Persefone is a progressive/technical death metal band formed in 2001. Hailing from Andorra, one of the smallest countries in the worldnote , they have quickly risen to become one of the most respected modern extreme prog-metal bands in recent years and are largely responsible for increasing attention towards their home.
Originating from their nation's capital Andorra la Vella, their founding lineup consisted of bassist Toni Coy, lead guitarist and singer Carlos Quintanilla, rhythm guitarist Jordi Mateu, and drummer Xavi Perez. Completing their original formation was keyboardist and clean vocalist Miguel Espinosa, who joined in 2002. Setting out to create a complex and highly melodic form of extreme metal inspired by the bands they looked up to in their youth, they released their first demo before Perez left and was replaced with Aleix Dorca Josa. Their debut album Truth Inside the Shades was recorded during the next couple years.
Shortly after its completion, Carlos stepped down from harsh vocal duties while remaining on guitar, and the band recruited Marc Martins Pia in his place as their new frontman just before its release in 2004. This lineup would go on to create their sophomore album Core, released two years later, a concept album based on none other than Persephone, the Greek goddess they named themselves after. Josa would leave the band for personal reasons afterwards and would be replaced by Marc Marti.
Their third studio album Shin-Ken was released in 2009 and befitting of its title was based on the 1954 Japanese movie Samurai I: Musashi Miyamoto. To add more authenticity to its concept, the band received assistance from several small Japanese musicians who contributed to its production, additional vocals, and even lyrics, and it was distributed by record label Soundoholic Co. Ltd., who were responsible for the Japanese releases of several big metal albums before and since.
Though their first three albums were very well-received, their true breakthrough would come in 2013 with the release of Spiritual Migration. With a bigger recording budget and mastering done by high-profile Danish producer Jacob Hansen, the album improved upon their established formula and was subject to widespread critical acclaim, receiving praise for its extremely complex yet smooth-flowing songwriting, crisp production, lyrics, and tight performances. It appeared on numerous top 10 lists and was widely regarded as one of the best death metal albums of the year, and boosted their popularity almost overnight.
Their newfound recognition would not come without sacrifices, however. Marti stepped down in 2014 and founding guitarist Jordi would leave in 2016 after 15 years with the band. They were replaced by Sergi "Bobby" Verdeguer and Filipe Baldaia respectively, both of whom played together in the band Nami. This lineup would record Aathma, which released in 2017.
After independently releasing a re-recording of their debut album with their current lineup, they would sign with heavyweight metal label Napalm Records for the release of their sixth album Metanoia in 2022. This album would prove to be their most popular and revered to date, even moreso than Spiritual Migration. A year after its release, Marc Pia announced he had amicably departed from the band after nearly 20 years in order to focus on his family. Their live fill-in Daniel R. Flys was then revealed as the band's new harsh vocalist.

The band and their music provide examples of the following tropes:
- Concept Album: As part of their signature sound, all of their albums have an overarching theme:
- Truth Inside the Shades: The journey from life to death, and the stages of coming to terms with one's fate.
- Core: A retelling of the legend of Greek goddess Persephone, each act from the perspective of a different character (Demeter, Hades, and Core / Persephone herself in that order).
- Shin-Ken: The moral code of the samurai (bushido), taking inspiration from Miyamoto Musashi, particularly his film portrayal as stated on the main page above.
- Spiritual Migration: Having control over one's destiny and accepting your role on Earth, inspired partially by the band's musical journey over the years.
- Aathma: The philosophical idea that all human souls are part of one essence that remains forever connected.
- Metanoia: A call for deep change within oneself and the steps towards achieving it.
- The Lingua Ignota EP doesn't have an arching story, but is themed around music and sound being a universal tongue, as its name means "unknown language".
- Epic Rocking: Befitting of being a progressive band, their songs often reach or exceed 10 minutes in length. Core technically consists of three extremely long songs split into movements and one normal length outro, though the remastered version divides each song into multiple parts.
- Global Ignorance: As evidenced by many reviews of their first few albums, a surprisingly high number of people had never even heard of Andorra before looking into the band. Though unlike many instances of this, this can be easily justified given how diminutive the country is and its relative lack of mention or representation in media. They apparently are aware of this, as they frequently bring up their unorthodox origin in interviews and Miguel even released a vlog on Napalm Records' channel giving a tour of the country
in anticipation for Metanoia, where he admits without any annoyance that he understands why a lot of people haven't heard of it. - Metal Scream: Carlos, Marc, and Daniel all alternate between Type 3 and a hybrid of Type 1 and 2.
- Multinational Team: Perhaps unsurprisingly given that they hail from such a small country, only around 2/3 of their members have been native Andorrans. The rest are either from Spain (Carlos, Miguel, and Daniel) or Portugal (Filipe).
- Soprano and Gravel: The band alternates between harsh growls and clean vocals, with keyboardist Miguel handling the latter and Marc Pia (later Daniel Flys and earlier Carlos Quintanilla) the former.
- Special Guest: Aathma features Paul Masvidal and Øystein Landsverk, while Metanoia has an appearance from Steffen Kummerer.
- Symphonic Metal: Not a full-fledged example, but they do incorporate influences from the genre.
- Technical Death Metal: Their sound is a mix of prog and melodic tech.
