When a character blows a raspberry at someone. Also called "giving someone the raspberry." Also known as the Bronx Cheer (and technically known as an "unvoiced linguolabial trill"), it is a mild taunting gesture that tends to signify immaturity in the user. Done by sticking one's tongue out, and usually placing each hand spread-fingered and thumb-in at the ears, and then blowing, making a "pthththt" sound. The origin of the term is Cockney Rhyming Slang: "fart" -> "raspberry tart".

If a character sticks out their tongue and pulls down their eyelid, it's an Eyelid Pull Taunt instead. Without the noise, it's a Tongue-Out Insult.

Advertising

• Sonic the Hedgehog does this to a woman who complains about him in an advertisement during Sega's Mascot with Attitude phase.

Anime & Manga

• Tubby does this after Lulu flicks him on the nose in Episode 8 of the Little Lulu anime.
• Usagi Tsukino and Rei Hino of Sailor Moon do this twice to eachother in one episode... much to the chagrin of their teammates. Cue sweat-drops.

Comic Books

• Figment: In the final issue of Figment 2, Figment does this after getting the mesmonic converter away from a possessed by the Doubtfinder Academy Scientifica Lucidus student only to run into a possessed Chairman Auckley.
• A few examples from The Smurfs:
  • In the comic book story "Smurphony In 'C'" (and its Animated Adaptation counterpart), Harmony lures Gargamel out onto a ledge over a ravine with his turlisiphone and causes him to fall over, grabbing onto the log for dear life. When Harmony threatens to play the instrument to send Gargamel to his doom, Gargamel pleads for mercy, and Harmony remembers that Papa Smurf told him that he should never kick a Smurf when he's down, so he instead razzes the evil wizard.
  • In "The Smurf Not Like The Others" (also known as "Traveling Smurf"), the traveling Smurf does this to Azrael when being chased around Gargamel's house, thinking he has escaped the cat by hiding himself inside a bottle, but instead ends up taunting the cat into pushing the bottle off the shelf to break it.
  • In "The Smurfnapper", a Smurf blows a raspberry to taunt Azrael into jumping out of Gargamel's house through the window, after which through some quick maneuvering the Smurf closes up the window and locks it, preventing the cat from returning inside.

Comic Strips

• Calvin and Hobbes at one point get into a long argument which just degenerates into the two of them blowing raspberries at each other.
  Calvin: Leave it to mom to interrupt our repartee.
  Hobbes: Just when I had you wriggling in the crushing grip of reason, too.
• Bill the Cat does this in Bloom County, but it's more of a Verbal Tic than meant for rudeness (although sometimes it's meant that way). Tess of Tess Turbo and the Blackheads also does this for an album cover shoot in another strip.
• Garfield once said that raspberries are a good way to tick someone off. The wetter, the better.
  • In one strip, he notes to the reader that he's having a hard time coming up with something that rhymes with the sound of a raspberry. (It was for a poem written as an ode to Monday.)
  • In another strip, he tries to teach Odie how to do this.
• From the comic Li'l Abner, this is the pronunciation of Joe Btfsplk's last name. As artist Al Capp said, "How else would you pronounce it?"

Fan Works

• Ask a Pony character Fluffle Puff communicates solely in these. As one segment proves (when she switches bodies with Queen Chrysalis), she's physically capable of speech, she just doesn't talk.

