An original Video Game or Pinball machine described through a work of narrative fiction.

If described in detail, the game may avert Pac Man Fever. A particularly violent game of Ultra Super Death Gore Fest Chainsawer 3000, or the wildly popular series of prostitute-murdering Murder Simulators, will not be so well described, given Hollywood Game Design. The characters may play in their own Personal Arcade. Or an ordinary, everyday moment becomes a Sudden Videogame Moment.

The game may be part of a Cyberspace environment. The player may end up Inside a Computer System, Trapped in TV Land, experiencing The Game Come to Life, Trapped in Another World in The Most Dangerous Video Game.

In the isekai genre, the setting is often a Standard Fantasy Setting with RPG Elements as part of a virtual reality Role-Playing Game.

Games are prone to defictionalization, even when not made into an officially licensed game. The game can be a Game Within a Game. Is it truly fictional then? Depends on who you ask.

  • A commercial for Alpha-Bits cereal in the 80s had the cereal box turn into a game called Roast That Ghost. The objective was for the player to run through a Haunted House while pursued by a Silly Spook, and find and eat the letters G, H, O, S, and T. A similar commercial had a pursuing pig with the goal to spell B-I-G P-I-G.
  • A Coca-Cola "Coke Side of Life" ad shows a GTA-clone.
  • A Coke Zero "It's not your fault" ad shows a WoW-clone.
  • In a Domino's Pizza ad, The Noid is playing a Pizza Delivery Game while riding on a laser cannon-shaped seat, firing at a screen filled with boxes of ordinary pizza. But when the screen is filled with Domino's Pizza, each box is impervious to the blast of the laser beam weapon, because Domino's Pizza delivers more than all of the ordinary pizzas combined.
  • Ads for Gamefly include fictional games like Bean Farmer Extreme, Let's Count Sand, Let's Wait in Line, and Nada III.
  • A Honeycomb cereal ad shows a Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks style game played on a handheld. The player can be a Johnny Cage lookalike or the Honeycomb cereal mascot, or appear in the game.
  • Spotted on an IKEA display: BeatBOX 0.1 games Call Your Mutti: Say "Oops, I'm Sorry", Grand-ma's Auto, and The Pimps.
  • In a Liberty Mutual commercial, Liberty Mutual: The Video Game appears as an arcade cabinet.
  • From 1987: This McDonald's commercial has Grimace playing Cheeseburger Chase, where the objective is for Hamburgler to run through the maze; with a little incentive.
  • PlayStation 2: In 2078, the PlayStation 9 spheroid opens to send electronic spores to tap directly into the adrenal gland. Features improved retinal scanning, a mind control system, and telepathic personal music.
  • A commercial for Energizer batteries has a fictional video game called Beauty And The Beast: The Ultimate Adventure, wherein a princess is being chased by a dragon through Mario-like environments, until the Energizer Bunny interrupts the commercial by appearing from one of the doors and shrinks the dragon with one of his drumsticks.
  • An Australian RACV insurance ad featured the PlayStation game Zombie Attack!
  • This trailer for Sonic Mania Plus features a game called Finger GunZ, which a salesman tries to sell to a customer, in a homage to this commercial for Sonic the Hedgehog. The trailer ruthlessly mocks triple A FPSes, with the salesman advertising lootboxes as a selling point. The Finger GunZ game was actually a real prototype made specifically for the trailer.

