"Time for my ultimate attack: The Day Bats!"

In fictionland and in Real Life, bats are frightful creatures, and in cultures across the world, they are linked to darkness and the domain of night. A swarm of bats may live in dark places untouched by unsuspecting victims, until one appears in their way.

But what if someone calls upon them as a type of attack?

In fictionland, dark-aligned characters will draw on the powers of darkness to cast shadow attacks, control terrible Tendrils of Darkness, and even teleport through shadows. In addition, they may invoke a swarm of bats as a manifestation of their dark powers.

Simple forms of this casting involve the characters swishing their capes and releasing the swarm at their opponent. A more imposing form consists of the character creating and/or controlling a large swarm with their powers.

The trope may appear in the following users:

  1. Vampires: Due to Our Vampires Are Different, they possess this ability either due to them becoming a bat, or through a pact with demonic forces.
    1. A subtype of this one involves the character shapeshifting into a swarm of bats to teleport away, and attacking their enemies while still in this form.
  2. Other darkness users: drawing on the above description, the character may cast a swarm of bats as a manifestation of their dark powers.
  3. Artificially: Excluding examples where there is magic or dark powers involved, a swarm of bats may be weaponized against people by the use of a device.
  4. The swarm is the character, as a variation on The Worm That Walks. In video games, they may also be a Asteroids Monster type of enemy.

This is not to be confused with Bat People or Animorphism, wherein a person is a bat-like creature or turns into a bat, but they can serve as explanation for why the character has such powers in the first place.

The archetype of The Beastmaster may also manipulate bats, but they usually commune with extant animals in nature and do not conjure them. The bats may also be utilized by The Minion Master.

Subtrope to The Swarm, and to Bat Out of Hell (type 1), where the bats in question may cause a Bat Scare in unsuspecting victims.

Contrast Swarm of Rats, Scary Stinging Swarm, Spider Swarm, and Ant Assault.

Half of the vampires walking around are shown during the day. It is not until Samantha points out to Jake that it is daytime during their fight does he burn up in the sun.

How well does it match the trope?
