I'm a troper just for kicks now, let me kick it like it's 1986 now, might be over now, but I feel it still:
- A Million Is a Statistic: "People Say":What a lovely day, yeah, we won the warMay have lost a million men, but we've got a million moreAll the people, they say...
- Design Student's Orgasm: The cover of "Woodstock", which shows an old car on fire.
- Mascot: Tank Dog, a pink Rubberhose anthromorphic dog with a tank turret for a nose.
- Nightmare Face: The cover of "Evil Friends", which shows a demonic face with two tongues and several tears coming out of one eye spelling out EVIL.
- Non-Indicative Name: Despite their name, they are not from Portugal, rather they are originally from Alaska and now based in Oregon.
- Protest Song: "Who's Gonna Stop Me" is about the oppression of Native Americans.
- Retraux: "Woodstock", true to its name, is based on The '60s. "Feel It Still" in particular was based on "Please, Mr. Postman" by the Marvelettes.
- Self-Deprecation: They have official t-shirts that read "I liked Portugal. The Man before they sold out". Notably, they started selling these shirts right around the time their song "Feel It Still" started climbing the charts, which was in part due to its use in commercials.
- Special Guest: "Weird Al" Yankovic in "Who's Gonna Stop Me".
- War Is Hell: "People Say" is about how people don't seem to care about all the lives that were lost to win a war just because We Have Reserves.
- We Have Reserves: "People Say".What a lovely day, yeah we won the war.
May have lost a million men, but we got a million more.
