The true main characters of Babylsnote

Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun (original Japanese title: 魔入りました!入間くん, Mairimashita! Iruma-kun), is a weekly shonen manga by Osamu Nishi. It runs in Weekly Shōnen Champion magazine published by Akita Shoten, and began its serialization on March 2, 2017. Kodansha USA announced at Anime Expo 22 that they had licensed the series for English publication with the first volume being expected in spring of 2023.

Iruma Suzuki is a sweet, normal boy whose irresponsible parents have led him time and again into life-threatening events. But this time, they've gone and sold his soul to a demon...who wants to adopt him as his grandson and send him off to a school full of demons! Now, Iruma must try to get through school without anyone finding out that he's a human.

An anime adaptation produced by Bandai Namco Pictures and directed by Makoto Moriwaki note  began airing on October 5, 2019, the first season of which ran for 23 episodes. A second season began airing on April 17, 2021 and ran for 21 episodes. A third season began in October 2022 with a total of 21 episodes.

    #-M
  • 13 Is Unlucky: In the human world, which makes it lucky in the Netherworld.
    • There are 13 members of the Misfit Class.
    • The meeting of the greatest demons of the Netherworld is called the 13 Dinner. Said demons are collectively known as the "Thirteen Crowns".
    • One year in the Netherworld consists of 13 months and the last month only has 13 days in it. Kiriwo's birthday falls on the thirteenth day of the thirteenth month.
    • Kiriwo Amy's prison number is 1313.
    • The time it takes for a summon contract to be cancelled is 13 hours, once the one-year contract term is over.
    • During the Second Year Misfit Heartbreaker Competition
      • When the Misfit class faces against teacher, at thirteen minutes of this 66 minute challenge more teachers join the fray.
      • Having survived the first 59 minutes of the competition, Allocer is near the endgame of his plan to protect his first-years, he is thirteen seconds from initiating the final part and Atori ambushes the whole team with the intention to kill some of them. While they are quickly saved by Ipos and Orias, once Atori flees Orias pops their balloons anyway.
  • Absurdly Powerful Student Council: Subverted. They do have a lot of influence among the faculty, which is how Iruma was able to get permission slips from several teachers, however they are also still seen as another student group and are subjected to the same rules as them.
  • Abusive Parents:
    • Iruma's parents were both horrible and selfish people who literally had him act as their slave from the moment he could walk, and made him work various dangerous jobs despite him being underage for most of it. They eventually took this to an extreme level by remorselessly selling his soul to Sullivan without his knowledge. Granted, this did actually became a real improvement to Iruma's life, but the abuse and neglect they placed upon him had a major impact on him both emotionally and mentally.
    • When it was discovered that Kiriwo Amy barely had any magic in him, his entire family immediately shunned him for this as they viewed this as a disgrace to their family name. When the boy spotted his mother among them, he ran to her for comfort. However, she coldly shoved him away from her while ordering her relatives to take him to a school that was known as the Garden of Delinquents.
  • Actor Allusion:
  • Actually Pretty Funny: When Sabnock and Iruma come in dead last during their First Year race because they both ended up going through Cutthroat Valley, which was also out of bounds for this year, he has them sit to the side and reflect on their actions. Clara then starts pelting them with tiny rocks and mocks them and Kalego just chuckles softly at her actions.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: During episode 3, when Iruma is playing with Clara and runs to a part of the school, he finds the sealed door to the Royal One. He isn't told what it is and doesn't ask anyone, but it introduces the doors long before the room becomes a plot point in the seriesnote
  • Adaptation Deviation:
    • Starting from Episode 8, the anime changes up the ordering of some of the chapters it adapts. Episode 8 in particular moves the events of Chapter 17 to the middle of Chapter 13. Because this episode takes place before the Cannonball Execution Game, Iruma took Classroom Lectures as an Elective as to not stand out rather than because his body was sore.
    • Purson Soi is named and introduced three entire seasons early, since it would have been too conspicuous to show him in the room but leave him out of formal roll calling and group shots.
  • Adaptation Expansion: Has its own page here due to how much extra content is added in each episode.
  • Adults Are Useless:
    • The various adult humans from Iruma's previous life were even worse than useless, as not only did they do nothing to help with or stop his Abusive Parents, they apparently either weren't aware in the first place or corrupt enough to be manipulated or paid to turn a blind eye.
    • Conversely, in a rather ironic case, most every example of adult demons who aren't members of villainous groups are extremely competent and helpful, not only doing everything they can to make sure Iruma and the rest of the demonic children are protected and well-educated, but also are for the most part pretty good at it, with only a few slip-ups here and there, and even then it's simply a case of the villains being good at trickery and sneakiness rather than any negligence or corruption on the heroic demons' part.
    • Played with during the attack on Walter Park. As demons have a natural Lack of Empathy towards anyone who isn't already important to them, no adult demon moved to help a random child crying out for help for him and his trapped friends. Each adult is concerned with how potentially dangerous the situation is and wants to get to safety for their own sake. Even Balam refuses to move to help and encourages Iruma to move on. It's only when Iruma runs to rescue the child from some falling debris does Balam get into the action.
  • Alien Sky: It was never focused on before, but in chapter 140, when Iruma is just standing around looking up at the sky during the night pondering his life in the Netherworld, it's shown in one panel that the Netherworld has two moons, one big and one small.
  • Aliens Steal Cable: Not quite cable, but Ameri learns about the existence of humans by reading human manga.
  • All for Nothing: The "13 Hour Arc" has Kalego do everything he can to finally break the Familiar Pack with Iruma and suceeding, only for Iruma to summon him again as his Familiar.
  • All Girls Want Bad Boys: When Iruma gets his personality flipped from nice to bad, the girls at the school suddenly gain crushes on him.
  • Alliterative Name: While not universal, a decently large number of characters in the story have both their given name and surname start with either the same letter or the same sound. Examples include (both alphatically and grouped by surname):
    • Alice and Amaryllis Asmodeus.
    • Ameri Azazel.
    • Bachiko Barbatos.
    • Blushenko Buer
    • Kamui Caim.
    • Kerori Crocell.
    • Dali Dantalion.
    • Goemon Garp.
    • Grave Sunny Gusion.
    • Quichelight Kimaris.
    • March and Mar Marbas.
    • Momonoki Morax.
    • Oswell Orias
    • Lomiere/Romiere and Rosevelt Ronove.
    • Sabro, Silvia and Sabzan Sabnock. (Taken further with Sabro and Sabzan Sabnock.)
    • Shakky Shax (Shakusu).
    • Suzy Stolas.
  • Altar Diplomacy: Many girls have considered asking out Iruma because he is Sullivan's grandson.
  • Always Chaotic Evil: The story plays around with this idea when it comes to demons. On one hand, it's a biological aspect of demonkind to be destructively chaotic and violently evil, to the point that they go into a a super-empowered chaotic rampage called a "wicked phase" if they don't have an outlet for their evil impulses. On the other hand, most demons have been raised in a society that pushes them into being more Lawful Neutralinvoked, and as a result they greatly prefer peace and happiness over violence and hate. So the story presents an example of Nurture over Nature when it comes a normally Always Chaotic Evil race.
  • Arbitrary Skepticism:
    • Only high ranking demons are even aware of the human realm. Due to this, most of the students think that humans are just a myth. Which is a bit odd since their School Song is pretty much just about how they will devour humans.
    • No one believes Iruma when he states his ring became sentient.
  • Ambition Is Evil: In a story filled with demons that possess a literal compulsion for evil, this is heavily played with. It is part of demon society for individuals to hold ambitions and follow their desires, but several points in the story, most notably Ameri Azazel's personal philosophy, show that how that ambition is applied determines the evilness of a characters. Aimless ambition used purely to express one's desires as The Unfettered leads to a life of nothing but violence and destruction, only caring about pleasing oneself while trampling on others to attain their goals. An ambition tempered with restraint and focus as The Fettered allows one to find tamer ways of expressing their desire, while their set limitiations allow them to perceive others as equals to respect and care for, potentially even applying that ambition to pursuing happiness through love and companionship.
  • Amusement Park: There's Walter Park, owned by the Ronove family, which has almost everything one could expect from such a place, from attractions, to snacks, to gift shops. It does have shades of Amusement Park of Doom, however, as the source of magical power to operate the whole park is provided by prisoners held in a prison located underneath, along with the place originally being built as somewhere for demons to vent their "wicked phases", with various shady and illegal businesses continuing to operate out of back alleys there.
  • Androcles' Lion: During Iruma's First Year Flying Race, by happenstance he ends up in the nest of a bus-sized demonic bird. The creature thrashes at him because it has been injured on its leg. After injuring himself intentionally to show empathy for the creature a single drop of Iruma's blood heals the 2-ft long gash in an instant. The bird is grateful and takes Iruma to its parent, the boss of Cutthroat Valley. This is fortunate as Sabnock is about to be killed by the parent and only stops because of the intervention of Iruma and its child. Understanding the kindness Iruma did to its child, the boss carries both Sabnock and Iruma to the race's end as thanks.
  • Arc Words: "Ambition" is mentioned frequently by numerous characters, heroes and villains alike, whenever topics of their future goals or dreams come up.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: Ameri asks Iruma what his goals in life are. Iruma, having spent his whole life kowtowing to others, can't muster a response since he hasn't given any thought as to what he wants. Recognizing his not being able to find an answer, Ameri helps point him to advancing his rank from 1 to 2.
  • Arranged Marriage: Powerful demon clans will use marriages to obtain strong, talented demons into their ranks, especially if their skill sets are similar. The Babartos clan president approaches Bachiko to investigate Irumi, ignorant to the fact Irumi is actually Iruma, for "her" showcasing of archery skills at the Evil-Idol games and set "her" up to marry Robin from the branch family.
  • As Long as It Sounds Foreign: Beyond basing the ranking system on the first ten letters of the alphabet, none of the Hebrew script is actually real Hebrew. It's actually just the commonly used Roman Alphabet, but each letter is redesigned to look like it's Hebrew script.
  • Asmodeus: Asmodeus is the name of a wealthy demon family, Alice being a member of it.
  • Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: While this is exhibited the most in the Valac family, it's eventually revealed that all demons at bare minimum exhibit a downplayed case of this. If something doesn't interest them enough to keep focused on it, it will be borderline impossible for them to spend more than a day or two trying before dropping it and doing something else. This combined with the additional inherent Lack of Empathy also makes trying to perform as a group basically a lost cause. Thus it makes eleven of the thirteen Misfits doing a coordinated dance routine all the more impressive.
  • Author Appeal: All of the most attractive girls in this series are also noticeably tall.
  • Badass Boast: Elizabetta gives one on behalf of the Misfit Class to Amduscias, one of the judges of the Music Festical.
"Amduscias-sama, we appreciate your concern, but there is no need for you to worry. We're going to pierce you with the finest sound."
  • Bait-and-Switch:
    • Following being sold by his parents to Sullivan, it looked like something terrible would happen to Iruma. Cut to the next scene, and he's sitting on a chair surrounded by gifts being pampered with a look of utter confusion on his face.
    • Ameri knows that Humans exist because she states she has access to ancient Human Texts. In the Anime this is shown to be a wall of books surrounded by light, suggesting that these are some powerful artifacts. Once she opens it up its revealed the books are actually a romance manga.
    • In a Sukima, when a magical barrier appears and separates Iruma from Azz and Clara, Azz is upset at being separated from Iruma and sees Clara is in a similar distressed mood. He believes they are united in their grief at this barrier keeping them from Iruma. Then it turns out she is mourning how her food fell on Iruma's side of the barrier and she cannot reach it.
    • Amy wondered what caused a strange feeling in his chest every time he was looked down upon and shunned, and didn't figure it out until he saw his childhood friend lose her most precious item. He discovered he was actually feeling ecstasy and was getting off on the misery.
    • Sabnock sees there is a Demon King's club and rushes to join, thinking this would be a club filled with people looking to become Demon King. What he finds is a group of nerds who use the club to study the writings of the Demon King. However, Sabnock quickly becomes engrossed into the writings and joins anyway.
  • Better Off with the Bad Guys: The story starts with fourteen-year-old Iruma being sold to the devil by his own deadbeat parents and brought to Hell. Fortunately, all said devil wants is a grandson to show off to his friends and Iruma starts to live a life of luxury. He stops trying to go back to the human world when he remembers how his parents stole anything he produced and made him live in the wilderness.
  • The Big Race: One of the earliest rank evaluation tests new students at Babyls endure is a race amongst their assigned classmates. The students typically have two routes: the dangerous Cutthroat Valley and less dangerous Warbling Valley.
  • Black Swords Are Better: The strongest weapons the Sabnock family can forge are black as they put their heart and soul into its creation. These weapons cause immense pain in any who are wounded and then transfer that pain into pleasure for the demon who forged it.
