Most Annoying Sound / Fighting Games

Go To

  • Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Despite her popularity, Doronjo from Yatterman makes an incredibly annoying wail when she is hit. And an annoying death scream, too.
  • ARMS: Lola Pop's "throwing whistle" from the last hit of her grab attack can get pretty annoying. God help you, if you choose to play as her or face off against her.
  • Bloody Roar. See that entry waaaaay up about the mistresses in HoMM5? Jenny does this moderately already, but then in 4 there's Nagi, who takes the absolute skank potential to 40!
  • Jojos Bizarre Adventure Eyes Of Heaven: The script of the game's story mode had the great idea of keeping most of Jotaro's lines to be his "Yare Yare Daze./Gimme a Break." in most cutscenes he was involved in.
    • While not much of a grating sound itself, you'll very quickly get tired of the 'Unlock Skill' sounds when you level up a character's ability tree whenever you update your entire party at once.
  • Arcana Heart: You know, Maori, you're a sweet young girl, but please... YOUR YOUNGER SISTERS' VOICES ARE HURTING MY EARS MORE THAN PHENEX'S SOUNDS!
  • Marvel vs. Capcom 3: One of Dante's Hyper Combos: "Keepin' it stylish!" *bambambambambambambambambam* "Yahoo, jackpot!". Becomes annoying due to Complacent Gaming Syndrome.
  • Parasoul from Skull Girls: NAPALM SHOT! Napalm Shot. Napalm Shot! NAPALM SHOT! Cry, Krieg! Napalm Shot. NAPALM SHOT! Napalm Pillar! NAPALM SHOT!
  • Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 3:
    • Play a tournament with more than three matches, and you'll want to strangle the announcer before long.
    • Blonde Launch makes the item selection screen truly nightmarish. God forbid you decide to go on a shopping spree after accumulating a lot of points.
"HEY, WHADDAYA WANT, HUH?! YOU SURE THIS IS RIGHT? HEY, WHADDAYAWANT, HUH?! YOU SURE THIS IS RIGHT? HEY, WHADDAYAWANT, HUH?! YOU SURE THIS IS RIGHT? HEY, WHADDAYAWANT, HUH?! YOU SURE THIS IS RIGHT?"
    • What about the Dragon Radar, while playing in the Dragon Universe mode? After 30 seconds you already want to explode it.
  • Vegeta (with his scouter on) in Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2 and 3 has one attack where he goes out of his way to scream, "THE SAIYANS ARE A TRUE WARRIOR RACE! DON'T UNDERESTIMATE US!!!" during one of his super attacks. In Tenkaichi 2, he would say this entire line before actually attacking! To make matters worse, the CPU absolutely loved this attack.
  • Marvel vs. Capcom 2:
  • SmackDown vs. Raw:
    • The announcers tend to use certain bits of patter multiple times in every fight:
"What the heck is a slobberknocker?"
    And from 2009 and 2010
"Here she comes again, like good medicine..." (Incidentally, those were Maria's only two appearances in the franchise to date)
    • SmackDown vs. Raw 2011: The soundtrack consisted mainly of a bunch of generic instrumental themes (notably, one of them was Bam Neely's old music). There were very few superstar songs playing on the menu, but among them are Luke Gallows' theme, Shad's solo theme, and the Vance Archer/Curt Hawkins theme.
  • Street Fighter:
    • The constant battle cries from Vega/Claw and Bruce Lee Clone Fei Long.
    • From Street Fighter IV, we have C. Viper's KO scream. Unlike the many silly and hammy screams, Viper gives a blood-curdling shriek at the top of her lungs. They gave her a much, much less damaging scream in Marvel vs. Capcom 3, thankfully.
    • Blanka's constant growling, especially in 4.
    • Sagat's "Tiger uppercut!" was worse.
      • Some may remember "My turn!" in place of "Tiger".
      • Hearing "Tiger" again and again is so annoying, the thing made it into a t-shirt.