  • Apocalypse is a Yuri manga series revolving mainly about a fictional MMORPG.
  • Btooom! is about the combat game Btooom! by Tyrannos Japan, available on the DXBOX 720.
  • In Corrector Yui, there is the VR world of ComNet.
  • In Cyber Dorothy, there is the VR game Yellow Brick Road.
  • The World is a popular MMORPG from the .hack franchise.
  • On the DNA2 OST, track 8, there is the console RPG-esque Dragon Fantasy IV.
  • Dragon Ball Z episode 252 has the Game Poy handheld console with a Snake clone.
  • In Dusk Howler, there is the VR game Trikia.
  • EG Maker is about an eroge game company, Momii Design Ltd. One game stars a girl named Rora, and another game stars a girl wearing suspenders.
  • Eroge no Taiyou is about an eroge developer. One of the games is the emotionally moving Magi-Con 2.
  • In EXEcutional, there is the online game Neo Universe.
  • Firestarter is a handheld game featured in FLCL, about an arsonist pleasing the Lord of Black Flames.
  • Good Night World is a manga about a virtual world.
  • In Haru & Natsu Chapter 21, "Let's Cosplay!", there is a Dating Sim starring the Magical Girl Ashley, available on the Play Nation console.
  • In Hunter × Hunter, there is Greed Island on the Joystation Console.
  • In Imori 201, Chapter 27, "Let's PARTY", there is the MMORPG Swallowtails Online.
  • JoJo's Bizarre Adventure has these as the central focus in the Terrence D'Arby fight - "F-MEGA" and "Oh! That's a Baseball!"
  • Jinsei Tsun da kara MMO ni Hamatu te mo ii yo ne? (I got stuck in real life, so it's okay to get addicted to an MMO, right?) is about an MMO.
  • In the Kagaku Na Yatsura manga, Creature Hunter on the PSP appears to be Monster Hunter mixed with modern weaponry.
  • Magic of Stella is about the development of self-published video games, so there're several of them. To begin with, the title refers to the first of the games the protagonist Tamaki was involved in its development.
  • In MegaMan NT Warrior, the video game company Gabgom (AyanoTech in the dub), run by Yai Ayanokoji's family, makes the VR RPG Hero of Maxima and the RPG Strawberry Princess.
  • Ne.to.ge features an MMORPG where character actions can be felt.
  • The Show Within a Show Sensei and Ninomiya-kun of Minami-ke was turned into a game with many Unexpected Gameplay Changes. It went from Fighting to Platform to RPG to Resident Evil knockoff between levels. The cast was baffled.
  • In Neon Genesis Evangelion, a Seca Saturn console appears in episode 6 and 23, and in episode 23 the console is played on a Sega TV. Games include PoYo PoYo II, Winning Fighter, SATURN2, and a game ending in -リアル, featuring a schoolgirl with long red hair.
  • New Game!, after all, is a Work Com about a game studio.
  • In one episode of Outlaw Star, Aisha is seen playing a handheld game called Heartbreaker, which appears to be some sort of combination of Fighting Game and Dating Sim.
    • Oh and Kanade's combo, press the A Button and instantly win.
  • Pecola: In "Robbie to the Rescue", Robbie plays a video game called Sir Lancehop vs. Max von Villainator. Pecola has Robo-Pecola play the game as well, which causes him to act like the game's villain, Max von Villainator; to stop him, Pecola has Robbie take on the role of Sir Lancehop.
  • In RPG Comic, there is the VR MMORPG ESPERA.
  • In Sailor Moon, The Game Center Crown hosts a series of arcade cabinets including the blank arcade cabinet voiced by Artemis pretending to be the mysterious "Game Machine", called Central Control in the dub.
    • The game center has the VR fighting game Cyber Girl Warrior Lurga, appearing in volume 1, chapter 6 of the manga Codename: Sailor V. While the Super Famicom version doesn't use the same technology as the arcade version, a special adapter will allow playing the arcade version on the Super Famicom. The game is part of an energy draining plot by the Dark Agency, and Sailor V goes inside the game to fight Cyber Girl Warrior Lurga directly.
    • Minako plays a game called Lovely Fight at the game center in volume 1, chapter 2 of Codename: Sailor V, and claims to know about the myth of Artemis from a video game.
    • The game center has the Sailor V sidescrolling game, a favorite of Usagi's. Angel Studios' Sailor Moon R for the Game Boy includes a defictionalization as a minigame segment based on the sidescroller).
    • In Sailor Moon R episode 4 a VR laser shooting game is ambushed by the Cardian Hell Ant.
    • Usagi, Minako, and the mysterious Mugen Academy student Haruka play God Driving, a racing game at the game center in episode 3 of Sailor Moon S.
  • PHANTOMa from Serial Experiments Lain is a virtual reality dungeon crawler action game.
  • In Shitsurakuen, there is Exaclan, a VR game.
  • Shoujo Kesshou Kokoro Jikaru is about a virtual world.
  • Sky World is about the MMORPG Sky World.
  • In Summer Wars, there is the VR virtual world OZ.
  • In Toaru Ossan no VRMMO Katsudouki (A Certain Middle-Aged Man's VRMMO Activity Log), there is the VRMMO One More Free Life Online.
  • In 12 Beast, Eita plays a strategy RPG on a PSP-style handheld.
  • In Under City, there are online games including the survival game Under City.
  • In The World God Only Knows, there are several Dating Sim games on the PFP, including Crayon – Sora no Art and Yokkyun, and the horror game Saiontourou, or Favor of the Western Lantern .
  • Yggdrasil is about the online game Yggdrasil.
  • In Yo-kai Watch, there is Yolo Watch.
  • In the Yu-Gi-Oh! manga, there is Virtual VS, a virtual arcade fighting game. One fighter is Bruce Lee Expy Bruce Ryu, who uses a move called "One Inch Punch".
  • In Yu-Gi-Oh! 5Ds, there is a Riding Duel game where the player has Cup Ramen Man as an opponent; Jeagar knew a special code that unlocked a Duel Puzzle, that, when solved, granted access to confidential files.
  • In Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs Chapter 79, "Super Strategy! The Cursed Game", the computer RPG Desire Quest is a game created by an amateur game maker who died before the game was released to the public. Desiring players, the game appeared on download sites, entrapping players in the game world, whereby one must win to leave the game.
  • Yuujou Kakin Kalman Gain is about the mobile game Karman Gain.
  • YuYu Hakusho has Goblin City. Gamemaster allows us to learn more about it.
  • Zero No Shiniki is a manga about gaming.

