Martin Herrick, a hunter from the damp hills of northern England, has stepped onto the path that separates men from mere boys in the 12th century. In response to the slaughter of their fellow Welshmen, a company of rebels march on Chester. Herrick is levied into Lord Rothbury's standing army and packed off to meet them.
