Doves
(aka: Sub Sub)

Go To

Doves (Music)

Out of here
We're out of here
Out of heartache
Along with fear
There goes the fear again
There goes the fear
And cars speed fast
Out of here
And life goes past
Again so near
There goes the fear again
There goes the fear
Close your brown eyes
And lay down next to me
Close your eyes, lay down
Cause there goes the fear
Let it go
"There Goes the Fear"

Doves is an English indie rock band from Cheshire, consisting of Jimi Goodwin and twin brothers Jez & Andy Williams.

They started out as a House Music band called Sub Sub in 1991 and released two albums in 1994 and 1998 before a fire destroyed their studio. Doves was formed in 1998 and released their first album Lost Souls in 2000. They released three more albums until going on a hiatus in 2010. They reunited in 2018 and released their fifth album in 2020 (their first in nine years), with a sixth released in 2025.

Discography:

  • Full Fathom Five (1994 as Sub Sub)
  • Delta Tapes (1998 as Sub Sub)
  • Lost Souls (2000)
  • The Last Broadcast (2002)
  • Some Cities (2005)
  • Kingdom of Rust (2009)
  • The Universal Want (2020)
  • Constellations for the Lonely (2025)

You should follow me down, there's no colour and no tropes in a black and white town:

  • Alliterative Title: Full Fathom Five.
  • all lowercase letters: The album covers for Lost Souls, The Last Broadcast and The Universal Want have their band and the album names in all lowercase.
  • The Band Minus the Face: In 2020, they returned from hiatus with their fifth studio album The Universal Want. A tour was going to take place in spring 2022, but five months before, it was cancelled due to frontman Jimi Goodwin's mental health, stating he didn't want to perform just after a pandemic. This started another hiatus. Then, in 2024, Doves announced a sixth album that was released in 2025. Despite Goodwin singing on the album, due to continued mental health issues, he will not perform on a trio of intimate concerts. This was later expanded to the entire tour in early 2025, with the Williams brothers stepping up to the mic.
  • Band of Relatives: Jez and Andy Williams are twins.
  • Darker and Edgier: Constellations for the Lonely has a more darker and claustrophobic sound to it, being influenced by how the world is becoming worse.
  • Deliberately Monochrome: The cover of Some Cities is black and white.
  • "Double, Double" Title: Their original band name Sub Sub.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: While they're known for being an indie rock band, Doves started out as a House Music band called Sub Sub.
  • Epic Rocking: "Satellites", which is nearly 7 minutes long, same with "There Goes the Fear".
  • Genre Shift: When they first started out as Sub Sub, they were a House Music band, upon turning into Doves, they became an indie rock band instead.
  • Minimalistic Cover Art: The cover of Lost Souls shows a man standing in a dark room with some lights and the band & album name above him.
  • Non-Appearing Title: "Snowden".
  • Shout-Out: "Snowden" was named after the character from Catch-22 of the same name.
  • The Something Song: "Sea Song" and "Willow's Song".
  • Step Up to the Microphone: Jimi Goodwin is the lead singer, but the twins - Andy and Jez Williams - have sung lead on assorted tracks throughout the years, such as "Cold Dreaming".

Yeah we have been warned
It's a classic sign
Why should we care?
If this is our last summer
Oh then why should we care?
