Meet My Good Friends Lefty and Righty

When people name their guns, or swords, or other conventional weapons, we have I Call It "Vera". This trope is when people name their "weapons." Or in plain English, their arms. This also sometimes happens with fists or any other body part that can be used in a fight. Usually occurs in the context of a threat, an actual fight, or just standing in front of a mirror admiring their physique (kissing optional).

    Anime & Manga 
  • Crossed over with I Call It "Vera" in Aldnoah.Zero, where Countess Femieanne has named her Kataphrakt's Rocket Fists - all six of them.
  • Yowamushi Pedal: Izumida, a rival biker from Hakone, has named his left pectorals Frank and Andy - after two famous cyclists. Later on in the story, he also introduces his back muscle, Fabian. According to him, his muscles all have distinct personalities and are constantly giving him advice as he races.

  • In the Gravity Falls fanfic Anyway, I've Been There, Mabel tells Dipper that if any bully starts giving him trouble, "I'll show him a couple things I learned from Grunkle Stan! Thing one, and thing two," holding up her fists for emphasis.
  • In the Weird Sisters series, Helga has "Old Betsy" and "The Five Avengers", like in canon. When she become Multiarmed And Dangerous, she calls her two extra fists "Punchy McPunchface" and "The Enforcer".

    Film — Animated 
  • Bambi II: Ronno calls his newly budding antlers "Stab" and "Jab" (or "The Boys" when used together).
  • Cars 3: While training Lightning McQueen, Cruz Ramirez encourages him to name his wheels. McQueen finds it ridiculous, and half-heartedly calls them "Righty", "Lefty", "Backy" and "Backy, Jr."
  • Shark Tale: When Oscar is bragging about how he "killed" a shark.
    Oscar: So I say, "You see this guy?" [points to a bicep] "Well, he has a brother that lives right over here..." [points at other bicep] "...and I think it's time for a little family reunion!"
  • In Shrek the Third, Shrek jokes that if Arty doesn't agree to become king, he'll introduce him to his good friends, Persuasion and Reason. He holds up one fist at a time - "Here's Persuasion, and here's Reason".

    Film — Live-Action 
  • The Abyss: One of the heroes (Blowfish) calls his right fist "The Hammer". He's a gigantic ex-Marine and boxing champion, and uses the Hammer to knock out the psychotic marine Coffey in a single (surprise) blow.
  • Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy has Ron Burgundy threaten a cameo-appearance Jack Black to fisticuffs featuring lefty and righty, or "Jack Johnson and Tom O'Leary."
  • In the documentary Dawg Fight about the backyard boxing scene in Miami, one fighter nicknamed his fists "chicken and fries," stating that his opponents supply the ketchup.
  • In The Rundown, Travis has named his left and right legs "Thunder and Lightning". Unfortunately, he's more good at getting his ass kicked than kicking ass.
  • In Spy:
    Susan: You wanna deal with Cagney and fuckin' Lacey?! (raises fists) Cagney is going in your mouth and Lacey going up your ass and they're going to meet in the fucking middle and play your heart like a fucking accordion!
  • There's a scene in The Tooth Fairy where Dwayne Johnson's character Derek threatens to introduce Stephen Merchant's character Tracy to "the Hammer Brothers: Sledge and Jack!"

    Literature 
  • June in Armadillo Fists calls the armadillos she has instead of fists "Jocko" and "Judy." Justified since they're living animals grafted onto her body, so they're half body parts, half pets.
  • In Zombies and Shit, Mr. T has taken to calling his robotic fists "Brick" and "Mortar." Much to his annoyance, another character points out the Fridge Logic that since his fists are now literally made of steel, they're in fact harder than those names imply.

  • 30 Rock, Jack's big Boston Irish family has a brawl:
    Jack Donaghy: [takes off jacket] I think of all the things that I've been holding inside me that I've wanted to say to you, but [puts up fists] I'm gonna let St. Patrick and St. Michael do my talking for me!
    Jimmy Donaghy: [puts up fists] You'll have to get through Tip O'Neill and Bobby Sands first!
    Eddie Donaghy: You call those fist names? [puts up fists] Say hello to Bono and Sandra Day O'Connor!
    Jack Donaghy: Those are the stupidest fist names I've ever heard.
  • When Buster gets a giant hand prosthetic in season four of Arrested Development, he refers to it as "Thunder" and his regular hand as "Light Drizzle". He explains that it's because Light Drizzle will just annoy you, while Thunder will eff you up.
  • In The A-Team episode "The Taxicab Wars", Murdock annoys B.A. by introducing himself as Dr. Vern, and his assistent Socky. B.A. says "This is my talking fist. His name is Knock-Out. Would you like to hear Knock-Out speak?"
  • Used hilariously during the Comedy Central Roast Of Pamela Anderson. After it's all over, she steps on stage to thank the people for coming, then very bluntly draws attention to her kinda see-through shirt. After apologizing, she then states that she couldn't have been there without her two best friends, "Poncho and Lefty," points at her breasts, then enthusiastically bounced them around.
  • In The Daily Show, Jon Stewart apparently calls his fists Simon and Garfunkel.
  • Fuller House: Guest star Macy Gray names her fists "Heaven and Hell."
  • In an episode of How I Met Your Mother Ted tells Robin that he's going to visit Sandy, a co-worker who harassed her, and that Sandy will listen to common sense and reasonable discourse. Robin asks if that's what Ted named his fists, and Ted replies that they're his feet. He's a kicker.
  • In the Psych episode "Shawn and the Real Girl", fellow reality dating show contestant Mario refers to his fists as "Frederico" and "Pepe".