  • Blatant Lies:
    • Despite his clothes showing he had to ruff up some people, Azz states he only "peacefully talked" to get others to leave Clara alone. Iruma doesn't buy it.
    • Ameri didn't take the Manga because she enjoys it, she took it because she needed to study it.
    • Ameri isn't making Iruma read her manga because she wants him to, she is having him read it to confirm he is a human. Also she won't be able to confirm it till he reads her the entire series. She is just being thorough.
  • Both Sides Have a Point: The conflict at the heart of the Royal One Arc arises from Iruma and the Misfits Class wanting to trade classrooms. While Iruma has to accept that most of the class really is deserving of being separated due to continuous and eggregious misbehavior (for example, Jazz stole from students and teachers), their current room is indeed terrible and they should be provided with better accomodations.
  • Bowdlerization:
    • The manga periodically depicts characters smoking cigars and kiserus, whether to represent delinquency or maturity. The manga can get away with this since manga rules are lax about depicting such stuff in children-marketed demographics, but anime rules are a lot stricter about that stuff only being done by blatantly adult characters, so stuff like delinquents smoking in halls or Ali-san smoking while using the appearance of a sultry woman in a bar are changed to delinquents kicking cans at other students and Ali-san holding A Glass of Chianti to maintain the same status without the smoking.
    • The anime changed Ali-san (in the ring) strangling Kiriwo to just being attracted to his magical focus necklace, making his warning pretty much non-existent.
    • When Jazz is thinking about his Big Brother Bully Rock, there's a short flashback scene to Jazz coming home to find his brother appropriating his room to entertain a couple of lady friends while the narration from Jazz states that he's a womanizer and a drunkard. In the manga, the two girls appear to be young adults like Rock, and they and Rock are all passed out in only their undergarments on Jazz's sofa, a number of beer cans scattered around. In the anime, the three are awake, fully clothed, and there's no alcohol in sight, but both girls look noticably closer to Jazz (a 14 or 15 year-old) in age than young adults, bringing forth a different kind of squick.
  • Brick Joke:
    • The reason why Sullivan wanted a grandkid is because his friends keep bragging about theirs and it made him jealous. Later on during their meeting, his friends start it off by gushing about their grandchildren.
    • In Chapter 181, Lied assembles a class meeting about how to get closer to Elizabetta causing Azz to suggest to Iruma that they leave after just getting there. At the end of the chapter when Lied calls another class meeting on what his first message to her should be, Azz once again suggests to Iruma they leave.
    • After the Harvest Festival, Iruma and Lied hang out at Lied's apartment to play videogames. It comes to light that they both consider the other to be like a little brother to them, which makes them argue over who really is the little brother. Many chapters later at Iruma's birthday, Lied reveals that his birthday is in September, a month before Iruma's, which definitely makes him the older brother.
    • In an attempt to get Soi Purson to open up to him and eventually the rest of the class, Iruma reads off a list of embarrassing secrets the class has learned about Purson in the same way he revealed the embarrassing secrets of the class's boys. One of these secrets is that he is unable to skip. At the end of the arc, when Purson's mom is giving him a pep talk, she mentions the various reasons she loves his dad (who is currently trying to get Purson to drop out of the school festival he's involved in) and one of those reasons is his dad is unable to skip.
  • Call a Rabbit a "Smeerp": Due to the Demon World being completely isolated from the human world for countless generations, and the fact demons overall favor a heavy "evil" aesthetic, there are many mundane objects and activities that wind up getting called something scary and/or overly-dramatic, such as referring to the game of dodgeball as "Cannon Ball Execution". That said, the demons still have monstrous strength and powers which can make even dodgeball dangerous to a normal human.
  • Call-Back:
    • When Iruma is looking for the right physical material to make into his own core for his bow, he tries many items, but finds the right one are the feathers of the Leader of Cutthroat Valley, the giant bird demon whose child Iruma helps back during his flying exam.
    • Schare Eligos' obsession with Ameri is referenced again in the Harvest Festival arc when he watches Bachiko use the Quartz Quartz spell to create a bow out of a physical core. He takes a cute doll and makes a bow with the riser and limbs in the shape of Ameri. He declares this will be his family heirloom. Likewise, Ameri is not amused when she finds this and confiscates it.
    • At the beginning of the Music Festival arc, Soi Purson is properly introduced to the reader (and to the rest of the Misfit class) with Kalego pointing him out from the middle of the group. At the end of the arc, after being accepted as one of their own by the class (and after being the showstopper that wins the festival), the final page has a reversal of that shot, with Kalego pointing out that the rest of the class is standing right next to him, with all of them taking off their enchanted glasses at the same time. They are even in the exact same formation.
    • When Iruma first meets the others in the Misfit Class, he avoids the weapons launched at him with ease. He later is reminded of that moment when he and Kalego are avoiding and deflecting attempts by the Misfits to put a summoning sticker on Iruma to renew his contract with Kalego.
    • During the Heartbreaker Competition, after Iruma summons Kalego to neutralize him, Kalego reminds Iruma of the dangers summoning a powerful and not controlled familiar by noting how only Iruma will be spared his wrath. The others are free game for his retaliation.
  • Cast of Snowflakes: Almost everybody in the story has a distinctive design, from the main characters to incidental background demons. Many of them are so distinct that they're still recognizable when acting as part of Faceless Masses.
  • Cat/Dog Dichotomy: Kalego has a general dog motif (made explicit in the second gaiden chapter about when he was a teenager) and Opera is vaguely cat-like with their tail and ear like horns. Naturally they have gotten along horribly since the first time they met. At present day, Opera seems to be the only person that genuinely scares Kalego.
  • Censored for Comedy: In the anime, when Ameri tells Iruma about the time where as a child she baked cookies for her father, the cookies are pixelated to show how bad they were.
  • The Chains of Commanding: When one current member of the Thirteen Crowns is talking with some demons looking to join their ranks, the demon freely admits being a Crown is a "huuge[sic] pain in the ass." One is always under the spotlight, one's actions carry a lot of weight and repercussions, one must greet the people of the Netherworld in kind, plenty of meetings and misions, if one task is coming hundreds more will follow, and it will make one many enemies. The demon then notes despite these chains, why do some still seek this position? Because there comes with it a lot of power and other freedoms as Elite Agents Above the Law to a certain degree.
  • Chekhov's Gag:
    • One all the way back to the first chapter: before Sullivan sends Iruma off to his first day at Babyls, he dumps a bucket of perfume on him to mask his scent as a human. Opera later uses the scent of this perfume to track him down when he gets lost.
    • When Iruma is first visiting the Magical Apparatus Battler, Kirio shows him some paper dolls which can move when infused with magic, but even moving it slightly causes Kirio to vomit up blood. During the sleepover during their preparation for the Battler Party, Clara is seen playing with them. During Kirio's attack on the school, Clara uses her duplication techniques to create hundreds of them and Asmodeus empowers them, letting them find the pathway for Iruma to bypass the barriers and find Kirio's secret room once more.
    • In Chapter 6, Iruma learns how his human blood can be used as a healing agent and enhancer to materials in the Demon World. During the Harvest Festival, he uses his blood to enhance a vine plant that will help him escape from a deep chasm. It turns the vine into a towering plant that is taller than the previously largest trees by several magnitudes.
    • Iruma's ability to read Hatsukoi Memory, and having worked on it when back on Earth, at first is just a reason for the start of his friendship with Ameri, but during the Harvest Festival his encyclopedic knowledge of the series allows him to retell it to Thoth the Genie, who guards the Seed of Beginning and requires being told something that moves his heart and is funny. Thoth is so moved, he gives the Seed to Iruma.
    • Ameri keeps on running into Iruma being Dragged into Drag, so she's well aware of Iruma's secret identity right when Team Kuromu needs a replacement idol who's already up to speed with his secret identity and they can trust with the other two.
    • There's a recurring, evolving gag upon gag with Iruma being Dragged into Drag:
      • After Iruma first dresses as Irumi, Kerori needs some photos of him later to prove he is a legit Evidol and not a plantnote .
      • To prove their worth as pupils, Iruma and Leid are forced by Bachiko to dress in girl's clothes and do a dance.
      • That leads in to the Harvest Festival when in order to get help from Kerori to find information on the legendary leaf, she has them dress up and dance for her. They do the dance Bachiko made them learn. But Kerori warns Iruma if he asks something more of her, she will call in the favor.
      • After the Music Festival, Kerori calls it in and needs both Iruma and Leid to dress up in order to be on her team for the Evidol Games.
  • Chekhov's Gun:
    • During Iruma's first Devi-botany class with Professor Stolas, she teaches the students the basic blooming spell "Quan Quan." Several months later, Leid and Iruma realize that is the key spell needed to help make the Legend Leaf bloom.
    • During several reaction shots of students reading the school newspaper with Iruma's name and recent event taking center stage, there is always a smaller article about Kuromu below it. During these moments Kerori is seen in the background frustrated and clenching her hands with the thumbs enclapsed by her fingers. This pays off twice:
      • First it shows her dislike initially for Iruma as she is Kuromu and so dislikes him for taking away publicity from her. Thus why when Iruma meets Kuromu she has a frosty confrontational tone.
      • Second, Iruma recognizes her as the idol Kuromu, in part, because of her unique way to clench her hands.
    • On day 1 of the Harvest Festival, Misfit student Schneider Allocer works with Jazz to get points by disguising himself as a faculty member setting up a fake submission point for people to drop their goods off at. On the fourth and final day after Koko Orobas has stolen the special plant pot needed to grow the legendary leaf from Lied, Allocer sets up another fake submission station and Koko falls for it, giving Allocer back the item, and allowing him to give the pot to Iruma. Happens again when it turns out that Orobas collected so many high-value items that not even the Legendary Leaf's massive point value is enough to bring Iruma and Lied to victory. It's pointed out that the pot is still a separate item from the Leaf even if the Leaf was planted in it, and thus has its own value to bring them over the top.
    • During the climax of the Heartbreaker Competition when Teams Allocer and Jazz are rescued by teachers Ipos and Oswell from Atori, Allocer had been protecting four hearts (two for his team and two on Jazz's). However, Oswell only pops three and tells three of them and Allocer to go to the dropout tent. The teachers fail to notice there is one heart and participant missing. Allocer hid her in his pocket keeping her and her balloon safe, allowing Team Jazz to win the competition with Team Asmodeus.
    • When the Thirteen Crowns are first shown on screen, only twelve are seen or mentioned. This discrepency in numbers is later expanded as there is one missing seat reserved for Delkira and his request they protect his empty throne.
  • Chromatic Arrangement: The three beasts that attack Walter Park are a red dragon, a yellow panther-rat and a blue bull creature.
  • Clark Kenting: The series provides an amusingly justified example of a Paper-Thin Disguise actually working, in the form of detection-warding glasses. Any time somebody wants to be unnoticed as their true self, they put on these kinds of glasses and nothing else, because they're enchanted with a Perception Filter that makes the wearer seem like an innocuous and forgettable nobody. There's a catch, though, in that the enchantment won't work on somebody who already knows it's them wearing the glasses.
  • Code Name: While most Deviculums are just high society affairs, ones hosted by the Thirteen Crowns for the purpose of naming their replacements, and further in this special situation revealing the Trickster plan is such a high security affair, it is protocol to address everyone as either "Milady" or "Milord" to help hide the identities of those at this masquerade ball.
  • Comically Missing the Point:
    • Due to their cultural differences, Iruma's demonic friends and schoolmates often interpret his actions and words as shows of strength and him flexing his great demonic powers, which isn't helped by his Achievements in Ignorance. Even when he's not doing anything in particular, such as walking to school instead of flying as he has no innate magical powers, that could still be misconstrued as him willfully limiting himself to challenge his own strength.
    • When Leije Levi tries to dominate and intimidate Iruma and Razberry Bellial-Berry by pointing his finger at them as he declares he will become the Demon King over them, the latter two think he is making a unique handshake and both put their fingers against his in a sign of meeting his challenge for this competition.
  • Cordon Bleugh Chef. Iruma and Ameri's first attempt at cooking together ends up with them creating an absolute monstrosity that barely looks like a cake, with creatures parts sticking out of it.
  • Crash-Into Hello: How Iruma and Ameri first meet, mirroring a scene from her shoujo manga. Because she can't actually read them she suspected it's a human love spell and believes Iruma is trying to make her fall in love with him.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Parodied when Iruma was getting ready for Walter Park. He and Sullivan prepared a backpack for everything Iruma might need, which is shown to be a backpack filled so much its twice the height and about four times as wide as Iruma. Opera objects to Iruma taking it.