      • Others might have misheard is as "Fiber!" "Fiber uppercut!" The Narm there usually nullifies the trope for those who hear this variant.
      • In Brazil, Tiger Uppercut was widely known as Tiger Robocop. It even lead to thus Fun T-Shirt.
      • In Street Fighter 4 it sounds something like "Fire Truck!"
    • The announcers from Street Fighter Alpha 3, SNK vs. Capcom and Street Fighter IV are a bit too enthusiastic for some fans taste, the one from Street Fighter III can also count.
    • In Street Fighter V, if the game's dub is set to Japanese. Cammy's Gratuitous English can qualify. SPIRAL ARROW!! CANNON SPIKE! ACCELERATION! FINISH! Not helping that Cammy is one of the best characters thanks to her Boring, but Practical low learning curve but she is also the most common characters you'll find.
    • Menat may earn her Ensemble Dark Horse status, but the moment she shouts these words upon activating her V-Trigger I, Light the way! buckle up cause it's That One Attack.
  • Fatal Fury:
    • Andy Bogard's "OOOOOOUUUUUAAAAAAAAAAAGH" damage grunt. It was present around Real Bout Special and KOF 97, but was nowhere near as prevelant until 99 up to 2002, where SNK decided to make said grunt his KO cry as well. Yes, as well. Its even more aggravating in 2002 where all the damn time, hitting Andy will make him go "OOOOOOOUUUUUAAAAAAGH" and as mentioned before, he goes "OOOOOOOUUUUUUAAAAAAAAAAAGH" when you KO him. For cripes sakes man, you're getting your ass handed to you, at least show more emotion than "OOOOOOOOUUUUUUUAAAAAAAGH"!
  • The King of Fighters:
    • PSYCHO BAAAAAALL! Especially from '98 on.
    • "KOKO DESU KA? KOKO DESU KA? KOKO DESU KA? KOKO DESU KA? KOKO DESU KA? KOKO DESU KA? KOKO DESU KA? KOKO DESU KA?" Gee, thanks Goenitz. Thanks for adding some annoying sounds to your That One Bossness.
    • It's better against players because they know better than to spam the move, but dammit, Whip, stop doing your air lift so much. "AAAAHHHHHHHHHH! AAAAHHHHHHHHHH!"
    • Angel changed voice actresses from her first appearance, with her newer actress providing a very high-pitched performance. It's so high that the audio sometimes clips when she says certain phrases.
  • Super Smash Bros.:
    • Almost all called attacks, resulting in infinite repetition of "piii-KA!" "FAL-cone PAOUNCH!" and "PK Fire!", especially if the player is spamming those moves.
    • No one who's played either the Japanese or European version of Brawl can leave it at this. Pit's Angel Ring (forward-B) attack is accompanied by the most annoying yipping imaginable. Its removal is easily the best change made for the American market.
      • Not that "HAIYAYAYAH!" is much better, particularly given that it accompanies one of the most spammable attacks in the game. Good thing it's only in Brawl, since 3DS/Wii U gave Pit a slight grunting sound making it much less annoying.
    • Lucas and Ness's battle cries get annoying, especially since they're rather unintelligible. This applies more to Ness, as his voice is more higher pitched which can get pretty obnoxious whenever he's calling out his attacks whereas Lucas at least has a more tolerable down-to-earth voice that isn't quite as grating to hear.
      • In Ultimate it gets worse, PK Fire becomes very spammable among players to get hit and became the bane of any online player who will fight Ness. It gets SOOOOOO annoying to have a small kid spouting this while you burn and the Ness player taunts you endlessly. This became the unholy reason why players will strangle Ness in the worse ways possible.
      • To a lesser extent; PK FREEZE! Not only did Ultimate buffs it to That One Attack where it sends you to the side unlike previously where you get launched upward making it a very kill potent move. But it becomes an attack Lucas will happily spam.
    • In Melee's Event Match 9: Hide 'n' Sheik, the Zelda/Sheik transformation noise qualifies.