  • Inverted in the Rocky pinball machine; it features two pairs of flippers, named "Left Jab", "Right Hook", "Left Hook", and "Right Jab".

  • Santino Marella calls his biceps "Pasquale and Francesco".
  • CM Punk once called his fists "Regular and Unleaded."

  • BrĂ¼tal Legend: A Bouncer nicknamed "Mittens" threatens to use the only two mooks he knows can get the job done: Fear (left fist) and Pain (Right fist).
  • Don't Starve: In the multiplayer version, if someone playing as Maxwell has killed other player characters, Wilson will give this quote when examining him: "I'll show you Logic and Reason... those're my fists!"
  • Mega Man X: Command Mission: Absolute Zero fights with his claws rather than weapons like everybody else. Hence, the panel where you choose which weapons to attack with names them Killer Left and Brutal Right.
  • Super Paper Mario: When Mr. L mocks Count Bleck's other flunkies in a cutscene, an angry O'Chunks offers to introduce him to "Fist Jr. an' his wee pal, Slappie!"
  • Team Fortress 2: The Heavy's fists are his default melee weapon and can be named like all other weapons allowing this trope to be invoked by the players.

  • Strong Bad Email: In an Easter Egg in the "road trip", Bubs combines this with a reference to a famous Los Angeles law firm:
    Coach Z: Whaddya mean, I'm the green Bubs? If anything, you're the orange Coach Z!
    Bubs: The next person to call me "the orange Coach Z" is gonna get a free consultation with my friends Jacoby (balls up his left fist) and Meyers! (balls up his right fist)

  • The Adventures of Puss in Boots: When Dulcinea gets Super-Strength, she calls her biceps "my new best friends, Lupe and Mariana".
  • Batman: The Brave and the Bold has it as one of (if not his only) Batman's quirks: a strange obsession with calling his fists "the hammers of justice".
  • A Charlie Brown Christmas: A variant appears where Lucy says she has five good reasons for Linus to stop dragging his blanket around on stage during the Christmas pageant and counts off her fingers as she curls them into a fist.
  • Chowder: Parodied in "The Moldy Touch", where Mung threatens to introduce Funjl to his friends — i.e., his fists — "Mr. Fisty and his wife, Elaine".
  • Clone High: Confucius has names for each ab in his six-pack: Dominic, Roman, Hobbs, Shaw, Letty Ortiz, and Leon. They seem to actually be sentient as well, as they cry and disappear after Harriet dumps Confucius to date Toussaint.
  • The Fairly OddParents!: When Crocker becomes a giant cheese man, he refers to his fists as Colby and Jack, then explains that they're cheese puns.

    • Bender in the initial finale affectionately names his hands Grabby and Squeezey.
    • "Assie Come Home": Bender's arms are named Gropey and Cheaty.
    • "Into the Wild Green Yonder": Bender refers to his footcups as Stompy and Smashy when he offers to kill a leech.
  • Gravity Falls: Upon receiving his stolen hands back from the Hand Witch, Grunkle Stan says to his hands: "Shaky! Scratchy! I've missed you old rascals!"

  • In the My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic episode "The Mysterious Mare-Do-Well", Applejack calls her back legs "Bucky MacGillicuddy and Kicks McGee". In the episode "Applebuck Season" she even calls McGee out on being lazy when she can't drop all the apples off one tree with one kick (she is running out of stamina with her sleep deprivation).
  • King Julien on The Penguins of Madagascar once referred to his fists as "Righty" and "The Other Righty" (Julien's kind of a moron).
  • The Powerpuff Girls (1998): In "The Powerpuff Girls Rule!!!", Buttercup says that the best way to rule the world is watching everything people say and do, and that anyone who doesn't like it can take it up with "Punchy McGee" and "Fisty O'Flannigan".
  • In Recess, Spinelli threatens a couple times to introduce students to her good friend, "Madam Fist." In The Movie, Recess: School's Out, Vince remarks that it seems to be her answer to everything.
  • Rick and Morty: When Morty's arm becomes sentient with "muscle memory", he calls it 'Armothy'.
  • Subverted in a Robot Chicken sketch. Composite Santa has the real Santa's reindeer tied up. One of them says "you'll never get away with this", leading Composite Santa to hold up his fist and say he's got five good reasons for him to shut up. He then pulls out a revolver and shoots him five times.
  • The Simpsons:
    • Groundskeeper Willie refers to his fists as "The Lads".
    • In "I, D'oh-bot":
      Pimple Faced Kid: Are you here with your children, sir?
      Moe: Uh, yeah, my two kids. (holds up fists) "Screw", and "You". (kisses both affectionately)
    • In "The Man in the Blue Flannel Pants," Dolph says Bart will hear from his sisters and raises his fists.
      Jimbo: Your fists are sisters?
      Dolph: Yeah, "Poke-ahontas" and "Sock-a-jaw-ea".
      Bart: Nice save.
  • In the Squidbillies episode "Limbitless" Early slices off one of his tentacles breaking into a vending machine. When Granny says "Landed on a little sick, are we?" Early says "I'd butter you with a sick beatdown if I still had Ol' Smacky! Smacky was my bitch-whuppin' arm!"
  • In Transformers: Robots in Disguise (2015), the Decepticon Underbite named his fists "Thundercruncher" and "Boltsmasher".
  • In Wander over Yonder Sylvia refers to her fists as "Lady Haymaker and the Duchess of Whaling" in "The Fancy Party" and "My Fair Hatey".