    Asian Animation 
  • Mechamato: Episode 9 starts with Amato and Deep playing a video game called Zilator, then Pian shows them a Zilator game he found in his dad's old collection. Deep makes a big deal about it since Pian had the rare Zilator 1 while he and Amato were playing Zilator 14.

    Comic Books 
  • In The Amazing Spider-Man #688-691, No Turning Back, Curt Connors plays a 3D holographic puzzle game similar to Tetris on Horizon Labs' equipment, inspiring his Fridge Logic for a new Lizard formula.
  • In Batman Inc. vol. 2 #1, there is a Bed Bug arcade cabinet next to a Polybius cabinet.
  • In Donald Duck Adventures, there is the Game Toy.
  • In G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero, Slip-Stream plays the arcade game Mig Waxer, in issue #54, "Launch Base".
  • Lightspeed Entertainment, owned by Booster Gold and the Blue Beetle Ted Kord, is an R&D firm focusing on the production and distribution of interactive multimedia entertainment and information, first mentioned in Extreme Justice #6.
  • The Playtendo game console is mentioned in several 1990s DC Comics titles, including JLA: World Without Grown-Ups #1.
  • In Jughead and Friends #15, there is the game Bone Breaker IV.
  • In The Mighty Thor #328, an arcade game called Megatak is being promoted; unfortunately, an industrial thief named Gregory Nettles tried to steal the prototype software at the expo where it was being promoted. Apparently, he wasn't much of a thief; his attempt got himself electrocuted, then somehow sucked into the machine, and turned into a virtual being representing the game's protagonist, with the ability to bring the monsters in the game to life, which he used to send on a rampage. When Thor showed up, Megatak got lucky, taking Thor by surprise and knocking him down; needless to say, when Thor got up again, he floored the guy with one blow, and his powers faded. After spending a few months as "a mercenary in a dumb costume", he was killed by Scourge.
  • Runaways starts with a Marvel themed PC MMORPG with The Invisible Woman, Captain America, Daredevil and The Hulk as playable characters. By Volume two it was a Plot Device All Along.

  • In The Tick, there is the Game Guy handheld video game system.
  • The Transformers (Marvel): Multi-World is a computer game; Optimus Prime and Megatron battle in the virtual world of this game, ending with Prime's apparent death.
  • Aboard starship Entreprise-2601 in Pouvoirpoint, on several occasions we see the characters playing a first person perspective video game in black and green wireframe, called Death Race in non-Euclidean environment (visually inspired by 1979 Commodore PET game Ratrun). To defeat the boss Sly Lozenge, the player must find the Power Polyhedron, which activates Hyperbolic Crystals. This raises the specter of the Rectangle of the Mountain, who grants the player Symplectic Invincibility... They also play an unnamed 8-bit fighting game, with a red fighter against a blue fighter. Lots of Button Mashing seems to be involved.
  • Green Arrow: In the 2011 comics, the most popular games console is the Q-Box, a product of Oliver Queen's tech company Q-Core.

