happiness and 'ha' meaning great. Together, it means that she wants to bring a great amount of happiness to everyone.
    • 'Rena' in Hindi means light - she wants to become bright and colourful and captivate everyone.
    • Yehana said that Pledis gave her the name because it means "bringing all members' thoughts into one." She also said that she once thought it was a pun on her name because 'hana' means one, which sounds similar to the 'won' of Yewon.
    • Roa's stage name is a combination of 'ro' (meaning 'smile') and 'a' ('beautiful').
  • Meaningful Rename: Pledis Girlz became Pristin in their official debut.
  • Number Two: Roa is PRISTIN's sub-leader, and acted as the leader when Nayoung was busy with IOI.
  • One-Word Title: 'WE', 'Running', 'ALOHA', 'TINA', 'Spotlight'.
  • The Quiet One: Yehana said, in a Vlive with Sungyeon, that when she was a trainee she was this.
"I was so quiet! The unnies didn't even know I was there."
  • School Uniforms are the New Black: Pristin wear altered school uniforms often in performances and in photo shoots, especially for 'SCHXXL OUT'
  • Signature Laugh: Eunwoo laughs so loudly that she can be heard in the background of many Vlives, and it's so distinct that many fans can recognize her.
  • Singer Name Drop: The group does this in the intro to their songs, and also released the appropriately named "We Are PRISTIN".
  • Singer-Songwriter: All 10 members have been credited for either writing lyrics or composing their songs.
    • Yuha and Kyulkyung even helped compose fromis_9's 'Glass Shoes'
  • Some Call Me "Tim": Zhou Jieqiong turned into Joo Kyulkyung for easier pronunciation.
  • Spell My Name With An S: Rena prefers the romanization of her name to be "Yaebin", though most people write it as "Yebin".
  • Stage Names:
    • Roa for Minkyung
    • Yuha for Kyungwon
    • Rena for Yaebin
    • Kyulkyung for Jieqiong
    • Yehana for Yewon
    • Xiyeon for Siyeon/Junghyun
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Yehana and Sungyeon fight and bicker often, but are very close friends.
  • Xtremely Kool Letterz: Pledis Girlz and 'SCHXXL OUT'
