Touhou Project is notable for the large number of doujin circles that rearrange Touhou themes, may or may not add lyrics, and (usually) put them on albums. The "genre" seems to have started at Comiket 64 (in 2003), when PopKorn & Hara-Kara released Stardust Reverie. The fan music scene has grown massively since then, and there are now hundreds of groups dedicated to arranging music from the Touhou series.

The most commonly arranged themes are the ones from the mainline PC games (starting with Touhou Koumakyou ~ the Embodiment of Scarlet Devil), but you'll also see themes from the spin-offs, ZUN's Music Collection, PC-98 games, and rarely other franchises like Seihou. In addition, some of the circles create original compositions.

Touhou fan music is typically released at events like Comiket (a general doujin event) and Reitaisai (a dedicated Touhou event), and can later be purchased at shops like Toranoana and Melonbooks. As these shops don't ship overseas, it's not easy to get the albums if you live outside Japan — you have to use e.g. a forwarding service. The situation is getting better for overseas fans: Starting in October 2018, quite a bit of Touhou music has become available on iTunes, Google Play Music and (later) BOOTH.pm thanks to a label that deals with digital distribution of Touhou music. However, a lot of circles are still missing. Additionally, the second-hand shop Suruga-ya has started shipping to some Western countries.

A eurobeat circle that started making Touhou arrangements in 2019 and has been rapidly pumping out albums ever since. Notable for releasing some Unconnected Marketeers arrangements shortly after the original tracks were published.

*Bleep*-dammit!: The title of Heisei Saigo no Bokura no Ochinpo^note"ochinpo" means "penis" is written as "Heisei Saigo no Bokura no O*npo". It's pretty obvious what they meant, and the word is uncensored in the actual songs.

A pop/rock circle founded in 2010 and quietly went defunct around 2020. Debuted with a Garou: Mark of the Wolves arrangement album, but switched to Touhou and has stuck with it. One notable feature is that some of their songs feature parts from a lot of different themes.

Early-Installment Weirdness: The circle's first album was an instrumental Garou: Mark of the Wolves arrangement album. Since then all of their albums have been vocal Touhou albums (though older ones also contain instrumental versions of the songs, and the circle has released an original single).

Halozy

A now-defunct doujin circle founded in 2009 that made Electronic Music arrangements, varying from Trance, Eurobeat and Electro House. They announced on October 2017 that they'd be suspending all activities and no longer produce any more Touhou arrangements.

Know When to Fold 'Em: According to former circle representative sumijun, the main reasons why he decided to suspend the circle entirely were because he eventually grew dissatisfied of his work and can no longer keep up, later lamenting how his circle had gone too commercial for its own good. Combined with other personal factors, he officially announced on October 2017 about the circle's suspension. Outside of one album release in 2018 (aptly-named "Definitely Rare CD"), they had never produced any doujin music since then, and no official statements about their return has been made.

A circle that has been around since the end of 2007. Their Touhou arrangements are "made with sense of the respect to ZUN !!" as they like to put it, which means that many of its lyrics are written with an understanding of Touhou lore. The circle's music is largely written and arranged by members PHEVOTT and fanfan, who emphasize performing all of their music live in studio. Their musical style itself can vary greatly from song to song, but can be generally described as Rock music with an emphasis on instrumental performance and vocal duets, the circle will even go as far as to feature 3 vocalists on the same track on occasion. They also have original albums that tell stories written by lyricist Satoshi Kuroiwa, with each vocalist playing one or more roles in the scenario.

- "Moonlight's fanatic story" does the same to every theme from Touhou Eiyashou ~ Imperishable Night, but is "only" a little short of 7:30.

Pizuya's circle, active since 2007. Its musical style can be broadly described as a combination of three elements; Heavy Metal/Rock, Classical/Orchestral and Electronic. Combinations of these three styles make up the majority of the circle's music. Early albums by the circle were primarily instrumental metal, but releases since have branched out to feature vocal arrangements and electronic elements, instrumental piano-centric albums have become a staple for the circle are are released in tandem with their regular albums.

Downer Ending: "NOiSE -ノイズ-". After Maribel dies, Renko tries to create a Replacement Goldfish, but faces some difficulties that she can't get past no matter how hard she tries. In the end the replacement Maribel is shut down, and there is no indication that Renko is any closer to coming to terms with Maribel's death.

Re:cyc:le was an obscure circle that was active from 2006 to 2008. It later resurfaced as nekomimi style in 2016 and released one more album. It's mostly known for the song "Odenpa☆Love Girl", which appears in the "Cirno Baka Video".

Is It Something You Eat?: In "Odenpa☆Love Girl", Cirno asks if an abacus tastes yummy and then complains that she can't eat it.

A pop and rock circle that was formed when the core members of Yellow Zebra reunited. They continued making Touhou CDs in a similar style as Yellow Zebra (though their 2016-2018 albums leaned more towards rock), and kept the Touhou M-1 Grand Prix series going. They've also made two series of side albums (Yoshiha Style and the "whisper" albums) and a KanColle album. At the end of 2018, Yoshiha and Ucchii left the circle, but the two remaining members kept going.

Compilation Re-release: They've released a DVD containing the twenty-nine albums they had released between 2012 and 2018.
Epic Rocking: "Harukaze" is over seven minutes long.
Gratuitous English: Occasionally shows up in their work. For instance, the chorus of "Magic Magic!" has Yuki saying "magic magic" or (later) "mercy mercy" in English. There's also the song title "恋し楓～Autumun Maple～".

It temporarily disbanded in May 2012 due to the poor health of vocalist Sayori. In August 2013, several old members released one album, thousand mirage, as "Plutinum Crest powered by Silver Forest". Then the group reformed and became active again. In late 2017, it started focusing on the eurobeat album series Super Forest Beat. These albums consist mostly of original compositions, but feature a few Touhou arrangements.

Around 2016, he started collaborating with a circle named Lunark on original albums.

- LIMIT BREAK～限定解除～ Alternative 2010-2012 is a compilation of tracks released on "ALTERNATIVE" demos.
- Reisui Musou is a compilation of songs arranged by Gojou Kai that have been released in albums by other circles.

Studio "Syrup Comfiture" (Syrufit for short) is a doujin circle who makes Electronic Music arrangements. They've been around as far back as 2009, but took a three-year hiatus from making arrangements between 2013-2016. They also have close ties to the circle ALADDIN due to Syrufit's representative hiro.na being a member there.

A metal circle that describes its music as "technical melodic speed metal". They often mix elements of Progressive and Power Metal intro their Touhou arrangements. However, they've largely switched to original compositions since 2013, with most of their Touhou stuff being remixes or re-recordings of old songs.

Epic Rocking: Despite being an arrangement of only one theme ("Border of Life"), "その魂に安らぎを　～ Dignity of Spirit" is 09:27 long.
Longest Song Goes Last: The over nine minutes long "その魂に安らぎを　～ Dignity of Spirit" is the last track on Hypothetical Box ACT 2.

While it disbanded in 2011, its core members reunited as R-note in 2012.

Compilation Re-release: Exaggerated with Yellow Zebra Finale Box, a massive 11-disc compilation box containing almost all of their old songs (as well as six new ones). On top of that, it also contains a DVD featuring MP3 versions of almost every Yellow Zebra release ever — including most limited bonus CDs!