    Comic Strips 
  • In FoxTrot, there are the games Duke Quakem, Mortal Karnage, Nice City, Primal Instinct, Super Earthworm Mario Country 3, World of Warquest, the Mobile Phone Game Candy™Farm™Dungeon™, and the Jupiter 64 Gamestation.
  • In Hsu and Chan, the Tanaka Bros. Game Development company makes knockoff games like Bad Milage 2000 and Pocket Morons.
  • World of Hackcraft is an MMORPG from Knights of the Dinner Table, based on the tabletop role-playing game Hack Master
  • In Pooch Café, there is the arcade game Alien Attack.
  • Eyez Of Zeye from Luann, a game developed by Elwood about a typical female scantily-clad space hero; eventually made into a movie that became a Franchise Killer due to Tiffany's lousy acting.

    Films — Animation 
  • In Futurama: Bender's Big Score, an attack on an alien planet is displayed on the video game system the aliens are playing.
  • In Futurama: The Beast With A Billion Backs, there are the arcade games Coin Vacuum, Exlaxian, Extreme Flosser, Honkey Kong, Ms. Marple Madness, Normal Kombat, Shovel Command, and a handheld version of Pong with a paddle as tall as the height of the screen.
  • In Toy Story, arcade games at the Pizza Planet include Annihilator, Black Hole, Do Unto Others, Kabookey!, Planet Killer, and Scooter Attack. In Buzz Lightyear: Mission Logs, there is the game Astroblaster.
  • In Toy Story 2, the Buzz Lightyear game Buzz Lightyear: Attack on Zurg looked very cinematic for a Super NES game, compared to other prerendered games on the platform, such as the Donkey Kong Country series. The video game of Toy Story 3 has a defictionalized level of the game.
  • In Monster House, there are the games Trigger and Thou Art Dead. The latter was playable for the DVD release.
  • Wreck-It Ralph, being a movie about video game characters has at least three fictional games that are the homes of the main characters. Ralph and Felix come from Fix-It Felix Jr., a game similar to Donkey Kong and Wrecking Crew. Sergeant Calhoun comes from a game called Hero's Duty, which is a Light Gun Game with a science-fiction design (borrowing elements from Mass Effect and Metroid), and Vanellope comes from Sugar Rush Speedway, a Racing Game inspired by Mario Kart with a candy theme going for it. Finish Line, an arcade game similar to Daytona USA, made a cameo appearance. Other games at the arcade include Fatal Assault, Hoop Jamz, Motoracing, Target Bravo, Time Hunter 4, Turbo Time, and Undead Apocalypse 3. The ending credits suggest there are older versions of the games, the modern games being the latest in a series. Many of the games are made by the TobiKomi company. Two characters, Saitine and the Sorceress, are from unknown games. Extreme EZ Livin' 2, the sequel to EZ Livin' and Extreme EZ Livin', was a social game and Wide-Open Sandbox game that was cut from the movie.
  • Ralph Breaks the Internet has Slaughter Race, an open-world racing game not unlike Grand Theft Auto Online that becomes immensely attractive to Vanellope, who is growing tired of the same old thing back in her home game of Sugar Rush. Pancake Milkshake was a mobile game featured in the trailers, but was removed and placed in the credits with a Lampshade Hanging about scenes that only appear in the previews but not in the actual movie.
  • Planet 51 has several alien pinball machines in the bowling alley.
  • In Ralph Bakshi's X-rated Heavy Traffic, the main character Michael repeatedly plays a pinball machine, a metaphor for the randomness of fate and people's place in the universe.
  • In My Little Pony: Equestria Girls – Rainbow Rocks, Applejack and Rainbow Dash play one at Pinkie's house, based on a humanized version of the Mane-iac.
  • In The Simpsons Movie, there is the Grand Theft Walrus arcade game, later shown on the series, and Baby Blast, played on a Game Boy style handheld.
  • In Jonah: A VeggieTales Movie, the seafood restaurant has an arcade game called Moby Blaster, which is Percy Pea's favorite game.