    • Repeated endlessly: "YOU'RE TOO SLOW!" It's in Brawl only as 3DS/Wii U gives us "SONIC SPEED!"
    • Then there is Ike's "Moot!" accompanying some of his smashes. Not much more than funny until you go "Against anyone" online, where every second character is Ike, and every second move is a smash.
    • Kirby has many, most notably his taunt "HIIIIIIIII!" (toned down in Brawl and more so in 3DS/Wii U), because he would usually try to imitate a characters voice when copying their moves.
    • Yoshi has a very, very useful near-invincible-when-you-use-it Yoshi Bomb. To use it, you jump to directly above your opponent as high as you can and press down B. HUP/HARUMMMM/BOING HA!
    • Here's an experiment. Get four friends and all play as Pikachu. Then try not to scream if you hear the word "Pika!"
    • "WATCH THE POWER OF AURA." Sounds good, but do you have to announce it EVERYTIME?
    • Lucario's grunts and "ruahs" provided by Bill Rogers are annoying in general. Though in 3DS/Wii U onward, Sean Schemmel's portrayal is a bit more manageable
    • The gulp/restore noise when characters eat food. The worst part? Food usually comes in numbers, and in competitions you need to eat it quickly, resulting in an extremely annoying GULPGULPGULPGULPGULPGULP
    • It's even worse when Snake does it. Apparently, David Hayter thought it would be a good idea to have Snake go "Mmmarrf", "Gooood", or "Taastyy" every time he ate something. Nice going…
    • Wario makes similar noises when he eats items in general, but none can compare to his "OMMMMMMMM! MMMM-PHMMMM!" that he makes when he eats his own motorcycle. Be prepared to hear this noise many times when playing with a friend using Wario, especially if they're the kind of person who enjoys doing this intentionally just to piss you off.
    • Captain Falcon's "Show me your moves" taunt comes out faster when his back is turned, making it more easily spammed.
      • Also, while "FALCON... PAWWWWWNCH!" and "FALCON KICK!" can be funny to hear or quote along with, they can be quite annoying when spammed.
    • If you hang around the Melee tournament scene long enough, the Final Destination music becomes this very quickly.
    • There's nothing worse than throwing a Poké Ball…and hearing either "Goldeen, Goldeen" or "MUNCHLAX!"
    • Toon Link and Young Link have annoying, high-pitched voices in general, especially with their up special spin attacks.
    • A player can easily spam Peach's taunt. "Sah-WEET!" in Melee, and "La-lala-lala-la…" in Brawl.
    • "OOH-WUH, OOH-WUH, PAH-PAH-PAH! OOH-WUH, OOH-WUH, PAH-PAH-PAH! OOH-WUH, OOH-WUH, PAH-PAH-PAH! Good thing it's gone since 3DS/Wii U.
    • No four words are as likely to tick off a 3DS / Wii U player than Shulk's "I'M REALLY FEELING IT!" Yes, it had its deliberate Narm Charm the first time it was heard, which brought it to Memetic Mutation status fairly quickly. And then after the game actually came out, it became widely reviled in record time due to younger players constantly spamming that taunt. "Now it's Shulk time" is also generally considered annoying, but not nearly to the same extent.
    • Rosalina's constant gasps, moans, cries and exclamations that accompany her attacks can become this, especially due to how advantageous she is against most of the cast, how frequently she vocalizes, and how frequently her attacks are repeated. Diddy Kong was in a similar boat prior to the 1.0.6 patch (and may still be), as his infamous, overpowered and spammable "hoo-hah" combo was accompanied by the most annoying chimpanzee screeching imaginable.
    • Bayonetta's scream when she’s launched. AAAAAAHHH!!!
    • Scratch that, Bayonetta in general. Going up against a Smug Super protagonist that loves to mock people can frustrate players to no end, especially in 3DS / Wii U.
