Crossover Ship (trope)
"(playing with action figures) Our love is forbidden by continuity... and yet somehow, it's like it was always meant to happen!"
Red, Overly Sarcastic Productions, "Blue's College Survival Guide"

As any shipper knows, love conquers all, even in the face of continuity. The logical extreme of this is Intercontinuity Crossover Fan Work.

As a general rule, this is much more light-hearted and less Serious Business than intra-continuity shipping, favoring the Rule of Funny instead of an unironic OTP. These ships are usually labeled as Crack Pairings, but it's not impossible to make some of them seem like they can actually work, depending on various factors.

When you factor in Non Linear Sequels like the Final Fantasy series that have multiple continuities, series with a multiverse and even official Massive Multiplayer Crossover franchises like Super Smash Bros. and Kingdom Hearts, it all turns into Schrodinger's Ship, as it becomes simultaneously impossible and canon-friendly.

Theme Pairing holds a lot of Crossover Ships. Common Crossover may relate. Series where preferred relationships are not possible or unlikely due to Situational Sexuality requires branching out of that Verse. Crossover Couple is for when this appears in semi-canon, canon, and licensed material, as well as specific fan-works.

Since there are infinite possible crossover pairings, don't be surprised if you don't see a crossover pairing that already has fanart, fan videos, and/or fanfiction for it here.

    Comic Books
  • Green Goblin (Spider-Man) manages to hook up with Harley Quinn (Batman) in I'm a Marvel, I'm a DC. It's just as messed up as it sounds and twice as funny. And just because the creator loves doing it, he also gave us Poison Ivy and Sandman. Which makes sense if you think about it, except she'll probably cheat on him with Aquaman.
  • Possibly the most patriotic ship in all of comics: Captain America and Wonder Woman. It's surprisingly not as common as one might think.
  • Deadpool and Harley Quinn is also a rather popular pairing, with reasons ranging from similar colour palette to love of violence. In some circles, it matches Harley's canon ships of Harley/Joker and Harley/Ivy.
  • From The Incredible Hulk and X-Men: Evolution: Hulk's Big Damn Heroes moment in Episode 3, Hulk/X-23. This one technically isn't a crossover ship as the two exist in the same continuity. Though it is pure crack, as aside from the age difference (she's 16, Hulk's pushing 40), the one time these two have met involved Hulk beating the hell out of her friends and throwing her through a building.
  • Spider-Man has been shipped with both Supergirl and Power Girl, and due to the two girls' relationship with each other they're sometimes combined into one person, who's Supergirl when they're teenagers and Power Girl when they're adults.
  • The Spider-X series sees Rogue forming a relationship with Peter Parker (Spider-Man) after he joins the institute; these two loners form a deep and genuinely emotional bond, that later develops a physical dynamic when Peter develops a 'power nullifier' that shuts down Rogue's powers while she's wearing it.
  • Watchmen:
    • Ozymandias plus Oscar Wilde. Wouldn't they be perfect for each other?
    • Ozymandias/Alexander the Great/Hephaestion threesome. Enjoy.