    Literature 
  • In ½ Prince, Second Life is a fantasy MMORPG that is different than the actual Second Life.
  • In Accel World, there is Brain Burst, an online multiplayer fighting game taking place in the "Accelerated World".
  • In the Alex Rider novel Eagle Strike, there is the Gameslayer video game console.
  • In Armada, there are the Armada and Terra Firma video games.
  • Epic, Saga, and Edda are virtual worlds in The Avatar Chronicles.
  • The Bart Book mentions a Futurama arcade game, and the arcade game Escape From Grandma's House III: The Great Thanksgiving Disaster.
  • Bofuri: I Don't Want to Get Hurt, so I'll Max Out My Defense. is about the fictional VRMMO New World Online, and how Kaede Honjou, in-game alias "Maple," learns to play it. She winds up breaking it wide open in the process, frequently by complete accident, becoming a Comically Invincible Hero and making a lot of friends along the way. Interestingly, while it plays into a lot of the "OP RPG Mechanics 'Verse isekai protagonist" tropes, Bofuri also goes out of its way to make NWO feel like a real MMORPG, and it makes it clear that it isn't an isekai - the game is just that, a game that everyone is having fun with.
  • After a harrowing run through an Indiana Jones-styled hallway loaded with traps and a massive fight at the end of it, the title characters of Billy and Howard go home and play a game based on what they just did.
  • In B to the F: The Novelization of the Feature Film, the games Back to the Future: Marty Quest and Back to the Future: Marty Quest II reference the adventure game styled tone of the novelization. The first game has been defictionalized.
  • Larry Niven's Dream Park features a holographic virtual reality RPG theme park.
  • In Diary of a Wimpy Kid, the main character is a fanboy for the game 'Twisted Wizard', which is apparently on the Wii. He's so obsessed with it, he evens prays to God so that he can beat a level without using a medical pack.
  • Doctor Who: New Series Adventures: Death to Mantodeans, console game featured in the Doctor Who novel "Winner Takes All".
  • The Mind Fantasy Game Free Play in Ender's Game, which seems to be an adventure game, set in some sort of Dream Land, that was designed by the Battle School folks to secretly test each student's creativity and psyche. That Cruelty Is the Only Option in a few of the game's trickier puzzles comes back to torment Ender.
  • Most of Endo and Kobayashi Live! The Latest on Tsundere Villainess Lieselotte takes place in Love Me Magically!, a hybrid Romance Game/Eastern RPG. The player takes the role of Mage Born of Muggles Fiene, with the first half of the game being the "common route" where the player interacts with the capture targets to decide who the player will romance in the second half of the game. The second half of the game has two objectives: romancing the chosen target as well as defeating the Witch of Yore. The titular Endo and Kobayashi are just two Ordinary High School Students attempting to MST the game, but they found one of the romantic interests can hear their commentaries...
  • The hero of the Iain Banks novel Complicity spends most of the book playing a world-builder game called Despot, which he describes as "byzantinely complicated, baroquely beautiful, spectacularly immoral and utterly, utterly addictive." Word of God says it was inspired by Civilization (which supposedly almost made him miss the book's deadline). He also mentions he used to play a sci-fi game named Xerium.
  • Another Iain Banks novel, The Steep Approach To Garbadale, features a family-run games business whose fortune is built on a board game called Empire!.
  • In Fix This Mess! by Tedd Arnold, there is the PZ2 game console.
  • In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, there is the PlayStation game Mega-Mutilation Part Three.
  • In Haruhi Suzumiya, there is the 5 vs 5 strategic space war game The Day of Sagittarius III, defictionalized on the iPhone, and the online game The Day of Sagittarius V in The Surprise of Haruhi Suzumiya.
  • In the Johnny Maxwell Trilogy novel Only You Can Save Mankind, there are the games Alabama Smith and the Jewels of Fate, Megasteroids, and the Shoot 'Em Up Only You Can Save Mankind.
  • Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear is a light novel about a VRMMO.
  • In Labyrinth of Reflections, Labyrinth of Death is a VR cyberspace MMO inspired by Doom.
  • In The Legendary Moonlight Sculptor, there is the MMO Continent of Magic, and the VRMMO Royal Road.
  • In Log Horizon, there is the MMORPG Elder Tales: Homesteading the Noosphere, set in the land of Seldeshia.

