Just because you're unclothed doesn't mean you're not dangerous.

"What do I wear to bed? Chanel No. 5."

While pajamas or underwear are the most commonly depicted garments worn for sleep, it's also not uncommon to depict a person wearing nothing to bed at all. While this is Truth in Television, media often treat this as shocking or exotic, with the character who does it being portrayed as an oddball for doing so, and they're often comically opinionated about the superiority of their sleeping habit if questioned, often mentioning health or comfort benefits. In Real Life, somewhere around 25% of all adults sleep this way normally.

Sometimes used to illustrate the setting, such as a depiction of a period before sleepwear became mainstream, or character, as in showing a person prefers not to wear clothes at home at all or has other traits to them that make sleepwear either unnecessary or in some way a hindrance. Sometimes the characters simply don't have any clothes to spare, and sleeping without clothes is a sign of a dire situation or even poverty, similar to a Bankruptcy Barrel. And sometimes they sleep nude because they live in a very warm environment and would find extra insulation (in the form of pajamas) to be unnecessary.

Naturally, it also serves as a form of Fanservice, with the notion that nude sleepers are tied to seductive or sex-positive characters, with The Tease oversharing that she does it just to titillate others. Fan Disservice is also just as likely, with the common stereotype that old, ugly, or gross people also enjoy sleeping naked. As such nude sleepers are commonly either portrayed as very attractive or very repulsive.

A lot of awkwardness may happen if a character sleeps this way have to share a bed but There Is Only One Bed. A Shameless Fanservice Girl or someone with No Sense of Personal Space may not mind, but the other person surely will. Expect a Bedmate Reveal if someone who sleeps naked sneaks into another character's bed, intentionally or accidentally, with one of them usually freaking out and jumping to conclusions. A Modesty Bedsheet (or a woman lying on her front) can be employed if censorship is necessary.

When someone is woken up abruptly while in this state, it can also be an example of Naked People Are Funny or an Inconvenient Summons. Can sometimes lead to Dining in the Buff if someone chooses to get a Midnight Snack or make breakfast without getting dressed, or a Full-Frontal Assault if attacked in their sleep. May involve Clingy Sleepers, especially the nude sleeper.

Compare Home Nudist and Going Commando.

  • In the Argos cataloge, the bed linen models sleep in the nude.
  • In an ad campaign for the Coco Chanel perfume "Chanel No. 5", Marilyn Monroe claimed that she only wore the perfume to bed, obviously to take advantage of the titillating factor associated with sleeping naked. The campaign was wildly successful, and even popularized the notion of sleeping naked being seen as exotic and sexy in media.

    Anime & Manga
  • Ayakashi Triangle: Shadow Mei sleeps naked, with her Modesty Bedsheet not even covering most of her. After some delinquents wander into the abandoned hotel she was living in, Mei spends a good while avoiding them covered in only the sheet, even though she could instantly change into her usual outfit.
  • Both versions of Bubblegum Crisis show Sylia Stingray sleeping this way. The Modesty Bedsheet does little to not bare the original incarnation's legs and shoulders. The 2040 incarnation is only shown doing this once, but it's waking up which allows her to show the same amount of skin nonetheless.
  • Queen Alsheyra Almonise is seen sleeping in the buff in Episode 19 of the Chrome Shelled Regios anime after a Catapult Nightmare. The audience is treated to a Sideboob, but the Modesty Bedsheet preserves her lower body.
  • Dancougar Nova: Fashion model Aoi is shown to sleep naked in episode 2 when she wakes up in a Catapult Nightmare, with a Modesty Bedsheet covering all important bits. Riruri calls in her Video Phone moments later, and finds it odd that Aoi disabled the video feed, with the ensuing dialogue being a clear reference to the Marilyn Monroe "Chanel No. 5" ad campaign.
Aoi: I sleep in a way I don't like others to see. Especially men.
Riruri: Like wearing Chanel No. 5 or 6?
    Aoi: Non. It's an original.
  • In the director's cut of episode 2 of the Date A Live anime, Origami Tobiichi is shown sleeping naked.
  • Dragon Ball: In an early episode, Bulma is forced to do this when she puts all her clothes in the wash and has nothing to wear to bed. Yamcha gets an eyeful when he mistakes her form under her blanket for the Dragon Balls and lifts the blanket. The next day, it turns out Oolong forgot to turn the washing machine on, so the only outfit available for her is a Playboy Bunny outfit.
  • The Duke Of Death And His Maid: The Duke is shocked to learn that Alice sleeps naked and doesn't bother to get dressed when answering her door, instead teasing him with her body for the umpteenth time.