    Crossovers — Multiple Media

    Film — Animated

    Film — Live-Action
  • In the wake of the release of Superman (2025), it became common to see that film's version of Supergirl paired with the DC Extended Universe version of the character seen in The Flash (2023). Fanart usually showcases in some way how dramatically different the two portrayals are, with The Flash Supergirl being a brooding, no-nonsense Action Girl played by the short-haired, dark-featured Sasha Calle, contrasting with Milly Alcock's blue-eyed, blonde-haired Hard-Drinking Party Girl.
  • Marvel Cinematic Universe:
    • The High Queen Daenerys Targaryen of Game of Thrones and Physical God Loki Odinson of the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies are a very, very popuar pairing. The name of the ship is Frostdragons. note
    • Loki and Morgana of Merlin are shipped because of their many similarities and because if married, they are the ultimate Unholy Matrimony.
    • Tony Stark and Martin Crieff from Cabin Pressure. It works because the two get along famously when they start talking geeky (which is bound to happen, when an unpaid pilot who wanted to be an airplane as a kid meets a genius who invented a flying suit), and Martin isn't at all interested in Tony's money or influence.
    • Ever since Steve Rogers/Bucky Barnes ("Stucky") exploded in popularity, many fics have been written that pair Steve with other characters played by Bucky's actor Sebastian Stan that play off of the characters' physical resemblance to his best friend, most notably T.J. Hammond from Political Animals.
    • Once Wonder Woman (2017) came out, it is quite common to pair Diana with Captain America, as both are superheroes who fought in a World War setting. The fact that Diana's canon love interest is also named Steve certainly helps.
  • There is a fanfic series that pairs up Dr. Frank N. Furter (The Rocky Horror Picture Show) and Captain Jack Sparrow (Pirates of the Caribbean).
  • Captain Jack (Pirates of the Caribbean) / Captain Jack (Torchwood).
  • Jack (Pirates of the Caribbean) / Jack (The Nightmare Before Christmas) note .
  • John Blake (The Dark Knight Rises) and Natasha Romanova (The Avengers) Link to a fan fic.
  • High School Musical's Ryan Evans and Kurt Hummel of Glee.
  • Leatherface (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre) x Flippy (Happy Tree Friends). Oh dear lord...
  • Khan (Star Trek Into Darkness) and John Watson (Sherlock) [13].
  • Here's an interesting one: Bilbo Baggins (The Hobbit) and Daisy Buchanan (The Great Gatsby). And it kind of makes sense: one is a Humble Hero and the other is a Broken Bird. As long as Gatsby doesn't find out...
  • Mary Poppins and Ms. Frizzle from The Magic School Bus have a fan-following together. It's probably due to them both being Magical Guardians.
  • Pennywise from It (2017) and The Babadook have become a surprisingly popular couple.
  • Thranduil from The Hobbit and Daenerys Targaryen from Game of Thrones have a fair amount of fanfiction, videos and art dedicated to them. Though it's often hard to tell which video edits are for this ship or just using Dany as a stand-in for Thranduil's canonical wife since she has the stereotypical appearance of a Sindarin elf: which is probably how this ship evolved in the first place.
  • Little China Girl from Oz the Great and Powerful gets shipped with the wooden clown Eot Ling from Tales of the Magic Land. Considering the universes aren't entirely unrelated, it works quite prettily.
  • Sadako (The Ring) and Jason Voorhees (Friday the 13th) seems to be a somewhat popular ship, particularly among Japanese fanartists. The two of them being horror villains who suffered from tragic childhood deaths, coupled with a Huge Guy, Tiny Girl dynamic, seems to make a for a good bond.
  • One's film is set in the middle of The '50s and the other's film is set in 2007, but despite this, many writers have Rhoda Penmark (The Bad Seed (1956)) romance Leena Klammer (Orphan) with Rhoda still the young child that she is in The Bad Seed.
  • Some fans of Joker (2019) have taken to shipping Arthur Fleck with one of his cinematic inspirations, Travis Bickle from Taxi Driver. The two characters share a lot of similarities such as their isolation from most of society, and some fans feel they would make a surprisingly good fit for each other and actually help one another. The fan fiction People Like Us is probably the most popular story for this pairing.
  • A fairly popular ship for fans of Ophelia and/or Star Wars is shipping Ophelia with Kylo Ren, probably because Rey (also played by Daisy Ridley) has a lot of Foe Romance Subtext with Kylo, and Kylo himself is a conflicted Byronic Hero with Parental Issues, not unlike Hamlet. note
  • On FanFiction.Net there is about 1100 crossovers between Camp Rock and Wizards of Waverly Place. Turns out that it's quite popular to ship Mitchie Torres with Alex Russo. This is due to their actors real life relationship, as well as feeling each of their personalities would play off well with each other. They also feel that they would fill a similar dynamic to that of Alex/Justin.
  • A lot of fans ship Miranda Priestly and Andy Sachs (The Devil Wears Prada) with Cruella de Vil (101 Dalmatians (1996)), either individually or together. A lot of this comes from how similar Miranda and Cruella are to each other, so a lot of fans feel they would have good chemistry. They also feel that Andy would have a similar dynamic with Cruella and will often rewrite the film with Cruella in Miranda's role. The fact that both their actresses have appeared opposite Glenn Close before in different films also helps. The threesome pairing has a lot of fanfiction about it and is only topped by the very popular Miranda/Andy/Emily.
  • There is a rather large base of fans who ship Wednesday Addams (The Addams Family) and Lydia Deetz (Beetlejuice) around the internet, with it being especially popular on AO3. This is mainly because they are both goths in Black Comedy franchises who have dry senses of humor and a fascination with death.
  • Due to the "Barbenheimer" meme, many people have legitimately started shipping Barbie (Barbie (2023)) and J. Robert Oppenheimer (Oppenheimer) together, including writing fanfics and drawing fan art of the characters in a romantic relationship.
  • A lot of fans online ship CC Walker (Family Switch) and Cairo Sweet (Miller's Girl) due to the real-life friendship between their actresses Emma Myers and Jenna Ortega and the fact that said actresses played the popular ship Wednesday/Enid on Wednesday.
  • In the middle of October 2025, Tiktok users began shipping Regina George (Mean Girls) and Rodrick Heffley (Diary of a Wimpy Kid) together due to the appeal of their possible Opposites Attract dynamic. It quickly spread to Twitter/X and Tumblr and within days gained a large amount of fanart and fanfics.

  • Vocaloid:
    • Miku and Black★Rock Shooter. What really put BRS into the limelight was the Vocaloid synthesizer band Supercell, and BRS's initial design was basically a recolor of Miku's. A lot of pics emphasis the dark/light duality.
    • Miku and Cherry of the band Studio Killers has popped up due to them both being fictional female singers. It helps that Cherry is canonically bisexual.

    Visual Novels
  • Downplayed in Danganronpa. People like to ship characters from different installments of the series, even if they haven't interacted in canon. Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony's bonus mode Ultimate Talent Development Plan and Danganronpa S: Ultimate Summer Camp take place in an official, non-canon AU where the characters all have a normal school life at Hope's Peak, intermingling between games. Their interactions may inspire or fuel some cross-ships.
  • Monika (Doki Doki Literature Club!) and The Princess (Slay the Princess) have been gaining traction, especially in DEATH BATTLE! fan circles, due to both of them being female Reality Warper antagonists in subversive Western visual novels. Expect Flowey from Undertale to show up in any fanart of the two, usually as an antagonistic force who opposes the relationship. Even the developers of Slay the Princess have taken notice!