    • Greninja's Final Smash has the frog yelling "JAHJAHJAHJAHJAHJAHJAHJAHJAHJAHJAHJAHJAH… JAH!" for several seconds in a high-pitched, nasally voice.
    • If you come across a Mr. Game & Watch player in 3DS / Wii U, nine times out of ten that character is only chosen for his crouching sound effect. As if being teabagged wasn't bad enough, the constant "Qua-Ah-Qua-Ah-Qua-Ah-Qua-Ah" outright sounds like he's laughing at you while he pretends to rape your face.
    • We also have the Assist Trophy Phosphora from Kid Icarus: Uprising. If you're not the one who called her, then her iconic "Yes, you called?" is not something that you want to hear.
    • While the yipping of a puppy may be a case of Most Wonderful Sound in real life, when it's coming from the Nintendog assist in either Brawl or 4, it'll get on your last nerve as it means the screen is about to be covered up for a good ten seconds. Bonus points if you're playing against the computer.
    • Pichu, FULL STOP. If Diddy's monkey screeches weren't bad enough, then Pichu's high pitch squeaks and squeals can make any player rage at this annoying small rodent. God help you if you're sane enough to listen to PICHUPICHUPICHU!!!! all the freaking time. It's no wonder why players called it the new incarnation of 3DS/Wii U Diddy Kong.
    • Roy's Star KO scream in Ultimate is a mixture of this and Nightmare Fuel, as it sounds so blood-curdlingly realistic that it's practically jarring when juxtaposed against the more cartoonish aesthetics of the game. The fact that Roy is frequently used online only amplifies the annoyance.
    • Memetic as it is. But just like Shulk's taunt, though not to the egregious extent. Ganondorf's war cry in Ultimate whenever he does his Forward Smash can make people angry quickly due to its Noob killer potential. Not helping that anyone who'll fight him will spam the living daylights out of it.
    • Facing Jigglypuff or Luigi that manages to hit you with the Rest or Super Jump Punch multiple times will make you hate the "ping" sound especially if it kills you, the CPU in particular loves to troll with these moves on 3 to 8 player matches.
    • Speaking of the "ping" noise, there's also the bat, which is one of the most dreaded items when held by an opponent that manages to be a One-Hit-Point Wonder, which uses the same sound effect.
      • Many of the items can be annoying in general. There's a good reason most people turn items off when playing, as they not only are a distraction that get in the way of the fight, but also some of the sound effects and noises that come with said items as well. For example, listening to Waluigi's "hurrrrughh!" noise if you happen to be the unlucky victim being repeatedly stomped by him when he's released from the Assist Trophy capsule is really annoying.
  • Guilty Gear:
    • Millia's "jama!", Chipp's "arufa bureido!"
    • Many Guilty Gear fans have considered Jam Kuradoberi the most annoying-sounding character in fighting games in general. While it is common for fighting game characters to make screams, grunts, and yell out their attacks. The thing with Jam is once she hits you or vice versa, SHE DOESN'T KNOW WHEN TO SHUT UP. She talks so fast to the point where it sounds like nonsensical jibberish. Hell, you hear Jam more than the freaking background music, especially in XRD. She makes Bedman look like the "quiet kid" despite being excessively talkative in his dreams and mute in gameplay.
    • Up until the 3D games, the sound effects in Guilty Gear were infamously loud, to the point where the Dustloop wiki mentioned Sol's Tyrant Rave super would blow out your speakers. While it fits the games' explosive flair, it can be really disorientating at times.

  • BlazBlue:
    • The announcer speaks in very bad Engrish, so every time a match begins, you have to listen to "GORRILLA FATEnote  IS TURNING!"
    • To prevent insanity, it is recommended that you mute your TV before you attempt Challenge Mode in Continuum Shift. Having to hear the beginning of the same failed combo over and over again will get annoying fast.
    • Hitting an opponent while they're performing an attack will result in a Counter hit, which would be desirable except for the fact that the announcer yells "COUNTER!" in an overly enthusiastic tone.