Films — Animation

• Aladdin:
  • Aladdin's sidekick Abu does this taunting gesture to the head of the guards during the chase scene.
  • When Aladdin reneges or hesitates on his agreement to use his final wish to free the Genie, the ensuing argument ends with the Genie giving him a raspberry out of the lamp.
• In An American Tail, Fievel blows one at the cat gang he's being chased by when he thinks he's escaped. However, they end up catching him.
  • In An American Tail: The Treasure of Manhattan Island, Fievel blows a raspberry at Tanya when their parents refuse to let her go on a treasure hunt instead of Fievel.
• Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker. The Joker after the following statement:
  Joker: Adios, Brucie. I guess I should salute you as a worthy adversary and all that, but the truth is I really did hate your guts.
• Chicken Little. At one point in Mutton Class, Abby razzes Foxy, who insulted Abby by calling her "Ugly Duckling."
• Seems to be standard lingo for the Evil Minions in Despicable Me 2. When Gru and two non-infected Minions infiltrate El Macho's fortress by pretending to be captured, one of them gets into a raspberry contest with an Evil Minion that escalates until it wipes the purple paint of his face and blows their cover.
• The soundtrack appears on screen in Fantasia. His first emission is a Bronx cheer.
• Flushed Away. During the chase scene, Rita razzes The Toad's henchrats (and also slaps her butt at them) in the Jammy Dodger.
• Luca:
  • After Giulia first saves Luca and Alberto from Ercole, she leaves while blowing one at him.
  • Guido does a well-deserved one to Ercole after he and Ciccio throw him in the fountain as payback for his constant abuse.
• Missing Link: After escaping from Shangri-La with his friends, Mr. Link blows a raspberry at the Elder Yeti, surprising her enough to make her break her contemptuous frown.
• Monsters, Inc.: Boo blows a raspberry at Randall, whose door got destroyed by Sulley and Mike so he couldn't come back.
• In Race for Your Life, Charlie Brown, one of the camp bullies razzes Charlie Brown and the gang a few times.
• Surf's Up: Cody does this to his older brother Glen after Glen insults his surfing talents. Mrs. Maverick and Glen then chide Cody for doing this as it's very disrespectful.
• The Fox and the Hound 2: Tod does this to Chief before he starts running to show Dixie his skills. Chief runs after Tod to try and catch him.
• In The Great Mouse Detective, Rattigan's appearance in the Royal Palace elicits Dramatic Gasps from the crowd, except one little kid, who just razzes him.
• The Lion King (1994): Simba does this during the song "I Can't Wait to be King" with Nala.
• In The Lion King II: Simba's Pride, Simba's daughter, Kiara, razzes the crocodiles after she and Kovu escape them.
• The Little Mermaid (1989): Flounder blows a razz at Glut the shark when he and Ariel subdue him. Glut then snaps his jaws at him, frightening the fish.
• In Puss in Boots: Kitty Softpaws blows a raspberry at Puss as a way of taunting him after she interrupts him from stealing beans from outlaws Jack and Jill, and then attempts to run away from him.
• In The Lorax (2012): The Once-ler blows a raspberry at the Lorax after he tells him he can't cut down trees in the forest.
• The Powerpuff Girls Movie: Blossom blows one to Bubbles after tagging her during the Tag sequence. Later on in the film, Buttercup does this to Blossom during the climax when the girls are trying to save the citizens of Townsville.
• In The Spongebob Squarepants Movie, this is the extent of SpongeBob telling off Mr. Krabs for thinking he's still a kid.
• In Toy Story 2, Woody blows a raspberry during the outtakes in the credits to Buzz (Or the audience) in a Buzz Lightyear spaceship box at Al's Toy Barn while making silly faces.
• Toy Story 3: Big Baby does this to Lotso after he throws him into the dumpster and turns on him.
• In a Missing Trailer Scene from Up, Carl blows a raspberry at the nursing home orderlies as his house floats away. In the final scene, he just says, "I'll send you a postcard from Paradise Falls."