  • Creepy Red Herring: During the Student Council Training Arc Romiere is presented as the primary suspect in Ameri's change in personality as a means of weakening her so he could finally triumph over her. He is not it, and resents the claim. Such underhanded tactics are beneath him because they aren't flashy or attention grabbing. The true culprit is a background character who is seen in the crowds named Schnare. He is obsessed with Ameri and president of her fan club. His reason for doing this? To see other sides of Ameri to fill his ambition.
  • The Creon: When the conversation among the Three Greats lands on appointing the next demon king, they waffle about selecting one of the three before deciding that they would rather not sacrifice their leisurely lives than become the next ruler. When Levi and Belial offer Sullivan the position, he refuses, believing he is more suited as an educator than a leader.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Sullivan's two peers are likely on the same level of power and threat as him. They are also loving doting grandparents who spend much of their important meeting sharing stories of their grandkids.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle:
    • Opera does not hold back when it comes to games at Iruma's First Year Battler Party, destroying targets and collecting prizes all for Iruma.
    • In the Walter Park arc, Kalego, Balam, and Opera face down a fusion of the three giant monsters. The former two demons are rank 8, and while Opera's rank is unknown they still are capable of terrifying Kalego. The battle is over in swift course when the three take the beast on. Their students and Iruma wonder if just one would have yielded the same easy result.
  • Cute Monster Girl: While they may be demons, all the female students and teachers definitely count as this, and the ED even focuses on them. A number of the male demon characters could also potentially qualify as Cute Monster Boys.
  • Custom Uniform: Many students who have unusual body proportions wear these, though some atypical ones just wears them to suit their tastes. Taken to an extreme with Asmodeus whose uniform doesn't even follow the color scheme of the rest. Neither does his track suit that he wears while practicing for the music festival, which leads to the others pressuring him to change to the color that they are all wearing to fit in and sync up better.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Despite being a demon realm, Iruma finds the demons and have good and bad among their ranks.
  • Deal with the Devil: The whole plot gets kicked off when Iruma's irresponsible parents sell him off to Sullivan for money.
  • Demoted to Extra: This is invoked in-universe by Kerori in the Music Festival arc. While Iruma is a great dancer, she puts him on the music team with Soi because if Iruma dances, he will draw attention to himself and away from others. They need the whole class to succeed to raise up everyone's ranks to Rank 4. If he takes attention from them, then they will likely fail in raising everyone's rank. Moreover, Iruma is already Rank 4, so everybody else in the class has more need to draw attention to themselves than he does.
  • Didn't Think This Through:
    • Iruma had this reaction when he realized he just healed the monster that was going to eat him. Luckily this was an Androcles' Lion situation.
    • Iruma initially wants to return to the human world. When Opera tells him that he actually can return if he wishes, he starts having doubts about it, considering that he'd be giving up a guardian who actually provides for his needs, a life of luxury, and all of his new friends in exchange for his old crappy life should he return to the human world.
    • After training days on end to catch the ball for the Dodgeball game, Iruma realized during the game after he caught it he never trained on throwing it back. Luckily, he manages to do so by incorperating his natural defensive skills. He catches and spins with the ball to return it back at Azz with the same level of force Azz just unleashed at him. The counterstrike hits Azz.
    • Ronove is pissed that the monster (who has just destroyed the theme park and is charging a beam to obliterate the survivors) is not focused on him and demands it to look at him. He then remembers that this monster is about to obliterate a stadium and is now looking in his direction.
  • Diegetic Soundtrack Usage: Season 2 Episode 11 of the anime features a "screeching session" (a.k.a. a karaoke session) where several of the Misfit Class students sing a slightly altered and more repetitive version of the Season 1 opening theme.
  • "Dinner, Bath, or Sex" Offer: In Season 2 Episode 16, during one of Ameri's Iruma-focused Imagine Spots, this time about the idea of them living together, and thus practically married in her eyes, she thinks up a more G-rated example that stops at the bath part, and since Iruma is a Big Eater, her imagined version of him immediately chooses dinner.
  • Divided We Fall: The Three Greats know that the Demon World is on a precipice. A poorly chosen Demon King could lead to the unraveling of the stability they are maintaining. They recognize that even selecting one of the powerful Thirteen Crowns to lead will only create resentment in some of the others, forcing in-fighting and more instability. To avoid this, they choose neither any member of the Thirteen nor themselves. Instead, they seek a younger demon of great potential and will nominate him or her, and allow the Thirteen to help raise the child up and mold them into a great new King. They will even permit each of the Thirteen to nominate candidates for this prestigious honor.
  • Don't Celebrate Just Yet: During the Heartbreaker Competition, the Misfit squads successfully stop Sullivan from entering the competition but forget that the competition is still on going and the teachers attack the students for their hearts, taking down three hearts in quick succession and fully eliminating one team entirely.
  • Double Take: It takes several seconds for Bachiko to process the revelation that Iruma is a human.
  • Dramatic Irony: A double dose for Jazz and his familiar. Jazz's familiar is a Split Wolf, a fierce wolf-type creature of incredible power with two snakes as tails. Because of Jazz's nature affecting his familiar, the familiar is a short, non-combatant fluff ball. However, during a teachers' meeting there are rumors of Jazz using his "ferocious familiar" to extort things from other students, when the familiar is not threatening at all. Jazz is hesitant to even summon it out of some embarrassment by it not looking like the adult version. That said, the while Spoo is a friendly-looking familiar, he does have Jazz's thieving skills as he takes all of the candy on Iruma when Iruma held him without noticing.
  • The Dreaded: Bachiko Barbatos describes the Barbatos clan archers as the Dreaded to many other demons, with their unique ability to hit any target, even one fleeing away (most demons have impulsive natures and aren't capable of persisting through the delayed gratification and patient fighting style that comes from putting in the effort to learn archery, so the Barbados clan with their bloodline magic are some of the only snipers in the demon world.) She further adds how if this done when the victim is unsuspecting and the archer times it right, then a single shot from an archer can turn the whole battle. This is why when others speak of the Barbatos clan the word that comes up most frequently is "despair."
  • Dream Deception: A rather poor attempt by Purson when Iruma catches him playing the trumpet on Royal One's roof in order to avoid being recruited into the class's Music Festival Performance. It's such a blatant lie that he regrets trying to enact the trope instantly.
  • Early-Bird Cameo:
    • In the anime, Clara's family and Kerori grandmother can be seeing in a crowd shot in Episode 1.
    • During Belial and Levy's first appearances, they are showing off pictures of their grandsons. The photos aren't quite focused on, but you can make out certain details about their appearances. It's not until almost 200 chapters later that the grandsons are properly introduced.
    • When Kerori was explaining about the Demon Dance during the Music Festival arc, she notes that only 2 of the 6 demons who who put the team together had the mental stability to stay in sync until the end. Her and one other whom we see dancing behind her. During the next arc, it becomes obvious that that demon was Gyari.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness:
    • Initially, it's treated as though humans are common knowledge within the Demon World, even if they don't really exist within it. Babyls' school song is all about eating humans even. But later, on it's revealed that humans are considered fictional creatures by most and that it's a deeply held secret that there is any other world besides the Demon one within demon society.
    • During the flying race at the beginning of the story, Professor Kalego expresses disinterest at the idea that Sabnok could end up getting killed. Later in the story, it's established that the teachers of Babylis have a code of honor involving protecting the students from mortal danger at all costs. Even though Kalego is a sadist teacher, he's also a strict rule enforcer, so him dismissing a student possibly dying in an early chapter feels unusual after the story progresses.
  • Edutainment: In-Universe. During the arc where the Misfits Class prepares for end-of-term exams, Iruma is notably behind everyone due to not growing up on the Netherworld and has a hard time studying normally. Edutainment media is then used to help him catch up, like playing a video game based on historical events, picture books made by a teacher to introduce even a kid to certain concepts, and Clara makes a song as a mnemonic device.
  • Elective Monarchy: The Thirteen Crowns and the Three Greats are the current leaders of the Demon World, but none of them are the King. The next Demon King is to be selected by these two groups. It is believed one of their members in either group is likely to become the next Demon King. However, by chapter 200, the Greats have come to the conclusion neither any member of the Thirteen nor each other should be the next Demon King. Selecting any of them would create in-fighting and destabilize the Demon World further. Instead, they have chosen to nominate one of their own grandsons for title of Demon King and have asked the Thirteen Crowns to help evaluate and mold these candidates into a proper King all could follow. They will even allow the Thirteen to nominate candidates of their own.
  • Elite Agents Above the Law: This is the sum total power when one is a member of the Thirteen Crowns. Within the demanse granted to a member by the Three Greats, that Crown has unrivaled authority. They are responsible for their own actions but inside the boundaries of their property they have absolute power.
  • Emotion Eater: There are some clans of demons who imbibe emotions to survive. The Zepar clan favor love and can consume it in the form of the items of love and devotion fans of theirs send them. Whether they are love letters coated with ink and a side of bookmarks, or stuffed animals, they eat the physical object and take in the love energy from the item. However, because they feed on love if one were to eat hate mail or hear hateful things towards them, it is a poison to them and they can sustain physical harm from it.
  • Epic Fail:
    • Iruma, at the beginning, tries whatever he could to either get less noticed or get expelled from the school, as he was terrified at the thought of being discovered and eaten. However, everything he tries always backfires to make him even more noticed by the staff and the students.
    • Clara's attempts at "seducing". This is because she is so childlike that she took all of her instructions with a Literal-Minded approach (told to wear perfume so she dunks it on herself, told to wear makeup so she looks like a clown, told to dress up so she gets a prop costume, told to hold onto a guy so she hangs on him.)
  • Everyone Has Standards:
    • They may be demons, but even the group he was in were creeped out by how much Amy got off on misery, even if it was his own.
    • Even Bachiko is shocked upon learning what Iruma's parents had done to him and shows concerns for his well-being.
    • When Kalego thinks his students snapped from the pressure of the finals approaching, not realizing they were dancing and singing as part of a memory learning technique, he considers giving them less homework.
  • Evil Makes You Ugly: What happens when demons have succumbed to their Wicked Phases for too long and returned to Origins. They truly become demonic and evil, and become a lot more dangerous. This helped clue Azz in when he encounters Amy who has the same eyes as the Origins demons.
  • Evolving Credits:
    • The opening for Season 2 initially has several spoiler characters from future arcs shadowed out. As shown by how Wicked Phase Iruma was fully shown after being first revealed, those shadows get removed once they are properly introduced in the anime.
    • The ending for Season 2 is in constant flux, with most of the silhouetted visuals staying the same, but the full-color reveals of the silhouettes changing. In the shot of Ameri being read to by Iruma, Ameri eventually gets replaced by Goemon. Later, the girls in their theme park attire are replaced by the silhouetted version being printed out as a photo, with the reading shot being replaced by Ameri grabbing the photo... and then she is later replaced by Allocer in that shot. Keroli is initially in both the opening and ending group shots, but later appears as Kuromu in the ending group. Kuromu in mid-performance is later replaced by Sabnock and Asmodeus singing together.
    • The opening for Season 3 follows last season's example:
      • The start of each episode has the narrator state the Misfit's arc goal to attain Dalet Rank. As he speaks, the Misfits are grouped by their rank and shown in highest rank to lowest. After the Harvest Festival is over and several members are promoted, they are moved to their new tier with Soi's image becoming a fast blur.
      • The new characters coming in to tutor the Misfit Class be either shadowed out or outright absent in Episode 1, with Bachiko shooting an arrow into the sky being the only clear shot of any of them. Starting from Episode 2, which comes after all the tutors have been properly introduced, the opening is changed to fully showcase all the tutors, both as a group and facing their respective students.
    • The season 3 end credits remain mostly static with Iruma, Azz, and Clara making some food and it being enjoyed by their classmates who bring something and then the tutors. The end card, however, changes to some new dish that is usually reflective of something in that particular episode.
  • Exact Words:
    • When Iruma was made to give a speech on opening day, Sullivan gave him one with a note saying this is so he won't "trip and fall on your first day". After reading it one of the teachers tells him it was a forbidden spell that if said incorrectly would have blown him apart, but since he said it correctly it will prevent him from tripping or falling for the entire day.
    • Kalego's conditions for the Misfit Class to move into the Royal One states they must get signed permission from every faculty member. Iruma and the class initially think this just means the teachers, but Kalego is referring to the gardeners, janitors, librarians, food services, school store employees, and so on, as well. Thankfully the rest of the staff, impressed by Iruma's ongoing kindness to them, shows up with the slips without being asked.
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: Iruma has this happen to him after he bumps into Ameri and sees her copy of a Manga. He starts explaining how it brings back memories, states he can read it, and wonders what a copy of it is doing in the Netherworld. Its at this point he realized he all but told the demon in front of him he was a human.
  • Extranormal Institute: Babyls is a school for Demons. Besides the student body it actually acts like a normal school.
  • Failed a Spot Check:
    • During the flying race in their first year, Azz doesn't notice that Clara was riding on his back since the start until she started talking. Because she refuses to get off him, and Azz takes first, Clara gets second place.