    • Just about everything Platinum says.
    • Thanks to Ice Car spammers, we now have "DIE!, DISSIPATE!, DIE!, DISSIPATE!, DIE!, DISSIPATE!, DIE,DISSIPATE!"
  • Subverted in Tekken 2 as some of the howling death cries were actually kind of funny.
  • Naruto Narutimate Heroes series:
    • Honorable mention for its freaking 'YOOoo-! as the menu selection sound.
    • In the Nintendo GameCube games, there's Zabuza. "Pretty good—NOT GOOD ENOUGH!!!"
    • There is a glitch that can make the game say "Yo" anytime anything happens. ANYTHING.
  • Soul Edge/Soul Blade - Soul Edge's battle cries are so unhuman that it is the stuff of nightmares, and anyone struggling to beat him will quickly tire of it. He was considered nearly impossible to beat in the first Arcade version of the game, thankfully he was simplified for home ports, though still very hard.
  • Soul Calibur:
    • Tira's voice receives honorable mention, since not only is it ridiculously high and obnoxious, but she's psycho.
    • Luckily, it's a lot better in V. Have a listen.
    • Every...single...death... Particularly if you can still beat on the other player after the match is over.
  • Yoshimitsu in Soul Calibur II: "NAMU! SHEIK! HOI-YAAAH! SHEIK! HMMM! HOI-YAAAH! NAMU! HMMM! SHEIK! SHEIK! HOI-YAAAH! UUUUEEEAAHHHHHEH!" "Namu-namu-namunamunamunamuNAMUNAMU!!" "SEPPUKU! *stab* UUHHHIIEEEEE!"
  • From Mortal Kombat, Liu Kang's turkey gobbles.
    • There's also Raiden's unintelligible gibberish (which is often mistaken as him saying words) whenever he's doing his flying Torpedo attack.
    • Drahmin in Deadly Alliance is constantly followed by a cloud of flies that just. Won't. Stop. BUZZING.
  • If you watch a single match of competitive Vampire Savior in action, the amount of times the announcer says "TECH HIT!" accompanied by psychotic laughter will get on your nerves eventually.
  • From Akatsuki Blitzkampf, we have Marilyn Sue's ridiculously high-pitched, almost little girl-like's voice that really doesn't match her Ms. Fanservice looks. The players will get tired of hearing her very fast.
    • Ausf. Achse gives us Perfecti, who both looks and sounds like a teenage girl. Unfortunately, this means the players will also likely get sick of hearing her battle cries in few seconds.
  • Samurai Shodown 5: Whenever using Mina Makijina, most player opts to do a command move to make her pet Chample sleep, because if it's awake, it will flood the match with annoying voices and adds absolutely no value in the battle.
  • The Adventures of Bayou Billy: Billy's death groan followed by the "Life Lost" theme. Better get used to hearing that.
  • The video game adaptation of The Crow: City of Angels: All the enemies repeat the same line over and over depending on which model they are. All of them can get annoying. The one you will be hearing the most though is "Hey, clown-face".
  • Guilty Gear -Strive-: Japanese May's Totsugeki is infamous because of how abusable Mr. Dolphin is, and how frequently she launches him. Up to eleven with a mod that turns her Totsugeki into Pokémon Speak.
  • From the same developer as The Crow 2, we have Perfect Weapon: Capt. Blake Hunter constantly growls "No way!" every time he walks up to an edge, or a gap he should quite easily be able to walk over. Expect to hear him say this over and over again as you try to get your head around the game's horribly sluggish controls (even by 1996 standards) and poor level design. He'll sometimes even say it over the loading screen!
  • Punch-Out!!: In the arcade games, while it was impressive for its time, the announcer's voice can get pretty grating thanks to his shtick of calling out every single thing you do. "Right hook! Left Hook! Bodyblow bodyblow bodyblow! KNOCK EEM OUT!!! Uppercut! Stick-n-move! Stick-n-move!"