If anyone walks in on her, she doesn't bother to cover herself and will get up and start talking to them. When she makes a Heel–Face Turn and joins the heroes, they manage to convince her to wear a long shirt to bed. When she finds out, Erika finds it "cool and mature", but when she tries it herself she gets a cold.

  • In 4★Town 4★Real, Aaron T. is revealed to not own pyjamas as he does this.
  • Fushigi Yuugi: Happened to lead character Miaka Yuuki twice. First was when she and her Love Interest Tamahome wake up in Taiitsukun's domain. The divine entity and her charges had the lovers' clothes cleaned up after arriving from their brief battle with the Seiryuu team. When Tamahome wakes Miaka up, she's understandably aggressive. The second was after Miaka wakes up after her Bungled Suicide by drowning, which leaves Hptohori flustered.
  • The manga version of Gate shows that Delilah strips naked before going to sleep. She doesn't do this in the anime.
  • Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex: An episode in 2nd GIG has Major Kusanagi sleep in only her panties (camera angles and Scenery Censor conceal her breasts). For bonus points, she's sharing the bed with a teenage boy, and offers to take his virginity when he asks her if one can still have sex as a full body-replacement Cyborg (he turns her down). It's strongly implied that she mostly only bothers with clothes for social or practical reasons: as her cyborg body began life as a common civilian model from several years ago, there are probably thousands of women with her exact external body.
  • Gundam:
  • Handyman Saitou in Another World: Raelza is often shown sleeping naked, which is the only time she willingly removes her armor. She will still suffer a Naked Freak-Out if someone walks in on her.

Not that he minds, though everyone else does. This gag has been largely abandoned (though Italy's sleeping habits remain the same). The anime edited things so that Italy sleeps in his underwear, which kind of missed the point of the joke, though this tendency of his was still referenced once in the dub.
  • Played for Laughs during a Class Trip to Kyoto in Chapter 119 of Hidamari Sketch, Nakayama is waking up everyone and freaks out when she pulls off Miyako's blanket to find out she sleeps in the nude. Miyako just lazily sits up, showing no discomfort in front of the shocked Nakayama.

  • In Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni: Kai, Miyo gets a Harassing Phone Call from Okonogi in the middle of the night and we see her bare back as she sits up to answer and the sheet slides down, showing she sleeps in the buff. The scene seems to be purely for Fanservice.

Akari finds it bold, Hinata thinks it's an easy way to get a cold and Sophie just tells her to Please Put Some Clothes On.

  • The title character of Space Adventure Cobra; we don't see him below the waist when he's suddenly woken up one morning, but his lack of a shirt coupled with the fact that he uses his blanket as a Modesty Bedsheet to run out and scold his Robot Buddy for waking him early on a Sunday makes it pretty obvious that he was naked.
  • Strike Witches: Gertrud Barkhorn is repeatedly shown sleeping in the nude despite sharing her room with fellow Karlsland witch Erica Hartmann.

Cut to a Sexy Discretion Shot on Leonora's shadow as she dresses, leading to the housekeeper complimenting Leonora on the beautiful woman she's grown into.

  • NCIS: Played for Laughs twice in "Minimum Security" in separate incidents:
    • Tony DiNozzo is revealed to sleep in the nude in an embarrassing and comedic incident where Gibbs and Kate rush into his room with guns drawn upon hearing him scream, only to find a naked DiNozzo yelling at an iguana that snuck in. He only notices his state of undress after Kate gets an eyeful and teasingly winks at him, causing him to cover himself with a chair.
    • Later in the episode, Ducky and Abby are talking about perfumes, and he mentions his dislike for Chanel No. 5. because the Marilyn Monroe ad convinced his mom to always sleep naked, much to his discomfort.
      Ducky: I don't see Chanel No. 5.
Abby: Does anyone wear that anymore?
      Ducky: My mother does.
      Abby: Really.
Ducky: Ever since Marilyn Monroe confessed that Chanel No. 5 was all she wore to bed.
      Abby: So... does your mother...
Ducky: Unfortunately, yes. Makes for terribly awkward slumber parties.
  • One Tree Hill: "Almost Everything I Wish I'd Said the Last Time I Saw You" shows that Alex sleeps naked, even when she has to share a bed with Josh, with her casually tossing her bra at him. Due to him being gay, he's only mildly annoyed by it.
  • The Parkers: Nikki, Kim and some other sorority pledges are tasked to sneak into Professor Ogilvy's place at night and take a picture of him in his underwear. Upon glancing under the covers, Nikki reports that he isn't wearing any. They just take a picture of him in bed, Modesty Bedsheet still in place, to prove that they were there.
  • Mentioned in, of all things, Pee-wee's Playhouse. When Pee-Wee invites all his friends for a sleepover at the Playhouse, Cowboy Curtis (young Laurence Fishburne!) shyly admits to Pee-Wee that he doesn't have any pajamas because "I sleep in the nude." Pee-Wee uses his weekly wish from Jambi the Genie to give Curtis some western-themed jammies just for the occasion.