    • In the Harvest Festival, it's mentioned that the fake check in stand that Jazz and Allocer have made could be spotted as a fake if people paid close attention, but they rarely are because they are excited about winning and it makes them easy marks. This comes in handy later in the arc when Allocer tricks Orobas into handing him the Pot of Ending after he stole it from Lied.
    • During the Heartbreaker Competiton Ipos and Oswell fail to notice that Ipos pulled four first years and Allocer from Atori's grip, but once Atori has fled only three first-years are present. The teachers don't realize one of the students shrunk herself and hid herself in Allocer's pocket, thus allowing Team Jazz to hold out with one balloon until the time limit hits.
  • Faint in Shock: While he doesn't quite pass out, Balam completely collapses limp to the floor in shock when Iruma reveals he's a human. He gets over this fairly quickly, though.
  • Fantastic Flora: The demon world is full of fantastical and magical flora. The demonic version of strawberries appear to run.
  • Fictional Currency: The Netherworld uses a currency called "Vills".
  • Filler: While there has been plenty of Adaptation Expansion and Pragmatic Adaptation throughout the anime series, with the Season 1 finale being half-original and half-manga-based, Season 2 Episode 5 was the first genuine case of actual filler, with only the beginning and ending being lifted from the manga while the middle 80% is entirely original content.
  • Fisher King: As Sullivan once explains to Iruma, becoming the Demon King doesn't mean just becoming the figure of respect and adoration amongst demonkind. The very title effectively turns whoever holds it into a Domain Holder of the entire demon realm, not only shaping and reshaping the land as he sees fit, but also being capable of exerting More than Mind Control over the entire demon race, able to make demonkind do whatever he wants regardless of how willing the masses are. It's for good reason that being allowed to possess the title is very heavily restricted to only somebody who can get the complete trust and support of all Thirteen Crowns, as the wrong person holding the title would be capable of so much chaos, such as the terrorist groups that desire demonkind to "return to their origins" as maliciously bloodthirsty and destructive monsters.
  • Five-Second Foreshadowing: Before the start of the Ranking Race, you will see Clara isn't among the group.
  • Floating Continent: While there are a few medium-sized islands scattered across the planet-wide ocean, the vast majority of inhabited land exists on continental masses of stone that inexplicably float in the sky.
  • Flower Motifs: The Netherworld has its own version of hanakotoba. This being from demons and other creatures in this realm, they can have some rather... extreme meanings. One character receives a bouquet from an admirer with all these in it, and a comrade warns him to be careful around this girl.
    • The Macabrose means "I only have eyes for you."
    • The Bat Lily means "I will never let you go."
    • The Hell Herb means "Until Death Do Us Part."
    • The Lotus Pocus means "You are my one and only one."
    • The Corrosanthemum means "I love you down to your marrow."
    • The Morguerite means "Pure Love and Deep Love."
    • The Darkelion means "I want us to be one."
    • The Spectral Violet means "If I lose you, I bid the world farewell."
  • Foreshadowing:
    • In Episode 2, when the school newspaper shows how Iruma managed to make Kalego his familiar, there's also a photo of an idol girl, and a girl with glasses passing by clenches her fists with her thumbs inside. The latter girl is Kerori, who will become Iruma's classmate, and the idol is Kerori's alter ego Kuromu.
    • Iruma's ring keeps causing him to grab Amy by the throat. It is later revealed by Arikured that he was doing that to warn Iruma that he was a Bitch in Sheep's Clothing.
    • During the Kuromu Arc, Iruma started figuring out that Kuromu was in fact his classmate Kerori when he noticed that both Kerori and Kuromu had a habit of hiding their thumbs inside their fists (followed up with the more obvious clues like Kerori's glasses, schedule book, ice magic, etc.). This foreshadowed Iruma's Awesome by Analysis ability, which is better shown in the Royal One's Arc.
    • The Ending for Season 2 shows Soi Purson vanish from the group at the start of the song, showing his Bloodline Ability long before it is revealed in the series.
    • Nafra is assumed to be a boy by most people during his initial appearances. But then during the music festival, Nafra gets paired up with Ronove, a man who infamously can't stand working with other men and only works with women when given the choice. Ronove's only protest at this is that he thinks Nafra stinks too much to work with, and then proceeds to misname Nafra as "Natasha". Then comes chapter 209 where it is revealed that Nafra is indeed a girl under her magical robe which allows her to change her size at will.
    • During the Harvest Festival, Jazz and Allocer are shown tricking other students to steal their points and the story establishes the distinction between attacking other participants, which will disqualify you, and deceiving them, which is perfectly legal. The Arc Villain hunts down the Misfits, including Jazz and Allocer, by using Mind Rape magic on them because that's not an attack, it's a (horrifying and traumatic) deception.
  • Forgot Flanders Could Do That: After the first few chapters showcased the demonic attitudes of demonkind, shortly into the story demons became mostly portrayed as decently human-like outside a few quirks. But the story occasionally has the demons act in ways that show they're still genuinely demonic, such as their Lack of Empathy and biological inclination towards being ruthlessly evil monsters.
  • Forgotten Birthday: In chapter 182, it is revealed that Iruma's birthday is October 4th, which at this point in the story that was 21 days ago.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: If you pay attention to the middle part of the anime's first and second openings, you can see a cream-colored cat floating. Said cat is Osamu Nishi's Author Avatar. Purson can also be seen in the background in the same time frame.
  • A Friend in Need: While the concept of "friends" is harder for some demons to understand than others, they do understand kindness done to them and the need to repay it in kind.
    • After Iruma's First Year Battler Party, Iruma experiences this in both giving to a friend and receiving help from Azz and Clara. He goes to see his first Kuromu concert and gets invited by the staff to greet her in her dressing room. While there, he is Innocently Insensitive to Kuromu/Kerori's desire to stand out by complimenting her on staying obscure. This enrages her so much she strains herself magically and passes out. Recognizing he needs to do something to help fix the mess he causes, he brings in Azz and Clara without revealing Kerori's secret to them. They agree to help Iruma quickly. To give Kumoru time to recover, the three dress up in cute dem-dol outfits and become her opening act, being cute enough to keep the audience entertained until Kuromu can join in later. She is incredibly grateful to Iruma for his kindness as it is a very un-demonlike thing to do.
    • Prior to and during the Royal One arc Iruma was nothing but kind to faculty of Babyls, helping them with different tasks and duties, or just enjoying their cooking. So without asking by Iruma when they all learn Iruma and his class need signed permission slips to move into the Royal One Classroom, they all sign them and present them to Iruma and Kalego just after it looks like Kalego is going to win on a technicality. Hundreds of faculty members all signed the slips without protest or issue simply because of the kindness of one boy.
  • Funny Background Event:
    • After Iruma's First Year Battler Party, Eiko is bemoaning how she hasn't seen Iruma or Ameri all day. She misses Iruma running behind her when going to an office.
    • During the Walter Park arc, Opera and Ameri are fighting a giant panther-rat while Clara is seen hanging onto one of its tails in the background like it is a ride.
  • Gilligan Cut: The chapter after Iruma's birthday, while getting ready for school the next day, he peps himself up saying that he's going to become a strong man worthy of his current rank. The very next panel, Kerori tells him that he's going to team up with her to become the cutest female Evidols in the Netherworld.
  • Got Volunteered:
    • Kalego suffers this from the Principal:
      • It's well known among the staff and students that he hates delinquents, rowdy students, and people who generally cause trouble for others. He was assigned homeroom teacher of the Misfit Class while on sick leave.
      • In chapter 68, he is forced to make home visits and give his assessments to the parents or guardians of each of his students.
      • In chapter 69 he is forced to be an escort of Iruma and his friends at Walter Park.
    • After the Magic Item Research Club is temporarily disbanded, Ameri made Iruma become a member of the Student Council.
  • G-Rated Drug:
    • In chapter 163, Balam creates a strength enhancing medicine for Iruma that has the side effect of lightheadedness for a short period of time. It turns out the medicine is so strong that Iruma ends up drunk.
    • During the Misfit Class' gathering in chapter 198, Lied brought a bottle of "Relax Juice", which seems to be a substitute for alcohol that's safe for consumption by kids. Unfortunately, Lied didn't know that the juice needed to be diluted in water before drinking, so everyone (including himself) ended up getting high anyway.
  • Gratuitous Foreign Language: The ten ranks in demon society are named after the first ten letters of the Hebrew alphabet.
  • Guyliner: All of the men of the Demon Realm seem to paint their nails with black nail polish (or a variety of other colors in the colored images), as do women. Iruma begins to do this as well during the Music Festival arc after he chips his nail while practicing piano and one of his classmates recommends it, with it being revealed there that the polish is made of a stabilizing agent to stave off the nail-cracking problems that come from overworking a person's fingers, providing a sensible reason for both girls and guys using it.
  • Hey, Wait!: After Iruma and Jazz have enraged Kalego by Iruma saying he plans to use a familiar summoning seal to make Kalego give his signature for the Misfits to move to the Royal One, and Jazz uses that distraction to steal Kalego's notebook, the pair depart when Kalego orders them to stop. While scared Kalego has caught onto the theft, he simply wants the seal so Iruma cannot use it on him.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Kalego, as a familiar, demands Iruma to undo the summoning. Robin stops him from doing so by citing the school guidelines "be dignified and never allow specific exemptions". The person who wrote said guideline was Kalego himself.
  • Hold the Line:
    • As part of their Unspoken Plan Guarantee during the Heartbreaker Competition, Kamui and Azz agree if they encounter a teacher, Kamui will take care of both sets of first years and run while Azz fights the teacher solo.
    • Not long after this moment, Kamui takes up the line to hold against Mononoki Morax as the First Years try to put in enough magical power to stop Sullivan from "awakening" and joining the teachers.
  • Hope Spot:
    • During the Heartbreaker Competition in Iruma's Second Year Team Valac successfully inhibits Stolas' ability to play a flute and control her plants, and so try to leg it. However before they can get very far, Stolas uses a puppet parasite grass to make Strow break her own balloon.
    • One of the guidelines the teachers follow for the Heartbreaker Competition boils down to this. When they encounter the Misfit and their First Years, the teacher should only go after one heart and give the team a chance to run away or counter-strike. Once that is done, then the second heart is fair game.
    • Twice during the Heartbreaker Competition the teachers have protected their students from Atori's attacks using their impressive magics. One the threat is vanquished, the teacher approach the Misfits and their teams in a kind manner asking if they are unharmed, only to then strike the open balloons as the competition is still on-going and the teachers only paused their attack until the threat was removed.
  • Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: The Pemopemo clan plays with this. While the men and women of the clan are about 1ft tall naturally, their bloodline power is different based on their sex: Men can grow significantly larger while women can shrink in size.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Ameri states if you wish to cause a ruckus, "DO IT QUIETLY!".
  • Improbably Predictable: By their second year Sabro knows Azz well enough to tell his sister to do anything in order to prevent Azz from abandoning his First years during the Heartbreaker Competition to go help Iruma. So when she hears Azz muttering about Iruma being in danger, she forcifully yanks his coat, breaking his concentration. Azz is briefly annoyed Sabro told his sister this.
  • Inconsistent Spelling:
    • The name of the Hogwarts Expy that Iruma and co. attend could be read as "Babyls", "Babirus", "Babyrus" and "Babylus". The anime for the most part goes with the first one, while the manga uses them interchangeably depending on who's translating that day.
    • The name demons give to clubs can be translated as Battra, Battler, and Batora. Like with the school name, the anime mostly sticks with the first one, while the manga uses whatever the current translator of the chapter decided to translate it as.
  • Internal Reveal:
    • It isn't until Chapter 19 of the manga and Episode 12 of the anime that Iruma finds out Ameri is the Student Council President after knowing her for several weeks.
    • Chapter 64 has Iruma tell Balam that he is a human.
    • In Chapter 142, Baal, Kiriwo, and Ocho learn that he's a human from a bug planted on his clothes.
    • In Chapter 146, Sullivan and Opera tell Bachiko that Iruma's a human.
    • In Chapter 184, Kerori reveals to Lied that she and Iruma are Kuromu and Irumi.
    • In Chapter 319, Kalego puts two and two together and realized Iruma's human heritage.
  • Interspecies Romance: There are quite a number of girls who either are romantically pining after Iruma or at least find him cute. All of whom are demons while he's human. Of course, besides Ameri, who is aware he might be a human but doesn't know for certain, most of them think he's a demon, so it doesn't come to mind for the majority of them. But Iruma is very much aware that he's not the same species as any of the girls around him, even if he's not aware some of them like him that way.