Films — Live-Action

• The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl: One of the students does this to prove that Max's story sucks and is just made up (though it really isn't).
• Mrs. White in Clue gives a very demure and ladylike one to Wadsworth.
• The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland features the Queen of Trash demanding 100 of these raspberries in a set time.
• Parodied in Spaceballs: The villain exclaims, "There is only one man, who would dare give me the raspberry! Lone Starr!" after the hero has jammed the villain's spaceship's radar with... jam... raspberry flavored jam.
• Monty Python and the Holy Grail. The French knight does this to King Arthur and his knights each time he meets them.
• In the original version of Bedazzled (1967), blowing a raspberry ended the Devil's current fulfilled wish. And eventually it didn't, leaving Stanley turned into a nun and constantly blowing raspberries in a convent.
• The Carry On characters often did this when they were mad — presumably in replace of a swear word.
• In The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, Gollum blows a raspberry in response to Sam telling him about cooked food and "taters."
• What Price Glory: A Running Gag. Pvt. Kiper keeps blowing raspberries at Capt. Flagg when Flagg's back is turned, only for a furious Flagg to turn around and try and figure out who did it. When Kiper finally forgets himself and blows a raspberry with Flagg standing right next to him, Flagg kicks him in the butt.
• Ted: John and Ted finish the Thunder Song with raspberries.
• In Pardon Us, Laurel and Hardy's first feature-length movie, the two get thrown into prison. Stanley's loose tooth makes it sound like he's blowing a raspberry at the end of every sentence. Their big scary cellmate gets one and laughs, complimenting his bravery. Ollie tries it and gets popped in the mouth.
• In Let It Ride, Trotter does this to the members, and staff, of the Jockey Club after he gets kicked out.
• In Overboard Joanna gives one to Dean and his sons as she sprays them with a hose to get even with them for making her do all of the work and squirting chocolate syrup all over her.
• In Toothless Bobby blows one at Katerine as the tooth fairy, who in return blows one back at him.
• In the A Christmas Story, Raphie, Randy and their mother blow raspberries after singing Jingle Bells on a car ride.
  Parker Family: Oh what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh! [Blow Raspberries]
• In Jumpin' Jack Flash, Terry blows one at a KGB lackey after he tries to inject truth serum into her but she escapes by rolling up the window of his car while he is reaching in from outside, then she puts his car in drive
• In Are We There Yet? Nick honks his horn at a kid running across the street who then blows him a raspberry.
• In Big Fat Liar Marty Wolf blows a raspberry at Jason Shepherd after he tells him he will never reveal the truth about him stealing Jason's story. Seconds later, it's revealed the whole thing was filmed on multiple cameras and shown to the news media, Marcus Duncan, and Jason's parents, dramatically vindicating Jason once and for all and sending Wolf's career right down the toilet.
• In Dumb and Dumber Lloyd blows a raspberry at Harry during the end credits.
• In Ace Ventura: Pet Detective Ace does this with a peace out sign to Lois
• In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, the Howler Ron receives from his mother actually transforms into a moving mouth, complete with lips, teeth and a tongue. After berating him for stealing the flying car, it briefly stops to congratulate Ginny for entering Gryffindor and then blows a raspberry at Ron before shredding itself to bits.
• In the Hitch blooper reel Allegra blows one (probably after messing up one of her lines)
• In A Knight's Tale, Wat does this to Count Adamar to taunt him after he loses a jousting match.
• In One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest Harding and Taber get into an argument while having a group discussion and at one point Taber blows a raspberry at Harding.
• In 10 Things I Hate About You Kat playfully blows one at Patrick while they are playing a game of paintball
• In Spy, Karen Walker is a cool CIA Agent. She acts snobbish to Susan Cooper and Nancy B. Artingstall at dinner. She brags about her yacht missions. She leaves, telling them how tanned she will be after her next mission. She politely leaves, going to flirt with a group of men at their table. As she leaves, Nancy sticks out her tongue, blowing a sloppy raspberry. Karen turns around to stare at her. Nancy blames this on Susan farting.
• The Silly Will of the deceased uncle from Horror Comedy Saturday The Fourteenth leaves his sister (who'd always borrowed his things and never returned them) several thousand overdue library books, plus a big fat raspberry blown by his executor.
• In Star Wars, R2-D2 can't actually blow a raspberry, but he occasionally makes sounds that are remarkably similar to blowing a raspberry. C3-PO is a frequent target.
• In Doctor in Trouble, Dr. Burke blows one at a departing Stedman Green as payback for being called a "weirdy".
• In Mutiny on the Buses, Stan does this to Blakey to show how fed-up he is with the new radio control system:
  Blakey: You got the message then, have ya? Any comments?
  Stan: Yeah, only one... pbbbbbbt!
  Blakey: Little interference, I think, sir.

Literature

• A Clockwork Orange has a few instances of what Alex calls "lip-music":
  • The old drunk at the beginning, defying Alex and his droogs.
  • Dim's reaction to an excerpt from F. Alexander's book.
  • Alex delivers a narrative one to all his opponents in the final paragraph.
• Black the horse from Gunfighter's Ride does this constantly.
• Peeves in Harry Potter is shown doing this to various authority figures, to accent his immaturity and trickster nature.
• The Heirs of Alexandria: A nixie (water spirit) does this to the heroes to prove that she's an ally. The villain of the series, the demon Chernobog, doesn't understand the concept of humor and neither do any of his minions. By being silly, the nixie proves that she can't be a servant of Chernobog.
• The title character from Amelia's Notebook often does this to Cleo, her bratty sister as Marissa Moss designed/illustrated the girl doing it on one of the books, published several times by Mattel (through their American Girls Collection book series), Simon and Schuster and Scholastic. The title character always does this (as her own taunt) to annoy her young sister (while writing and/or doodling in her notebook).