  • In the Star Wars Expanded Universe, the highly realistic simulators tend to either be played as games or Unwinnable Training Simulations. Sometimes both. In the Hand of Thrawn duology, Supreme Commander Pellaeon sometimes used an AT-AT simulator. It was frustrating sometimes, but enough unlike his normal duties that it was actually a form of relaxation. Of course, it also meant that he became more familiar with how the machines performed on different terrains, which meant that he might be better able to deploy them.
  • In Diane Duane's Star Trek Expanded Universe novel The Wounded Sky, Sulu put together a spaceflight simulator on the rec deck holotank that lets him play with unconventional sublight combat tactics (flying a starship as if it were a high performance atmospheric fighter). He insists that the underlying physics model is accurate, if on the outer edge of the performance envelope for the Enterprise. Kirk comes in toward the end of a particularly spectacular session where Sulu manages to crash his simulated ship into a Klingon cruiser. A bit later in the book, a situation arises where highly unorthodox sublight combat is called for:
    Kirk: Mr. Sulu, you play tank games, don't you?
    Sulu: Sir! Yes sir—
    Kirk: Get it right this time.
  • The titular game in Killobyte. Piers Anthony also wrote a Xanth book revolving around a game, to give the designers the basic idea of what to make when they defictionalized it.
  • The plot of Halting State by Charles Stross starts with a major event in a World of Warcraft- style game called "Avalon four". Several other MMORPGs appear throughout the book.
  • Several parts of La Révolution des Fourmis of Bernard Werber describe various characters playing a Civilization-like video game named Origines.
  • Dark Krassnia, the MMO created by Lucy Stone and Digital Damage Productions in The Restoration Game by Ken MacLeod, based on Lucy's mother's epic work of Krassnian mythology The Krassniad. There's also the fact that the entire world is a video game of sorts, just a highly detailed one with sentient NPCs.

VRMMOs include the RPG Sword Art Online and its successor ALfheim Online (ALO), the free to play RPG Asuka Empire, and the post-apocalyptic sci-fi RPG Gun Gale Online (GGO) by American company Zaskar. An in-game terminal in the VRMMO LUNASCAPE was used to attempt to access data in a VRMMO for pretty female models. Project Alicization (Underworld) is a simulation using game mechanics.
  • In Fantasy in Death, the murder victim was the lead developer of Fantastical, a holographic VR game which lets players create their own scenarios. The game itself is the murder weapon: the killer tampered with the settings so that the holograms can cause real injuries.

One of the games Baby and Woody play is called Tarpit Idiots, where the goal is to save three idiots who closely resemble Earl, Robbie, and Roy from sinking into a tarpit. This ultimately reminds Baby that he should be saving Earl, Robbie, and Roy for real instead of playing a video game resembling it.
  • In the Sesame Street special Elmo's Alphabet Challange Elmo, Abby and Telly play an alphabet game on her "FlyPad", which includes a series of minigames such as Super Mustachio Bros, Angry Words, and World of Elfcraft, as well as unnamed pastiches of Guitar Hero, Pac-Man, Just Dance and Mario Kart.

Many elements of the game reflect the Critic's criticisms of the movie: the scenery is dark, there's very little action, the "demons" are zombified humans, amped-up rock music goes just as quickly as it comes, the setting is limited to Mars (Hell is a metaphor), and the BFG can only uselessly be fired at walls twice.
  • This is the central conceit of the TierZoo channel on YouTube. TierZoo teaches zoology by pretending that all of the natural world is a MMORPG known as Outside, and that all the animals it examines are different builds that the Outside player base has created by tweaking stats and evolutionary features. The channel's narrator then discusses the pros and cons of the different "builds", their interaction with their "server", (the Africa server is noted as being probably the most competitive and toughest to survive) and how the different "clan strategies" (read the social behavior of the different animals) all effect the viability of the animal and its ability to thrive in the environment.