  • Irony: Within the demon world, glasses tend to have a very different purpose. Instead of being used to see better, they tend to be used (with enchantments) to make others see you worse. That is to say they hide you from the vision of those they are enchanted to hide you from. For instance, after saving Walter Park, Iruma is given glasses specifically designed to hide him from the paparazzi that were constantly hounding him for interviews.
  • It Only Works Once: The familiar-summoning ritual for that specific demon and magical beast is a one time thing. If a student chooses to end their one-year contract with the their familiar, then when they do the summoning ritual once more the student won't receive their former familiar. That said, this only applies to demons. Humans can resummon the same demon if that demon is physically closest to the human summoner when the human is summoning a new familiar once more.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: When Iruma is in his evil cycle, he is more blunt and direct about his feelings. When he calls out Kalego, and by extendion the rest of the teachers, for giving the Misfits a room with broken windows, mold, and permit the students to dump trash outside of it rather than go all the way to the dump, Kalego doesn't actually defend the conditions of the classroom and acknowledges it isn't an ideal situation but there is no other classroom for homeroom available.
  • Just in Time: By happenstance no less. During the Heartbreaker Competition, when Jazz is about to endure an excruciating toture at the hands of Professor Marbas, Iruma, Chima, and Garson crash into the room when falling after escaping Robin's counterattack. While initially relieved to be safe, Iruma realizes what his group has fallen into and ustilizes his Fledglings and his own magic to stall Marbas and free Jazz before they escape once more through the ground.
  • Klingons Love Shakespeare: The normally stoic Ameri had an obsession with shoujo manga and the odd feelings it gives her. Her relationship with Iruma stems from him being the only person who can read it to her.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: During the Heartbreaker Competition, when Azz and Kamui team up they know Azz is the stronger fighter. So if they encounter a teacher, Kamui is to leave with both sets of students, while Azz holds the line.
  • Lack of Empathy:
    • Chapter 77 reveals this is a defining trait of all demons. If there is a problem that doesn't personally affect them or someone they already care about and the danger is too high, then they will not get involved. In this specific instance, only Iruma (being a human, and an All-Loving Hero with Chronic Hero Syndrome at that) acts to save some kids trapped in rubble during the Walter Park fight because of the danger of the monster near them and the area might collapse puts off even the staff of the company. Even Azz and Balam don't move until Iruma gets involved.
    • Both of Iruma's parents are incapable of feeling any sense of empathy as they had no problem making their son's life a living hell before eventually selling him to Sullivan for money.
  • Last-Second Word Swap: After witnessing Ameri take down the panther rat monster during the Walter Park arc Opera offers Ameri a job when she graduates to be their assistant but swaps to saying the principal's at the last moment.
  • Last Villain Stand: The leader of the Six Fingers notes that the magical beasts are made from their own magic, and so are reflective of the Six Fingers own personality traits. As a result, the refusal to go down easily makes the magical beasts try this twice. First, once they are individually defeated, they merge into one single being. However, when that one is defeated quickly by Opera, Kalego, and Balam working together, it rises up again, intending unleashing all the mana inside of it into one focused blast. As attacking it at this state would just cause it to blow up, not even Kalego, Balam, and Opera try to fight it in this form. Iruma uses the Ring of Gluttony to absorb all the magic in the merged beast to stop it.
  • Lemony Narrator: The narrator is typically very professional at exlaining things in the Demon World and Iruma's ignorance of certain things. The Narrator will, however, still call Iruma a "pushover" for his Extreme Doormat tendencies, and Iruma's parents "scum" and other similar words for their vile traits.
  • Let No Crisis Go to Waste: While Kalego is stuck chaperoning some of his students at Walter Park a terrorist attack happens and a giant Mountain Bull, a minotaur-like monster with a snake's bottom, is attacking near him and his students. He decides this is an excellent time for a pop quiz of sorts, and has his students see if they can defeat the beast. When they are barely successful in knocking the beast down but celebrate too soon, he moves in and effortlessly saves them, decreasing their grades for this action.
  • Letting the Air out of the Band: During the Harvest Festival when Iruma and Lied show up with The Legend Leaf, it is so underwhelming that there is a noticeable whoosh noise as it focuses on them.
  • Lima Syndrome: A weirdly sympathetic example: Sullivan is guilty of buying a kid and ripping away from his home without consent, but he wants a grandchild he can care for. Iruma's parents and those he is forced to work for are all scum who abuse and use a child for hard labor. So, Iruma staying with him is definitely an improvement compared to his biological parents.
  • Long Runner: In-Universe example. In the series, the manga Hatsukoi Memory is shown to be hundreds of volumes long. The bookcase holding volumes seems to be 10ft to 12ft tallnote  and about 7ft wide with seven shelves. Each shelf is filled with volumes of this series. For reference, a show shows the series has at least 300 volumes, the highest number of volumes mangas in real life ever got to is 205.
  • Loophole Abuse: This is the name of the game for most every demon competition. If there isn't a specific rule against the action, then it is fair game to try such action.
    • At Walter Park, there is a shooting game where people competing against each other can claim the loser's prizes as well. There is nothing specifically against the opponents interfering or outright blocking the shot with their body.
    • Jazz and Allocer realize that thier tutor's game of "Which hand has the coin?" doesn't forbid them from stealing the coin mid-air and Jazz having it in his own. Sadly, their tutor is too fast for them and still keeps the coin, but is impressed with their intelligence.
    • While there are strict rules in the Harvest Festival, the teachers monitor for violations of those specifically worded rules. Anything not violating them is thus fair game. It fits with the Festival being a survival challenge and see what means the participants will go through to survive and gain points.
      • Students must collect the plants and ingredients to claim points on them. There is nothing against either taming the beasts or befriending them, rather than killing them. Balam won his year's competition by using this tactic.
      • Students are forbidden from directly attacking each other with either magic or abilities. This has three loopholes:
        1. If the demon uses more passive abilities, like Koko Orobas' Trauma power making people see something they fear to scare them away or angers them into attacking him, or commands the monsters to attack participants like Camui and Kerori do, is fine.
        2. Likewise, using disguises and deception to steal away collected things from other participants are not against the rules.
        3. Lastly nothing is against students willingly giving their items to another student of their own accord before the items are categorized and assessed by faculty-manned stations.
      • A rule breaker is expelled and not allowed to return to the forest. There is nothing about a student leaving to go to the faculty monitoring room, look at the cameras, and then return to particiate.
      • Azz attempts to use the claim he is Iruma's halberd as justification to let him stay with Iruma even after being disqualified for physically attacking Orobas. The camera demon refuses this logic and continues to drag Azz out of the forest.
    • During the Heartbreaker Competition when the Misfits face off against the teachers, summoning familiars is not forbidden. So when Kalego joins the competition, Iruma neutralizes him by summoning him and then holding him in his jacket. As Kalego cannot directly harm Iruma or be severely injured because of their contract magic, he agrees to not go after the other students while he is bound in Iruma's jacket.
  • Made of Indestructium: During Iruma's First Year, the teachers have a banquet to celebrate a successful Harvest Festival. They play some Bingo and Kalego wins the top prize: a golden statue of the chair-demon in his egg-shape form. In the episode's Su-Ki-Ma extra, Kalego tries to use his familiar to destroy the statue, but it remains unharmed to Kalego's frustation.
  • Mass "Oh, Crap!":
    • The Misfit Class has this reaction when their tutors are looking forward to training them even harder than before.
    • During the Heartbreaker Competition in their Second Year, the Misfit Class students who haven't been eleminated yet all freak out when there is an announcement that Principal Sullivan will be joining the Teachers in a short time. The only way to prevent this is for four demons to work together and stop it and they know there will be at least one teacher guarding the location.
  • Meaningful Background Event:
    • After Iruma temporarily joins the Student Council, Ameri explains how that evening's Blood Moon could awaken demons' "evil cycle" making them act feral and aggressive to other students. She briefly interrupts the explanation to roundhouse kick a demon about to devour a smaller one to establish her point, and sharp-eyed readers can catch that same demon grabbing his victim in the student-packed panel just prior.
    • In Chapter 181, a Super-Deformed Clara can be seen behind Lied as he thinks out loud about how he would like to exchange phone numbers with Elizabetta. At the end of the chapter Elizabetta looks for Lied and wants to trade phone numbers with him, stating Clara informed her about it.
  • Might as Well Not Be in Prison at All: Despite having everyone of the security forces in the room, the moment Sullivan decides he no longer wants to be there anymore, they know full well there is nothing they can do to stop him from leaving.
  • Might Makes Right:
    • Within the Andro clan, this is their defining rule. As a meritocracy of thieves, the victim of theft is the one at fault. Jazz endures harassment from his elder brother Rock but no one will stop him because of this attitude.
    • Within the domain of the Thirteen Crowns, each Crown has unparalleled authority. Baal tells the story of one member who gained land with a river Derkila loved and wanted preserved. As that Crown is now master of this domain, the Crown had the river destroyed and a castle placed upon it.
  • The Mirror Shows Your True Self: The Pheene clan can cast specific illusions on targets to influence other people, so if she is protecting an ally the clan member can call for an illusion that will stop the attacker from further attacking them. At the level Marianne Pheene can use during the Heartbreaker Competition, the illusion will not be captured by cameras. As a result, when Professor Momonoki, who is being made to see her infatuation injured before her and she takes his photo, it is later shown to be just pictures of the student the illusion was cast upon.
  • Misplaced Vegetation: In-Universe, Iruma accidentally conjures up a massive cherry blossom tree. This is what tips off Ameri to Iruma really being a human since plants like that don't grow in the demon world.
  • Mistaken Identity: In chapter 274, Leid is at a Sabbathnote  with Jazz when Jazz compliments the evidol "Lindy." The narration notes that Jazz believes "Lindy" to be Leid's sister who he hadn't seen before. Jazz is ignorant to Lindy being Leid in disguise and that Leid's actual sister is sitting across from him, who respectively thinks Leid lied about her to get popular.
  • Missed Him by That Much:
    • In the Volume 2 extras, Eiko is enjoying watching the flowers bloom and dreams of Iruma being with her. She fails to notice him walking up in cleaning garb and politely takes the garbage away.
    • In another extra, Eiko is invited by her friends to join her to a group date with some guys. Eiko declines, unaware that Iruma is going to attend the same event.
  • Monster Is a Mommy: Sabnock and Iruma learn that hulking gigantic leader of Cutthroat Valley is the parent of a bus-sized bird Iruma befriended previously and helped out.
  • Mood Whiplash:
    • Episode 8 has a scene that cuts frequently, in an escalating manner, between Iruma and Ameri's rather serious conversation (about Iruma deciding on a dream of his own for the first time), and Clara's battle to break in and play with Iruma while Azz frantically tries to stop her.
    • In chapter 175, after Arikured gives a heartwarming speech to Iruma about how they are bound together, Iruma points out to him he no longer appears to be attached to the ring. He immediately books it out the window, only to be slingshot back into the room.
  • Mook Chivalry: This is a guideline but not a hard rule for the teachers participating in the Heartbreaker Competition. As it is meant to test the Misfits and their Fledgling First Years, and break the Misfits pride enough so they don't become arrogant, the teachers are encouraged to allow a teacher to handle a team or two on their own. However, when over a dozen students have converged on Momonoki as she guards the vat to release Chair Demon Sullivan and successfully wear her down in a battle of attrition, Professor Buer uses his magic to heal her and recover her to full strength as her current 11-against-1 is hardly fair. He then joins her when Sabnok enters the fray. Then, hidden in the shadows, is Robin waiting to fire his arrows at the opportune moment.
  • Moon Logic Puzzle: The requirements to obtain the Legendary Leaf during the Harvest Festival are incredibly obtuse, something that the Legendary Leaf itself admits after revealing its sentience. To even know where to find the legendary seed and pot needed to create the leaf, the participant must decipher a riddle only known by the animals in the festival. Not only would it be impossible for most demons to know the riddle's existence because they can't understand animals, but it's also counter-intuitive for the tournament since the participants need to beat and collect animals to gain points. Then, to get the seed and the pot, the participant must enter two different caves and face a powerful entity in each (thankfully, there is a solution other than direct fighting for both). On their way, the participant must also help a trapped student who seems to be another participant but is secretly in cahoots with the school staff since said student holds the watering can needed to make the leaf bloom. Even with all these secret conditions fulfilled, the participant needs plenty of mana to make the leaf bloom. According to the Legendary Leaf, the solution was intentionally overly complicated so it could only be done by a demon who thinks differently than other demons, which is why Iruma could do it since he's secretly a human and his unusual compassion was one key to win the leaf. Teaming up with other students also allowed him to win, since having Lied as his teammate divided the research time for the seed and the pot and most of Iruma's classmates helped him and Lied in some way, which is quite notable since demons tend to be selfish, but all of Iruma's classmates were influenced by Iruma's unique good nature.