Live-Action TV

• In The Andy Griffith Show Season 5 episode 22, a hobo blows a raspberry at Barney for yelling at him and making him leave private property he was camping on.
• In The Dick Van Dyke Show Season 5 episode 29, Rob tells Laura that he doesn't want to invite Jerry to a Thornton Alsbury play because the last time they took him to one he sat there and blew raspberries the entire time. At the end of the episode Rob, Laura, Jerry and Millie all blow raspberries to disapprove of the mini tapie that Jerry recorded.
• In an episode of Hogan's Heroes, Klink takes issue with Hogan about his men directing this noise at him. Hogan convinces him that the Bronx cheer is actually an American gesture of respect and admiration. Subsequently, when the prisoners again blow a raspberry, Klink beams with pride.
• In The Two Ronnies serial The Phantom Raspberry Blower of Old London Town, the Prime Minister and the leaders of the Commonwealth are meeting to discuss the threat of the Phantom. Who drops in uninvited, and blows a raspberry at them that's powerful enough to make the Queen's portrait blush and bring the chandelier down.
• In The Waltons Season 1 episode "The Carnival", Mary-Ellen and Elizabeth razz a snobby girl after she tells them she went to the carnival in town and then rubs it in their face saying that they are too poor to go to the carnival.
• All in the Family: Archie Bunker has this as his catchphrase. Mike (Meathead) takes a page out of his book and gives one to God in one episode. Archie doesn't take it well.
• Frequently done on Are You Being Served? in conjunction with the Two-Finger Salute.
• Lily Tomlin's little girl character, Edith Ann, had it as part of her catchphrase: "And that's the truth. *pthbt*"
• Monty Python's Flying Circus:
  • A psychiatrist gets a lecture from a man dressed like Napoleon Bonaparte about speaking predictably. When the psychiatrist does it again, the man blows a raspberry.
  • The Party at Oscar Wilde's sketch pulls a raspberry at the end when Wilde cannot explain an insult to the Prince of Wales credited to him.
• In Emergency! a bratty little boy razzes Roy after he tells him not to bite his dog in the episode "Details".
• In Happy Days episode "Haunted" a little boy dressed up as a trick or treater razzes Howard when he asks him for a kiss in exchange for 2 candies
• Laverne & Shirley
  • In the episode "Bowling for Razzberries" Laverne vows to beat her enemy Karen in a bowling game so she can blow a raspberry in her face but she ends up getting sick and can't do it so Shirley calls Karen on the phone and blows her a raspberry
  • In the season 8 episode "The Fashion Show" Laverne blows one at Mike Bailey after he walks out the door because she is jealous that her fashion photographer boyfriend Mike Bailey is spending time with other models at his job and it is taking time away from their relationship
• In Saturday Night Live, Season 2 Episode 17, While giving the weekend update, Jane Curtin announces that Roman Poloski is making plans to film a remake of Louisa May Alcott's "Little Women". She gives her opinion by blowing a raspberry.

  • In Season 1 Episode 6, Mrs. Warner looks up at the sky says "Where are you when I need you" and then blows a raspberry at God after her grandaughter Shirlee tells her she would rather date the man she wants over a doctor

• On SCTV Catherine O'Hara blows one at Rick Moranis during "The Brooke Shields Show" Skit.
• In Little House on the Prairie Season 9 episode "For the Love of Blanche" Mr. Edwards takes care of a monkey who is very fond of blowing raspberries
• On Hee Haw, they throw one in at the end of the "Where O Where Are You Tonight" song.
• In Silver Spoons episode "Summer Romance Part 2" Kate blows one at Edward after he kisses another woman and gives her a bad reason why he did.
• In Highway to Heaven A young boy played by Wil Wheaton razzes an elderly man who tells him to quit making a bunch of noise at the hotel.
• In Perfect Strangers episode "Check This" Susan blows a raspberry as a response to Mr. Twinkacetti when he is rude to her.
• In Mr. Belvedere Season 3 episode 4, Wesley blows a raspberry at him when he makes him eat Brussel sprouts and then taunts him with ice cream.
• In ''The Facts of Life episode "Rites of Passage" Jo's father travels from Poland to come see her graduate and finds out she will not be giving the speech she was supposed to give, he tells Jo and Blair that he will give a raspberry to the "spineless coward" who will be making the speech and Blair tells him that he can save his raspberry because she is the one who will be giving it.
• In a Saturday Night Live skit a woman (portrayed by Victoria Jackson) responds to her husband (portrayed by Kevin Kline) by blowing raspberries more than speaking.
• In The Hogan Family, Season 6 Episode 6, Lloyd buys Mark and Willie a motorcycle without informing Michael and Michael gets upset about it. He gives Lloyd a stern talking to and Lloyd responds with a raspberry