  • Schitt's Creek: Mayor Roland Schitt sleeps naked every night, something the horrified Moira finds out at the Municipalities Conference.

  • Smallville: In "Crusade", Lana Lang (Kristin Kreuk) wakes up naked in her bed after touching a symbol on a tomb and passing out, with a Modesty Bedsheet barely covering her waist.
  • Stargate Atlantis: In "Duet", a female marine ends up Sharing a Body with McKay's by accident and she takes control of it without his permission several times, with one of things she does is going to sleep in the nude.
  • Played for Laughs in Storm Chasers. Byron has to share a hotel room with Sean at one point due to lack of funds, and is deeply reluctant because There Is Only One Bed. After Sean is out of earshot, he explains to the cameraman, "Sean sleeps naked." Thankfully Sean puts a division pillow between them on the bed.
  • Supernatural: In "Red Sky at Morning", Sam questions how Bela can do such horrible things for money.
Sam: How do you sleep at night?
Bela: In silk sheets, rolling naked in money.
  • One episode of That '70s Show makes a Running Gag of it. Red is forced to wake up Eric in the middle of the night and is disgusted when he answers the door wrapped in nothing but a blanket. (Eric later admits to his friends that yeah, he does this for the exact reason that they suspect.) The episode ends with Red loudly waking him up again and saying that he's going to keep doing this until Eric starts wearing clothes to bed.

    Music Videos
  • The music video for Amber's "Sexual (Li Da Di)" implies this. It shows the singer taking all her clothes off and then laying in her bed covering herself with Modesty Bedsheet before deciding to seduce her neighbor who she was sharing flirty looks with in the opening scene.
  • The music video for Roxette's "Stars" opens with vocalist Marie Fredriksson waking up and covering herself with Modesty Bedsheet before getting dressed by her maids in the following scene.

  • The Bible: Implied in the Song of Songs 5:3 when the Shulamite hears the Beloved knocking on her door late at night and she is thinking, "I have taken off my robe — how can I put it back on?"

    Video Games
  • In Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony, Gonta Gokuhara, who was Raised by Wolves, tells Kaede that he learned to sleep naked in the forest because he can't sleep comfortably in clothes. But since Gonta is obsessed with being a gentleman, he pledges not to do this anymore after Kaede says it's not very gentlemanly.
  • The opening cutscene of Dead or Alive: Xtreme Beach Volleyball introduces Helena sleeping naked in her bed.
  • Fate/Grand Order:
    • In the "Dead Heat Summer Race!/Death Jail Summer Escape" event, seductress Medb claims she only wears "Gabrielle No. 5" to bed, which is a Shout-Out to Marilyn Monroe famous quote of wearing "five droplets of Chanel No. 5" and "nothing else" to bed.
    • The second opening of "Cosmos in the Lostbelt" saga shows Mash Kyrielight/Shielder sleeping in the buff before awakening, a sheet preserving her modesty only being held up by her large chest. It can also be inferred that, since any other sleepwear she's been shown to wear are hospital gowns, Mash might sleep in bed nude normally.
  • Angela of Trials of Mana is strongly hinted to sleep in the nude when you visit the inn. In fact if she's not your main character, it's possible to stumble across her at the inn at Jigrad, where she'll call you a pervert if you disturb her when playing as any of the male characters.
  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild: According to her gossipy employee, Isha the Gerudo jeweler sleeps wearing nothing but accessories.