  • Muggle Sports, Super Athletes: One form of physical activity demons like doing is called Cannon Ball Execution, which while it has a background of dangerousness, in modern day it's functionally just dodgeball. But as Iruma realizes before he can get too relaxed, this is dodgeball being played by demons with dangerous magic and Super-Strength, meaning for a normal human like him it's life-threatening.
  • Multi-Gendered Outfit: Back when they were a student at Babyls, Opera wore the female uniform top and the male uniform bottom.
  • Mundane Made Awesome:
    • One of the forbidden spells, that if pronounced incorrectly, would result in the speaker having their limbs explode, makes the speaker unable to fall over for the day. It's more useful than it sounds.
    • While the acquiring of Royal One by the Misfit Class is for the most part a genuinely badass spectacle of manipulation and skill, the thing that gets the most dramatically epic attention out of everything is the simple act of unlocking and opening a door. Sure, it's a massive door with magically sealing chains, but it's still a door being opened that has the most grandiose scene in the entire Royal One Arc.

    N-Z
  • Noodle Incident: Whatever happened that resulted in Iruma facing off a bear and getting shot at by Mobsters.
  • Not Hyperbole: Early on, Clara stated her shoes have names. It seems like it's just to show off that she is a Cloudcuckoolander, but it turns out that they are actually alive, much to Iruma's shock.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: In chapter 288, Opera comments on Iruma's Character Development leading him to getting Amaryillis Asmodeus to be his protector at the upcoming Deviculum to assuage Opera's concerns makes him a troublesome of a master as Sullivan makes Opera's life.
  • Not-So-Omniscient Council of Bickering: The Thirteen Crowns are the thirteen most powerful demons in the netherworld, and regularly meet at the "Thirteen Dinner" in Babel Tower to discuss the affairs of the netherworld... but in the absence of a Demon King, the meetings tend to become unfocused arguments, and outright brawls at the dining room table are seemingly commonplace.
  • Not What It Looks Like:
    • Iruma decides to practice his ring's new ability to change his outfit. It changes him into a frilly girls outfit just as Ameri walks in on him. Ameri has nightmares about it for three days straight.
    • Ameri comes across Iruma, once again in a frilly dress, on top of Kerori.
  • Number of the Beast: The number 666 (or 66, or just 6) has been inserted in so many different places so many times that a separate page was needed to hold the examples.
  • Number Obsession: "The Cult of Numeral 2" is exactly what its name suggests: a bunch of demons obsessed with the number "2", to the point of worshipping it like a god. At first it sounds like a myth or rumor, with even the people that know about it doubting it's real, but later it's revealed to truly exist, with Ocho being a member. He was actually manipulating Orobas into becoming a false number 1 so that he could be a genuine number 2.
  • Odd Name Out: Ameri and her father Henri rather strongly stand out from all of the other demons in the story, because while every other family has a surname based on a Goetic demon, their surname is Azazel, which is instead the name of a Biblical fallen angel. What this means for them is currently unclear.
  • Once an Episode: Every episode of the anime has a stinger between the credits and preview. They all start with Clara saying "sukima" in varying pitches and tones, followed by short clips with simpler animation and a less-detailed art-style. Some of them are based on omakes included in the volume releases, others are anime-original, but each of them is a small scene that relates to the events of the episode they accompany in some way.
  • One True Threesome: In-universe, Clara declares herself, Iruma, and Azz to be the "Love Trio", openly declaring that she loves Iruma and Azz, and knowing that such feelings are also shared the same way all round by both Azz and Iruma. Iruma has declared his belief that he feels himself, Azz, and Clara are what he can only describe as soulmates. Also, ever since then Azz has enforced this dynamic by declaring that the position of soulmates for Iruma is reserved solely for himself and Clara.
  • Our Demons Are Different: The only things every demon have in common are that they can fly with wings and use magic, but they can differ in size ranging from the size of action figures to giants, look like anthropomorphic animals, just look plain weird, and then there are the ones who look almost exactly like humans except for their horns and/or tails. However, there is still a limit to how different they are since they still have a humanoid form with four limbs and a head, which means it is very unusual for Atori to suddenly sprout four extra arms and Behemolt to have a Belly Mouth with the implication that they were both genetically altered to obtain these characteristics.
  • The Owl-Knowing One: The Rank Owls are three-eyed owls which observe first-year Babyls students as they participate in the Flying Race. On their bellies are pouches from which the first-years will take their rank badge. Kallego notes that these birds are neutral and not able to be bribbed to attain a higher rank. They also have in their pocket rarer trinkets which can appear under unique circumstances. When Iruma puts his hand in, as he is a human, he doesn't pull out a badge, but the owl screeches for the first time in a hundred years and flies away. On Iruma's right hand a golden ring is slipped on without him noticing it.
  • Parodies for Dummies: When Sullivan buys some spell books while out shopping with Iruma to help the boy prepare for learning magic in the next school term, he takes up the shopkeeps offer to buy a "Demon King's Prophecy for Dummies" scroll, which truly is the most dumbed down and basic you can get to describe the Demon King prophecy, listing only the barest fundamental qualities of the prophesied future king.
  • Plague of Good Fortune: Due to his fear of being eaten by demons, Iruma struggles not to stand out...only to continuously stumble into success, fame, and attention.
  • Plausible Deniability: After the events of the Grand Deviculum when new members of the Thirteen Crowns are announced, Kalego is warned by his brother Iruma is dangerous and not to get closer to the boy. After going through his Evil cycle to release his stress, Kalego has a meeting with Balam. He tells Balam not to answer the following question: Is Iruma a human? With Balam not answering, Kalego now knows his student and summoner is a human.
  • Plot Hole: A minor example, but at one point Iruma and Lied bond over the fact that they're the only boys in their class that still use the pronoun "Boku". The problem is, they are expressly not speaking Japanese; they're speaking the demon language, with Iruma using Translator Microbes, so the conversation wouldn't really make sene in-universe unless the demon language happens to have identical pronoun traditions.
  • Pointy Ears: All demons have long pointed ears, with the exact length and shape depending on the demon, which acts as a good signifying detail that differentiates the human Iruma (who has normal ears) from everybody else, no matter what form they take.
  • Power Limiter: There are clothing items which can limit the strength a demon can utilize. After the Heartbreaker competition, the Misfits muse that the costumes and domino mask the teachers wore are such limiters because once Atori goes on his rampage and the teachers look to subdue him, they remove their costumes and are given authorization to hold nothing back in stopping Atori and protecting the students.
  • The Power of Blood: Iruma discovers that human blood appears to be able to heal demons.
  • Pragmatic Adaptation: After one whole season of adapting everything in the manga while also expanding the story to fill out each episode, starting with Season 2 Episode 2, the anime started removing a couple scenes here and there to get through the story quicker. In this case, it removed two scenes of Iruma walking while carrying things for his student council training, the magic circuit puzzle scene reiterating Iruma's lack of imagination, and a hallway scene where the council members and Iruma directly express worry after Ameri went missing following getting called in by somebody pretending to be the Broadcasting Battler. The carrying scenes were just unneeded extra training content, the puzzle scene mainly repeats details from Episode 1, and the worry scene simply adds to the obvious concern they showed in the scenes before and after it, so they were easily removed without disrupting the story flow.
  • Protectorate: While the teachers of Babyls can be cruel, dangerous, uncaring and run the gammut of overly nice and excited to stern and petty, the students are their students. When a genuine threat beyond the students' capabilities appears, they will destroy that threat. It is exemplified in their Badass Creed: "We pledge our lives to protect our students above all, from the dreadful enemies that aim for the treasure. So, to education."
  • Public Secret Message: Ameri tells her father that Iruma is "A Very Excellent Demon". He seems to understand what she means and leaves Iruma alone after that.
  • Pun:
    • The cellphones in this world are called Hellphones.
    • Iruma drinks Hell Grey Tea.
    • There's actully quite a few puns involving the character 魔 (read "ma"), although the Crunchyroll translation can seem like it's forcing itself to make the puns work at times (e.g. hellraiser clock = mezamashi dokei note ). For another example, in the series title the word mairu is a formal way of saying "to come" or "to go", but it uses that "ma" and a more standard way of saying "to enter" (normally read hairu, but can also be read iru).
    • They usually replaced "very" with "devi" as an adverb.
  • Quizzical Tilt: Both Iruma and Ameri tilt their head to the side with a confused expression when Opera tells them they don't understand the concept of cooking.
Opera: Don't tilt your heads at me!
  • Rank Up:
    • Demon society is heavily influenced by their ranking system. The ranks ascend from Aleph (1) to Yodh (10)note  and due to this, ascending the ranks is seen as a means to gain prominence. Adolescents typically lack any formal rank until they join a school like Babyls. At Babyls there are several rank evaluation exams for each year to determine if a demon's rank should rise or fall.
    • For the First-Year at Babyls the exams are the Flying Test, which sets them on their initial ranking, then Canonball Execution, The Battler Party, First-Term Final Exams, the Harvest Festival, and the Music Festival.
    • Second-Year students have similar exams, however because of the Misfit Class' unique situation where all thirteen are at least rank Dalet when most second year students have yet to achieve that, the teachers give them a new practical examination they dubbed the Heartbreaker Competition. In the Heartbreaker, the Misfits square off against the teachers of Bablys aided by twenty-six specially selected first-year students. This exam also allows any participating first-years to rank up as well if they demonstrate adequate skills.
  • Reaction Shot: At the end of chapter 196, Ameri, Leid, and Iruma's faces are shown in a shocked manner when Kumoru announces she will be competing in next year's Evidol Games with the same team, meaning them.
  • Red Herring:
    • We are lead to believe the flamboyant president of the Discipline Division is the one behind Ameri's personality change as his group has the most to gain from the Student Council failing. It turns out to be just a random student who wanted to see a sweet version of Ameri.
    • It's initially suggested that Amy is going to bring down the demon world's ranking system that only values power because of mistreatment he experienced for lacking power, centered around one particular incident where he and his only friend were bullied. It's later shown that he actually wants to cause mayhem and destruction because he loves to witness others' suffering, with the previously mentioned defining incident being when he finally realized he felt ecstacy from seeing his friend miserable.
  • Religious and Mythological Theme Naming: Most of the demons' family names come straight from the Ars Goetia.
  • Remembered Too Late: Sullivan calls up Iruma to tell him he forgot to mention after he fed his ring his magic Iruma can now use magic and to not use it until he had some time to adjust the output, just seconds after Iruma jokingly uses magic on his plant.
  • Running Gag:
    • Eiko keeps missing her chance to talk to Iruma.
    • Every time Kalego has to explain something, he is forced to use a very cutesy video that explains the rules. This usually ends with him destroying said screen in frustration after its done.
    • Opera will use anything as an excuse to have Iruma summon Kalego in his fluffy familiar form, especially if it's in a group event where Kalego isn't around.
    • The question of who between Iruma and Lied is the "younger brother". After the Harvest Festival, both acknowledge that they've come to see the other as something like a brother. Problem is, they both see each other as the younger brother. From then on, now and then both will find moments to refer to the other as the younger brother. Even when it's revealed that Lied's birthday is a month before Iruma's, definitively making Iruma the younger of the two, Iruma will still refer to Lied as his younger brother to strangers.
  • Sailor Fuku: The girls' uniform at Bablys resembles the typical Japanese sailor uniform. Most female students wear this uniform, though Ameri and Elizabetta wear Custom Uniforms that lack the sailor collar.
  • Scissors Cuts Rock: During the Walter Park arc, Professor Balam beats a red fire-breathing dragon by summoning a plant dragon. He notes that the red dragon should normally be advantaged, but Balam's mana is high enough for his plant dragon to overcome the red one.
  • Secret Test of Character:
    • It is suggested that Kalego put Iruma and Azz on separate teams during the Cannon Ball Execution game to see if Azz would throw the game to help Iruma. Kalego explicitly states this after the game in the anime.
    • The steps for finding the Legend Leaf in the Harvest Festival were made deliberately confusing, convoluted and overall crazy, especially for demons, for the exact purpose of finding a demon that is almost nothing like any other demon, somebody that is relentlessly determined to accomplish what they desire, selflessly helpful towards others, and capable of taking something absurd and turning it into something fun, as they would make the perfect candidate to succeed the previous Demon King.
    • It is revealed that the 13th Dinner is one, as the 13 Crowns are able to tell what kind of demon one is by the way they eat.
  • Serious Business:
    • The Three Greats take great pride in proving they have the best grandchild. Later becomes a Plot Point when they decide to make the next Demon King one of their grandsons.
    • "The Cult of Numeral 2" is exactly what its name suggests: a bunch of demons obsessed with the number "2", to the point of worshipping it like a god. At first it sounds like a myth or rumor, with even the people that know about it doubting it's real, but later it's revealed to truly exist, with Ocho being a member. He was actually manipulating Orobas into becoming a false number 1 so that he could be a genuine number 2.
