This index lists tropes about, or related to, the Hippie Movement from The '60s and 70's.
These Tropes are like, far out, man:
- Blaming "The Man": The Man is the conservative ruling class of corporations and big government. The Man is the arch-nemesis of all Hippies, man.
- Bourgeois Bohemian: They may look like hippies, they may act and dress like hippies, but they certainly don't live like hippies. These upscale urban couples may eat goulash and homemade organic yogurt, but they live in posh condos with fancy kitchens.
- Capitalism Is Bad: The Hippie movement eschewed the trappings of the modern rat-race business world in order to pursue peace, love, and harmony with nature. Some practiced small-scale capitalism by running small businesses, coming into serious conflict with groups like the Diggers who wanted to eliminate money entirely and to establish a trade and barter system.
- Commune: Much of the younger generation would leave home and congregate on the land to grow their own food. There were both urban and rural communes, some more successful than others, some existing to this day.
- Cult: Some hippie communes took too many drugs and took a turn into the fanatical. Just ask the Manson Family and look up "acid fascism".
- Dirty Communists" Hippies' political views tended to lean decidedly to the progressive Left. Some visited communist countries. There were even hippies within the Soviet Union, although they were heavily monitored for their anti-authoritarian stances.
- Disco Dan: The tie-dye look (which is actually an early The '70s post-hippie style) is very dated, and keeping the colors after it goes out of fashion can make you a real square.
- Draft Dodging: Hippies were famously anti-war, a lot of their protests being in active defiance against The Vietnam War and the draft board — a perceived death sentence at that time for young working- or middle-class men, especially if Black or Hispanic.
- Drinking the Kool-Aid: A stock phrase for going all in on a movement, originating in Ken Kesey's use of Kool-Aid spiked with LSD to initiate people into the counterculture. Later acquired darker connotations due to Jim Jones' use of cyanide-laced FlavorAid in the mass murder-suicide of the Jonestown cult.
- Everybody Must Get Stoned: Hippie culture had a lot of overlap with drug culture. Many hippie gatherings were notorious for spiking the beverages with psychoactive substances, or finding some other way for everybody to imbibe pot or LSD.
- Erudite Stoner: An intellectual hippie who reads poetry and Eastern philosophy while smoking cannabis.
- Folk Music: Saw a resurgence of popularity thanks to the hippies, with the strong appeal of acoustic Three Chords and the Truth songs about protesting the war and the Man.
- Free-Love Future: Free Love with many partners was a big part of many hippies' utopian beliefs.
- The Generation Gap: Hippies vs. their square, rigid Parents, who typically work for big business and want to lock their offspring into the marriage-mortgage lifestyle in the suburbs. Or, later in life, the opposite situation: Hippie Parents raising budding squares who grow embarrassed and discontent with their peculiar ways.
- Granola Girl: All-natural, idealistic, free-spirited hippie chick.
- G-Rated Stoner: Showing hippies acting as though they're under the influence without showing any actual drug use.
- Higher Understanding Through Drugs: Hippies often indulge in mind-altering substances that give them expansive visions and insights.
- Hippie Jesus: Some would say that Jesus Christ would have been a hippie if he came in the 20th century. He has the long-haired, sandal-wearing look and the "peace and love" attitude of one.
- Hippie Name: Hippie names in fiction tend to be weird, hallucinogenic and esoteric.
- Hippie Parents: Some practitioners of free-love never moved on from the sandals and VW bus lifestyle after their love bore fruit.
- Hippie Teacher: This teacher is easy-going, soft-spoken and will most-likely teach drama or poetry and inspire their students to fight "the Man", often through nonviolent resistance

- Hippie Van: All hippies have a psychedelic mural-emblazoned 1970s Volkswagen Bus for driving to festivals and 420 hangouts.
- Horror Hippies: When drug-addled Hippies who've lived in the woods alone too long are portrayed as Ax-Crazy and not to be trusted.
- Junkie Prophet: Hippies often conflate the mind-expanding effects of LSD with enlightenment and cosmic awareness. They think it keeps their minds limber.
- Like Is, Like, a Comma: Stereotypical hippie lingo is, like, totally far out, man.
- Love Freak: Make Love, Not War. Love is selfless. Love is free. Love is love, love, love, love!
- Mushroom Samba: As mentioned, the hippie movement was known to be fond of psychedelic drugs.
- Nature Lover: Getting "back to nature" was a big theme of the Hippie / Flower Children movement. Many felt The Call to Agriculture, felt Ludd Was Right and Handmade Is Better, and established rural Communes, relearning rural skills hoping to create a new Arcadia, or at least a healthy place for Hippie Parents to raise the "children of the children".
- New-Age Retro Hippie: The Theme Park Version of Flower Children.
- Psychedelic Rock: A genre influenced by hippie culture.
- Round Hippie Shades: These shades are often worn by hippies.
- Sex, Drugs, and Rock & Roll: All the fixings for a non-parent approved party breakfast.
- The Stoner: Many of the stereotypes attributed to weed smokers can be traced back to the idea of the Hippie.
- Stoners Are Funny: The hippie stoner stereotype Played for Laughs.
- Straw Vegetarian: A lot of vegetarian stereotypes are often indistinguishable with hippie stereotypes.
- Verbal Tic: "Like", "man", "groovy" and "far out".
- Watch It Stoned: Hippies are the original stoner. Or at least the Trope Codifier.
- Waving Signs Around: Hippies are likely to get involved in social causes and protests, holding a sign in one hand and a joint in the other.
- Wild Hair: Hippies were noted for sporting long unkempt hair and beards.