  • In the episode "The King and I", Becky blows a raspberry at Jesse when he tells her to leave him alone,

• In iCarly episode "iDream of Dance" Carly uses this as a response to Zeke's creepy flirting.
• In Zoey 101 Lola does this to Quinn in the episode "Anger Management" when Quinn begs her to say something, anything to her so that she doesn't have to endure Lola's silent treatment anymore.
• In Bones episode "Harbingers in a Fountain" Brennan and Boothe both blow raspberries as a way of dismissing Angela talking about her psychic, and the episode "The Dwarf in the Dirt" Brennan blows a raspberry and gives a thumbs down after Boothe knocks out a midget wrestler
• In Community, Leonard often does this.
• In Victorious pilot, Jade blows one at Tori to be rude because she doesn't like her and thinks she was flirting with her boyfriend.
• Doctor Who: In the Series 5 episode, "The Lodger", The Eleventh Doctor does this while dealing with a very rude client while covering for Craig Owens. Craig is HORRIFIED!

• In the It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia episode "A Very Sunny Christmas" Dee and Dennis try to make small talk with people at a Christmas party so they don't notice a guy crammed inside their couch. Dee makes small talk by bringing up Frank Reynolds and then giving a thumbs down while blowing a raspberry.
• How I Met Your Mother:
  • In "Big Days", Ted has a flash back to when he went out with a girl named Cindy and it didn't end that well and in one scene he sees her at college after they broke up and says hi to her, she responds by imitating him in a mocking voice, blowing him a raspberry, and then walking away.
  • In "Challenge Accepted" Robin gives a thumbs down and and blows a raspberry when Ted tries to ask her out.
  • In "Who Wants to be a Godparent?", Lily gives a thumbs down and blows a raspberry as a response to Barney's answer about what he would say to their kid if they died and were not around anymore.
• In New Girl Nick and Jess blow each other raspberries while fighting in episode "Kids"
• In Cougar Town episode "Square One" Jules gives a thumbs down and blows a raspberry while talking to a therapist named Lynn Mettler about living with Grayson after his house sustains Hurricane damage. Later on in the episode Lynn blows a raspberry and gives a thumbs down Jules.
• In the Castle episode "Swan Song", Beckett is annoyed her by a camera crew that follows her everywhere she goes in order to before locking them in a closet as a joke.
• Last Man Standing

• Caillou: The Season 5 episode "Raspberry Ruckus" has this as the main plot point. When Rosie learns how to blow raspberries from Caillou, their mother is worried that Rosie will blow a raspberry at the wrong time and place and embarrass people.

• Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends:
  • The movie "[1]" has Sweetums blow a raspberry at Frankie around the second act, who does it right back to her. Later on, when Mac prevents Bloo from being adopted from Sweetums, he fires a raspberry at her before going to Mac.
  • In the episode "Busted", Bloo accidentally breaks Mr. Herriman's bust of Madame Foster after Mr. Herriman scares him into following very specific rules. He enlists Mac, Wilt, Coco and Eduardo to help him find a solution to repair it. After several failed attempts, such as tape and glue, they decide to enlist the real Madame Foster herself to stand on the pedestal and pretend to be the bust. Mr. Herriman walks by, and believes it is the bust, and does not know it is the real Madame Foster. He talks to what he thinks is the bust, talking to it as if it is representing Madame Foster and calls Frankie, who is her granddaughter, a slacker, and asks how the two are related. Naturally offended for her granddaughter, Madame Foster is unable to stand still, loses control of her emotions and sticks out her tongue and blows a loud raspberry at him. Mr. Herriman mistakes it for Bloo farting and after allowing Bloo to say "Excuse me", gives him a warning.
  • In the episode "The Trouble With Scribbles", the Scribbles only speak in raspberries. Bloo has so much fun with the Scribbles he starts blowing raspberries himself to speak with them, even blowing a big one at the viewers by the episode's end.