    • Education in the Underworld is treated as extremely important. A demon's status is determined by their rank, which is earned via their schooling. You can be denied entry to a high-class restaurant because your rank is too low, i.e. because you didn't do well enough in school. Each of the Three Greats, the de-facto rulers of the Underworld, are officially only the headmasters of their respective schools and the teachers of at least Babyls give every indication they are willing to die for their students.
  • Sexy Villains, Chaste Heroes:
    • The very concept of the "Wicked Phase", which acts as a Superpowered Evil Side for all demons, basically exemplifies this, as each time it has actually shown up, the character experiencing it has acted in a much sexier and more alluring way than they do normally, since part of it involves losing all inhibitions, such as how Alice gains a sense of Interplay of Sex and Violence that really amplifies his erotic aura. But none of the demons can compare in sexiness to Wicked Phase Iruma, who entered one thanks to mental alteration by Ali-san, as the "evil" effect of the phase at worst makes him a Jerk with a Heart of Gold with such a suave charm and forceful-yet-gentle attitude that he causes every girl and some boys to swoon. The sexiness of the phase is amplified tenfold when Iruma becomes Wicked Phase Irumi, as his elegant black short-hemmed dress, thigh-high boots, arm-length gloves, and hair extensions combined with a deliberately commanding attitude take Attractive Bent-Gender to the extreme, making him so stunningly beautiful and sexy that almost every demon of both genders are practically creaming themselves.
    • After he properly revealed his true evil self, Kiriwo frequently acts incredibly alluring and exhibits a constant erotic aura when being his true self. He especially piles on the eroticism when his Nightmare Fetishist mindset is in full drive, blushing, panting, and drooling in ways that even a demon in their Wicked Phase would find too lewd.
  • Shared Family Quirks: Demonic families tend to share a great many quirks between them. Most of the Valac family are hyperactive, loud, and will burst into spontaneous choreography. The Andro family are thieves. The Azazel family have tall, red-headed people and a serious-intimidating aura. The Purson family are all shy and keep from the spotlight, but are also motormouthes when they get talking. Even people adopted into a family can have similar quirks to their new family, such as Sabnock' adoptive uncle Baal of the Thirteen Crowns being just as relentlessly and stubbornly determined about his beliefs and goals as both Sabnock and his father.
  • She Is the King:
    • While no female demon has been named Demon King, yet, no one implies the title will change if Levi of the Greats or any female member of the Thirteen Crowns ascends one day.
    • The winner of the Harvest Festival is called the "Young King," or "Young Kings" in the event of a tie. This is done irregardless of the gender of the winner. Ameri, having won the year before Iruma participates, is called "Young King."
  • Shipper on Deck:
    • Almost every single person that so much as suspects Iruma and Ameri as having feelings for each other end up being very supportive of the relationship... with the notable exceptions of her father and Clara.
    • Later on, Iruma shows some support for Azz/Clara, as he teases the latter boy that he thinks they're hanging out way more than friends do usually.
  • Ship Tease:
    • It is heavily hinted that Clara and Ameri have a crush on Iruma. Confirmed with Ameri as of Chapter 52.
    • The teacher Momonoki appears to have a crush on Kalego.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Clara's slippers, Connor and Murph, are named after Connor and Murphy MacManus from The Boondock Saints.
    • In Chapter 147, Sullivan has Iruma wear so many coats he can't move, which is straight out of A Christmas Story.
    • In Season 2 Episode 2 of the anime, Henri Azazel blatantly invokes The Ring during a videochat with Ameri after she enflares his overprotective attitude about Iruma, changing his video background to a forest with a well in the middle, turning the video feed grainy and glitchy, then trying to physically prevent Ameri from seeing Iruma by performing a Television Portal.
    • In Season 2 Episode 9, there's a moment where a scene occurs with a setting very similar to the famous questionnaire room from Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?.
    • During the "girls talk" segment of Season 2 Episode 11, one of the scenes features the Monster Clown masks from PAYDAY: The Heist in the background.
  • Show Within a Show: The "forbidden text" Ameri has turns out to be a Shoujo manga called Hatsukoi Memory, which tells the story of a high school girl named Rin Hoshino and her growing relationship with the New Transfer Student Kakeru Aozora since their first encounter. Iruma used to be an assistant for the manga's author.
  • A Simple Plan: Iruma's primary goal during the beginning of the story is simply to just do whatever he can to avoid standing out (so he isn't found out to be a human and eaten.) Every single thing he does to remain incognito tends to blow up in his face and make him more and more famous among his fellow classmates at the school. By the time of the Walter Park arc, he has all but given up on trying to blend in (which is just as well, since the arc ends with him and his classmates becoming famous across the Demon World for stopping a terrorist plot), not that he actively starts looking for fame by any means.
  • Social Services Does Not Exist:
    • The whole plot of the series would've turn out very differently if someone had discovered the abuse and cruelty Iruma was forced to endure under his parents.
    • Averted later on. Eventually Iruma gets noticed by Henri Azazel, the leader of the Netherworld's border patrol, who plans on sending Iruma back to the human world if he's being abused or coerced into staying. So basically, social services do exist, but only in the place we call hell.
  • The Sociopath: While it's revealed that most of the demons in the setting suffer a Lack of Empathy towards other demons that they don't care about personally, there are a few character who exhibit cases of genuine sociopathy.
    • Amy Kirio appears to be a weak demon boy who befriends Iruma and his friends but is in truth a manipulative sadomasochist who got off on despair whether it be others or his own. He conspired with Baal to trap the student body with his barrier magic the ultimate plan being to detonate a bomb to kill all the students and in that ensuing chaos, the students' families would be driven back to their primal states. Amy explains to Iruma that he became aware of his sadomasochism when he was sent to a rehabilitation school due to his low magical abilities and it was there he befriended a girl who loaned him her prized earring. When he accidentally destroyed it when trying to retrieve it from two bullies, he got a nosebleed from the sight of his former friend's grieving face.
    • Baal, one of the Thirteen Crowns of the Netherworld who had grown bored with the current state of the Netherworld and masterminded the attempted bombing of the demon school so that it would send the Netherworld back to its days of chaos.
    • Despite being humans, Iruma's parents were literally incapable of feeling any sense of compassion towards others or remorse about their horrible actions, especially when it involved Iruma himself. Hell, Iruma admits that them selling him to a literal demon was very much in-character for them.
  • Someone Else's Problem: This is the general state of demons. They are caring and protective of their friends and family, but if they don't know someone or have no connection to them, a demon won't make a move to help them.
  • Something Else Also Rises: When Kirio learns Iruma is a human he crouches on the ground while his wings slowly start coming out. When he first considers eating Iruma Kirio's wings fully "perk up." The fact that Kirio is drooling during all of this just makes things more obvious.
  • Speaking Simlish: Implied. Demons cannot understand human speech and vice versa, and until Sullivan applied a translation spell onto him all Iruma hears is gibberish. Everybody speaks perfect Japanese for the sake of Translation Convention, however, up to and including using standard lingo and slangs.
  • Spit Take: In chapter 186, Azz spits out the tea he's drinking when he sees Iruma as Irumi participating in the Evidol Games.
  • Stating the Simple Solution:
    • Azz and Clara are upset they have no idea where Iruma just randomly leaves (To go read a manga to Ameri). Sabro just tells them to follow him and find out. Azz is against it but Clara immediately heads off to do just that.
    • When Iruma and Lied are trying to figure out how to grow the Legendary Leaf, Nafra simply waters it. This one is justified in a short bit as Nafra holds the special watering can that is needed to make the Legendary Leaf bloom. She is a plant by the Student Council to judge a demon's kindness and worth of receiving this help in making the plant bloom.
    • Towards the end of the Heartbreaker's arc, the final two teachers to enter the fray are Kalego and Balam. Iruma is panicking over how to deal with them only for Jazz to point out a very simple way to deal with Kalego: Summon him. As Iruma's familiar Kalego can not hurt him is obliged to obey him. This isn't a perfect solution as Kalego is only restricted from attacking Iruma while summoned, everyone else is fair game. Iruma gets around this by clinging to Kalego so he can't attack anyone else without also attacking Iruma, and he's forced to concede. He also says he won't help the students, but it takes him out of the battle nevertheless.
  • Stationary Wings: While demon wings can expand out or be pulled in when they are ground, a majority of demons fly around with their wings but never move them. this is justified because they are likely using magic to fly in addition to the wings.
  • Status Quo Is God: Generally averted as many characters grow and develop from their experiences and life choices, but in regards to Kalego being Iruma's familiar, a year after the initial contract was made, Kalego makes a very big effort to keep Iruma from renewing the contract as he is required to do to keep Kalego under contract. Iruma largely goes along with this, but many of his classmates plus Opera do their best to force the contract renewal before time is up. At Balam's insistence, Iruma and Kalego have a heart to heart about the matter and Kalego reveals that he in fact has no familiar (Cerberus, which was believed to be a familiar, is actually his bloodline power) which is enough to convince Iruma that he can get by without a familiar as powerful as Kalego, so he lets the contract time out and prepares to summon a new familiar. However, as Iruma is still a human (which means that he summons demons with a summoning contract, not demonic animals, and can resummon the same demon where as a demon would never resummon the same demonic animal) and Kalego doesn't know this and is the closest demon to Iruma during the summoning, Kalego gets contracted as Iruma's familiar for another year to Kalego's despair.
  • The Stinger:
    • While most of the episodes have a version of this in the form of the SuKiMa shorts, episode 23, the Season 1 finale, ends on a genuine stinger, with it showing Iruma waking up in his "wicked phase", giving us a Sequel Hook for what's to come in Season 2.
    • The Season 2 finale yet again breaks from the SuKiMa skits to give a Sequel Hook for Season 3, in this case setting up the frantic situation where all of the Misfit Class must reach rank Dalet (4) before their second year, or else they're getting booted from Royal One. The close-out frame in particular gives a glimpse of what's to come for the Iruma Trio, showing their future badassery upgrades.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Whether it is facial structure, or hairstyle, or clothing choices, many of the main families shown in the series have almost identical appearances. Ameri and her father, Sabro and his sister, and Eiko and her brother all look like gender-swapped versions of the other.
  • Succubi and Incubi: In this story, succubi and incubi aren't a demon subspecies, but instead they're any demons that have embraced a lifestyle of sexiness and allure to entrance others under their thrall. That said, part of becoming a sex demon involves learning magic to increase their skills at sexiness, including "Sexy Scope" to gauge the sexiness of others and a wide variety of Charm Person spells, so only demons with either the aptitude or determination to become super-sexy are able to become sex demons.
  • Superpowered Evil Side: All demons have a natural inclination towards acting evil, quite literally having it as a biological compulsion they're born with. Due to the peaceful and restrained attitudes of current demon society, everyone tries their best to repress this impulse, but as a consequence all that evil builds up inside them while very much wanting an outlet. Normally they use various forms of entertainment like evidols to clear away their demonic desires, but if they can't do so the build-up will eventually burst in what is referrred to as a "wicked phase", granting the demon a temporary boost in strength and magic until they burn off the evilness, but at the cost of turning into The Berserker, indiscriminately lashing out with that power, to the point of trying to kill other demons to sate their enhanced Blood Lust. The one exception to this is Iruma, who as a human has zero natural compulsion for evil and is such an All-Loving Hero he doesn't even get a desire to hurt people, just becoming a Jerk with a Heart of Gold when Ali-san magical induces a wicked phase onto him. Additionally, Shichirou Balam found a way to quite literally make a wicked phase into an "evil side", figuring out how to train people into gaining the ability to willingly enter said phase, at the cost of losing control and needing somebody to snap them out of it.
  • Suplex Finisher: Due to a spell that makes it impossible for Iruma to fall down for one day, he accidentally defeats Asmodeus with a perfect German Suplex. This is how he ended up becoming friends with Azz.
  • Sure, Let's Go with That: During the Harvest Festival, Iruma and Lied spend the entire first day simply acclimating themselves to the forest and eating food without getting any points. The next day, Lied assumes that this was part of Iruma's plan to be well rested to go after the legendary plant that gives the most points. Iruma actually just got too caught up in making food to remember to actually go find stuff for points, so after a moment of shock he just says that yes, that was his plan all along.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome:
    • Many wonder how Sullivan has a grandson when he doesn't even have children. Surely enough, one of the bad guys manages to tip off the Demon Border Patrol and get Sullivan arrested. While Sullivan manages to walk away, Ameri's father is still aware of the fact that Sullivan may have kidnapped Iruma and is perfectly willing to help Iruma if he wants it.
    • The Student Council is not just as or more powerful than the teachers, and gets treated the same as any other club. For example, if their ability to perform their duties falters they can be suspended just like the rest of them.
    • Sullivan grants Iruma the ability to read the language of demons, but Iruma still lacks the understanding of concepts and terms that others grew up in, such as discussing potential yield of a magical attack while in battle.
