My God, You Are Serious! (trope)
Well, if you've gotta ask, lady, then he probably is.

Leela: Doesn't it bother you even a little to be taking advantage of your girlfriend's trust?
Bender: [laughs, then stops] Oh, wait, you're serious. Let me laugh even harder.
[he does just that]

The inversion of I Was Just Joking. A character says something that sounds insane or absurd. Another character either laughs or snarks You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me! or perhaps And I'm the Queen of Sheba — then realizes with alarm that the other character wasn't joking.

Expect to hear this phrase every time a Deadpan Snarker is confronted with the Zany Scheme of the week. Badasses who say things like "I'll just have to burst in and take them all out, then!" can usually expect this reaction, too.

Compare Mood Whiplash, Not Hyperbole, And You Thought It Was a Game, Joke and Receive. Contrast "Not Making This Up" Disclaimer, where the authors feel that a statement about the real world sounds so absurd that it has to be confirmed as true.

  • Ah! My Goddess: After the Heaven's Gate ends its strike it's still unstable at least for a while, and Peorth has been urgently recalled but isn't precise enough to get through while it's unstable can't get easily. Then she finds herself inside a siege mortar that Skuld just happened to have around, and Peorth realizes that not only Keiichi and the Norns are serious, they're going to do it even without her consent.
  • In Bleach, as Unohana escorts Ichigo through the Garganta so that he can fight Aizen, she takes over creating the path they are to walk on when Ichigo creates a shoddy one. After seeing how much nicer Unohana's path looks, Ichigo states that the difference in Reiatsu between them is enough to make him lose confidence, which prompts Unohana to reply that their Reiatsu is on the same level; his control is just sloppy even though he's fully healed. When Ichigo retorts that he could do better if he was at full strength, Unohana dismisses it as Ichigo making excuses and pretending he's not at 100%. Then Ichigo starts explaining how his shihakusho becomes a reflection of his Reiatsu when in Bankai (which he's still using at that moment) and how Orihime only healed his physical injuries because restoring his Reiatsu would've taken her much longer and Ichigo was in a hurry to help Rukia and the others; at this point Unohana drops her smile as she slowly realizes that Ichigo's explanation makes too much sense and that, with only the right sleeve of his shihakusho left, he really is only barely at half power. And he's still at Captain level with just that. Realizing just how monstrously powerful Ichigo is when at full strength, Unohana tells Ichigo to create the path himself while she follows him from behind and focuses on restoring his Reiatsu; if he's going to fight Aizen, then nothing less than his best may suffice.
  • In Dragon Ball when Freeza says he's only been using about half his full power against Goku. Goku gives a nervous chuckle and says that even for a bluff, that's too big of a claim. Seeing no alternative, Conis screams at the top of her lungs that she rejects Enel as her god, which sends everyone running as they expect Enel to smite Conis for her blasphemy. When he doesn't smite her, they realize to their horror that Enel is indeed planning to kill everyone, as that's the only reason why he would not bother to smite a single blasphemer on the spot — exactly as Conis expected.
    • When Luffy bluntly blurts out to Ivankov that the Revolutionary Dragon (Ivankov's boss and long-time comrade) is his father, Ivankov takes a few seconds before processing what Luffy just said, and immediately starts yelling that Luffy can't possibly be serious (since he didn't even know Dragon had a son in the first place). When Luffy elaborates that he doesn't even know what Dragon looks like and that he's from the East Blue, however, Ivankov immediately realizes that Luffy must be telling the truth as Dragon always used to stare longingly towards the east over the years that Ivankov knew him, and more importantly, Luffy has already demonstrated that his will to live and ability to impact the world are far too much like Dragon's.
  • Powerpuff Girls Z: The very existence of the girls was thought to be a joke, as it was first promoted on April Fools' Day.

Sunset reveals to her and the others that a Cutie Mark is a physical manifestation of a pony's talents, so getting it taken away was like having a crippling injury blocking you from being able to enjoy the thing you love the most (like cooking, singing, or running) ever again.
    • Sci-Twi is incredulous to the idea of Sunset being evil, or Princess Twilight being meek like herself.

When Naruto brings it up with Teuchi, he explains that there's a difference between running a ramen stand and catering for a wedding. If you reject the first two payments or ask more questions than needed (which is purposely taking the harder path) the Pillar's third price is Fall-from-Grace's life (assuming she's in the room). If you agree to this, Grace asks you if you're serious; if you say yes, she disappears, and never comes back. The fourth payment is Annah's life (again, assuming she's actually in the room) and again, if you agree to this, Annah asks if you're serious. If you say yes, she becomes enraged and attacks you, fighting to the death. (The Pillar does not accept this as payment; accepting either of these payments slides the Nameless One's alignment towards evil.)