    Webcomics

    Western Animation
  • Bob's Burgers: In "Three Girls and a Little Wharfy", Gene attempts to go to school naked because it's Pajama Day at school and he slept without wearing any clothing the previous night. Naturally, his parents veto the idea because they know that there's no way the school or the public will allow him to be naked and make him wear his regular set of pajamas.
  • Joked about in one episode of Camp Lazlo, where Edward needed to share a bedroll with one of the other campers. He initially got comfortable in Lazlo's bedroll and thought that he was wearing comfy pajamas. Cue the next shot when he's hugging his knees in a corner like a traumatized child.
  • Disenchantment: King Zøg's diminutive royal cape-bearers Vip and Vap sleep in the buff.
  • My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic:
    • Played for laughs in the episode "The Super Speedy Cider Squeezy 6000". Rainbow Dash barges into Fluttershy's bedroom and pulls off her bed-covers, and Fluttershy blushes and covers herself up as though she had been caught sleeping nude — in spite of the fact that as ponies they don't usually wear clothes at all.
    • In "Uncommon Bond", Starlight wakes up her friend Sunburst in the middle of the night and he quickly covers himself up with blankets and shyly asks Starlight to leave the room for a bit so he can get dressed. This one's somehow funnier in that Sunburst does wear clothes... but his "clothes" are mostly just a single cape and nothing else (though the cape does cover up most of his body).
  • Rocko's Modern Life: Implied in one episode, where Heffer and Filburt get a video of Rocko half-asleep and wandering downstairs for a glass of milk in the nude. Or wearing a censor bar, depending on the joke.
  • In early seasons of The Simpsons, Marge Simpson was often shown nude in bed. Later seasons tend to put her in a nightgown.
    • Homer Simpson does this in "The Wizard of Evergreen Terrace" in an effort to emulate Thomas Edison.

Man: [from the sidewalk] Do us a favor. Invent yourself some underpants!
  • Spongebob Squarepants: Implied in the episode "Plankton!". When the mind-controlled SpongeBob breaks into Squidward Tentacle's house, the perpetually pantsless octopus isn't wearing a shirt and his lower body is covered with the blanket. This is further supported by commentary for the episode revealing that Squidward was originally supposed to appear naked in one scene. Squidward wears pyjamas in pretty much every other episode where he's shown sleeping.
  • In Star vs. the Forces of Evil, the episode "Jannanigans" opens with Tom sleeping over at Marco's house and floating over the bed. We don't see him below the waist, but the reactions from Star and Marco (who are looking up at him) implies that this trope may be in effect.
  • Steven Universe: After accidentally possessing Lars' body while they were both asleep, Steven gets out of bed and finds that Lars went to sleep naked, with a questionable magazine draped over his face. He quickly huddles into a corner and grabs some clothes off the floor to keep himself from seeing Lars' privates.
  • In the Total Drama Island episode "If You Can't Take the Heat...," a subplot is that the other Killer Bass boys systematically steal all of Harold's clothes to punish him for leaving his dirty laundry around the cabin. This eventually leads to him sleeping naked (except, oddly, for shoes and socks). The others prank him by moving his bed outside onto the dock as he sleeps, only for him to wake up while everyone else is enjoying the lake.
  • Trese: Nova Aurora was seen dropping her Modesty Towel after coming out of her bath without even dressing the moment she reaches her bed.
  • In the Xiaolin Chronicles epsiode "Chase Lays An Egg" Badass Adorable Ping Pong reveals that he sleeps in the "Fantastique!" by flashing Kimiko at the breakfast to her disgust. Fortunately, Ping Pong is just being Innocently Insensitive instead of perverted.

    Real Life
  • Truth in Television: studies have shown there are health benefits to sleeping nude, which is one of the reasons even people who don't fall into the category of Home Nudist sometimes choose to. And if it's really hot, it might be too uncomfortable to sleep clothed.
  • The Royal Marines actually require you to sleep naked—specifically, you walk from the showers to your bed wearing nothing but sandals, and are locked in at light's out. The point is to keep people from going AWOL, which is that much harder if you have to sneak out in the buff.

"Adult" Pajamas

Erica is researching what kind of sleepwear everyone wears because she wants pajamas that feel "adult", and is shocked to find out Angelica doesn't wear anything to bed at all. Erica concludes that's the most "adult" way of sleeping of all.

How well does it match the trope?