  • Sympathy for the Devil: Despite Amy nearly blowing up the school, a rather deplorable action, Iruma still thinks the guy deserves credit for the clubs victory with their firework project. Though in this case it's probably less about sympathy and more about acknowledging and stating facts and giving credit where credit is due.
  • Tactical Withdrawal: During the Heartbreaker Competiton,
    • Team Valac decides to run for it when facing Stolas. After inhibiting her music playing with a pepper attack, they run for it. However, they don't get far as Stolas is able to recover and is pissed about her make-up being ruined.
    • Team Iruma encounters Sheeda first and the young teacher completely dominates the fight and chastises Iruma's lack of will in going for a kill shot. It is only because Garson Vine makes a poison-covered hole and covers Iruma and Chima in the antidote does Sheeda break off pursuit.
    • After a group of Misfits and their Fledgling partners successfully stop Sullivan from joining the competition, they start to celebrate, not immediately recognizing that the competition is still on-going and the teachers quickly launch a counterattack. Teams Elizabetta, Sabnock, Kerori, Asmodeus, and Iruma all make a run for it but not without casualties. Hearts are popped and Team Kamui is eliminated from the competition.
  • Take Off Your Clothes: Ameri once ordered Iruma to do this. It takes a second for Ameri to realize what she said and she clarifies she doesn't want him in his Student Council Uniform when he reads her the next chapter of her Shoujo manga.
  • Tempting Fate:
    • Henri Azazel, eager for his daughter to gain some working experience and avoid time with Iruma, asks she join the security team for the Evidol Games. When she goes to check out a complaint of a commotion in one room it's Iruma's room where he and his team are getting ready for the competition and they need a fourth demon for their team and whom they can trust.
    • During the Evidol Arc, Iruma leaves home asking his grandfather and Opera to not watch the big event on tv. Once Iruma leaves, both demons immediately sit down in front of the tv and turn it on. Opera and Sullivan then lampshade this action.
Sullivan: (Iruma departs) Well then ... (jump cut to the living room) guess we'll have to watch the games now.
Opera: Demons can't resist interesting things, after all.
  • Tertiary Sexual Characteristics: Most demons have the same tail shape that's only differentiated between genders (heart-shaped tips for female demons and arrowhead-shaped tips for male demons), although there are a few notable exceptions (e.g. Professor Suzy's sprout-like tail and the Ronove family having scorpion-style tails).
  • That Was Not a Dream:
    • The first chapter Iruma believes that him being sold to a demon and then becoming his grandson was just a very weird dream. It isn't until he wakes up the next day in his new comfortable bed and surroundings that he realizes it wasn't.
    • At the end of the Evidol Games Arc, Iruma wakes up thinking the entire arc was a very weird dream. He is horrified to find out it actually happened.
  • They're Called "Personal Issues" for a Reason:
    • In chapter 141, after the Harvest Festival is over and visting Azz's home, Iruma realizes how close he is to Azz and Clara but dreads what might happen if he tells them his deepest secret, that he is human. Amaryllis Asmodeus, Azz's mother and member of the 13 Crowns, only overheard part of Iruma's monologue, that he has some secret he is keeping from her son. Amaryllis is fine with that and helps Iruma understand there can be things kept from one's close allies and even lovers. These secrets aren't a mark against the depth of the relationship and are perfectly fine.
    • Iruma repeats this idea to Azz sometime after this, as Azz recalls in chapter 240, where Azz confesses to Iruma that fire magic isn't Azz's bloodline power but is hesitant to tell even Iruma what it truly is. Iruma is perfectly okay with Azz keeping his secret to himself and it doesn't affect how he feels about Azz.
  • This Cannot Be!: Balam has this reaction upon realizing Atori is a spider demon. This is a type of demon Balam thought not to even exist.
  • This Is Gonna Suck:
    • Kalego has this reaction when Sullivan instructs him to visit the parents of his students. Turns into a Screw This, I'm Outta Here when he goes to Clara's house.
    • Kalego has this moment when Balam puts on the Evil Idol Games before the concert Kalego wants to watch comes on. On the screen he sees Iruma dressed as Irumi. Kalego wants to change the channel but Balam won't allow it.
    • Picero has this reaction in the Heartbreaker Competition when Balam is the one to find his team. Despite a valiant effort, his team was taken out in a few minutes tops.
  • Time for Plan B: Durring the Heartbreaker Competition, Allocer references a contingency plan to his and Jazz's deception gambit where Jazz fakes putting his team inside a small safe and will hold the line against interrogation, and for the final minutes of the event Allocer would put three of the first years inside the belly of the fourth member (his bloodline magic allows him this power), just in case things don't go as planned. This is all moot, howerver, as an evil demon attacks and overwhelms all five, only for them to be saved by the teachers pursuing the villain.
  • Tower of Babel: The 13 Dinner takes place at a large tower named Babel.
  • Translator Microbes: Sullivan uses his magic to allow Iruma to read and understand the demon language. That said if there is no culturally appropriate term for Iruma's words, his friends will understand the word phonetically but not what he means, such as calling them his "friends."
  • Training from Hell:
    • Iruma does this with Opera to prepare himself for the Cannonball Execution Game. Opera refuses to hold back their strength when throwing at Iruma in order to get the boy to stop dodging and actually catch the ball.
    • Ameri puts her Student Council members, including Iruma when he temprarily joins, through this everyday as a morning exercise. This involves attaching winged ball-and-chains that bite onto the members and if the runner is too slow, the ball will bite them.
    • The Misfit Class goes through this in preparation for the Harvest Festival. Each seen tutor devises a specific ciriculum for their students which is extremely taxing, demeaning, frustrating, and/or painful. These include forced servitude to either the tutor or a business the tutor owes debts to, trapped in watery prisons, long enduring combat sessions, forced to play all their games and beat them in six days and do so without rest, trapped in cages with summoned beasts to learn to control them, and to constantly draw attention and turn heads towards themselves. By two weeks in, they are exhausted and some terrified of their tutors. Then once the students clear the first lesson, the tutor increases the difficulty.
    • After the events of the Heartbreaker Competition, Opera joins the teaching staff of Babyls to become a practical magic trainer with another new hire for the Misfit Class. Kalego, knowing what sort of demon Opera can be, pities them before Opera's first lesson: they must attend a tea party before the tea gets cold. The lavish selection of food is atop a hundreds-foot tall pillar and the Misfits cannot use their familiars, bloodline magic, or wings to ascend. They can only use simple magic or their own bodies. He omits to tell them until they reach the midway point that the remaining section of wall is called the six-second wall. The magic they cast will last only that long before the structure reverts to the flat wall. So if they want to climb it, they must keep casting the transform spell on the wall and climb up. Then once they have succeeded in climbing the wall, Opera does reward them with a lavish tea party. Opera finishes the kind moment with telling the Misfits they will need to descend the wall once done in the same fashion.
  • Two-Teacher School: Averted. Not only are there 37 teachers at the school, excluding faculty, but we actually see the majority of them performing their personal subjects instead of only a few being shown teaching and the rest acting as Living Props. Even just in the case of the Misfit Class, Kalego as their homeroom teacher doesn't act as an omnidisciplinary instructor, with everybody having various other classes with teachers who specialize in different subjects, just like actual real-life high-school.
  • Underestimating Badassery: During the Heartbreaker Competition, Ameri describes the teacher faction as a whole does this to the Misfits for the S.O.S. subarc. The teachers trying to unleash Sullivan don't fully appreciate several of the teams growth and development, as well as their cooperation and teamwork. This allows the Misfits to stall the teachers long enough to deactivate the system which would allow Principal Sullivan to enter the match. It gives the Misfits a small victory against the powerful teachers who are otherwise taking out the Misfits quickly.
  • Uniqueness Decay: In Balam's picture book, it's explained that demons with bloodline magic are rare, despite virtually every named demon having one. Where this comes to a head is the Heartbreaker arc, where over two dozen students are introduced with each having a unique bloodline ability, even if you account for the ones who share an ability with a previously introduced family member (i.e., Chima and Sylvia).
  • The Un-Reveal:
    • The performances of classes D and E for the Music Festival were never shown. This is possibly justified on Class D's part as they are more relevant in the spinoff manga.
    • Azz, despite being unmatched, doesn't reveal his true bloodline magic in Chapter 240, instead using blue flame magic, which in itself is a rare form of magic based on ancient papers written by the previous Demon King.
  • Utility Magic: Magic is part and parcel of demon life. They will use it to clean up refuse, either gathering it or burning it, clearing fields for gardening, lighting and heating their homes, and even to steal. Some have bloodline magic seeing where the target's valuables are, others might shrink products to pocket them and sneak off with them.
  • Visual Pun: in the anime OP, there's a couple of shots of Azz, Iruma and Clara dancing against a disco background - if you look at their hands, they all have every finger curled in except their pinky and forefinger, which is often called devil's horns!
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Azz tends to tolerate Clara because Iruma likes her rather than because he himself does. The two of them are polar opposites and often bicker over Clara's antics. The narration notes that, after they bonded by trying to cook for Iruma, their number of conflicts increase.
  • We Are Experiencing Technical Difficulties: During the Heartbreaker Competition, there are dozens of cameras watching and transmitting events for people to see in live feed. When the third act starts up and the commentators note that there are just five teams left, when they switch to Jazz's location, they find him bound and crucified with all manner of torture implements about. They quickly cut feed to that camera and a stunned Baraki and Ameri are nearly speechless as well.
    Baraki: .........Um-.. That is-
Ameri: That is not something we are allowed to transmit to you. Please wait.
  • We Need a Distraction:
    • The first step in Iruma's plan to obtain teacher's signatures to enter the Royal One involves him being the distraction. He and Jazz approach Kalego and Iruma enrages him by saying he plans to turn Kalego into his familiar form and order him to give his signature. This is enough for Kalego to not notice Jazz using his Pit magic and steal Kalego's notebook to bribe Mononoki Morax for hers.
    • Jazz does this again in the Heartbreaker Competition when he is the distraction. He appears to have put his Fledglings into a powerful, secure safe and only he knows the code to open it. However, he learns after buying the thing it's a fake safe and decides to still use it but not have his Fledglings inside. They are being moved to a safer location while he sits out openly next to the safe daring any teacher to try and break him to make him talk.
  • Wham Line:
    • "SO IT'S YOU" spoken by a recording of the Missing Demon King to Iruma.
    • Kalego confesses to Iruma in 218 "I don't have a familiar."
    • Ifrit to Asmodeus: "I mean "fire" isn't your bloodline magic, after all. Right, Asmodeus-kun?"
    • Chapter 319 has Kalego asking Balam "Is Iruma a human?" Balam gives no answer, but Kalego takes the plausible deniability as "yes."
  • Wham Shot: In chapter 251, when looking at the remaining Misfits in the Heartbreaker Competition, the cameras come upon Jazz bound to a crucifix and all manner of torture devices around him. It's so shocking, the Broadcast Battler cuts the feed and shows a picture saying "Stay Tuned."
  • What Is This Thing You Call "Love"?:
    • On a more platonic level, the Demon World has no word for the concept of "friendship". Early in the story, Iruma explains the concept to Azz, and then much later on Azz explains it to the rest of the class, though more, uh, dramatically. When Iruma clears up any misconceptions created by Azz's explaination, the class all realize the term is appropriate.
    • Garp has the goal of making 100 allies. But we see that really he just wants friends, but as all other demons, he doesn't have the proper word for it, so "ally" is the closest he finds.
  • Willfully Weak: What Azz thinks Iruma is doing where he prefers to walk to school rather than fly.
  • Working the Same Case: Clara is looking for a guy who hasn't returned a game to her Battler, Azz is also looking for a guy who borrowed personality changing chemicals from his Battler. It turns out it's the same guy.
  • World of Technicolor Hair: The hair colors of demons span all across the rainbow, with pink and green being as common as blonde and ginger. It interestingly makes the blue-haired Iruma blend right in, despite being a regular human.
  • Worth It: Both Sabnock and Iruma were disqualified from the race from going out of bounds, but Sabnock states it was worth it for the reaction he got from the teacher when they returned on the back of the Leader of Cutthroat Valley.
  • Worthy Opponent: Sabnock thinks of this towards Iruma after he saved him from the Leader of Cutthroat Valley.
  • Year Inside, Hour Outside: It's implied that time in the demon world moves at a much faster rate than in the mundane. At least in the manga, Ameri's stash of "Forbidden Books" was noted to be a hand-me-down from prior generations of her lineage, while Iruma claims it's only been a few years old as he was one of the assistants of the author. It should be noted however that it appears to be a very long series judging by the book shelf space it takes up in volumesnote  and going off of similar long manga series it's not a surprise if it has been running for close to 2 decades.
