The Demon Lord and Wife

Anima is an unbeatable Demon Lord who lives in gloom and depression in his home world. You see, he just wants to be loved. But, after getting some bad advice from his harem lord father, he spends one hundred years building himself up into an unbeatable entity who is feared by everyone. Unable to even talk to people without them grovelling for their lives or running in fear, it seems his dream of a loving wife and family will never come true.

That is, until one day he is summoned by the beautiful Luina when she uses a magic artifact in a moment of duress. Luina is a poor daughter of a once famous scion of the kingdom and hero but she has been reduced to abject poverty and struggles to run an orphanage from day to day. Luina used her summon artifact to randomly gate in something to deal with a goblin which was going to attack her and the children she cares for. Ripping Anima from his homeworld, he is brought into Luina's world where nobody knows who he is and he can start over without being the most feared creature in existence. Anima dispatches the goblin without so much as a thought and expects Luina to freak out at his appearance. She does not and thanks him profusely.

Anima falls in love with Luina at once and brazenly proposes marriage to her on the spot. Luina is hesitant and a bit shocked but accepts, as it turns out she too fell for the dashing demon lord at first sight too. Anima's lovey-dovey adventures with his new family then begins amid evil villains wanting to take Luina's summoning gem by force and having to win over the two children who live in the orphanage with Luina.

Why Shouldn't a Detestable Demon Lord Fall in Love? (嫌われ魔王が没落令嬢と恋に落ちて何が悪い!, Kirawa re maō ga botsuraku reijō to koiniochite nani ga warui!) is a Slice of Life Light Novel by Nekomata Nuko and illustrated by Teffish. It is being translated into English and made available by Sol Press. After Sol Press's closure, it was rescued by J-Novel Club.

Provides examples of:

  • Action Dad: Anima, especially in LN#1 in which he uses force against threats to his family several times.
  • After the End: Luina's world is still recovering from the rampages of a world-ending demon called The Harbringer. The nations of the world stopped their wars and allied together to fight it but the world was very nearly brought to an end. It was Luina's ancestor that successfully lead the defense and attained The Harbringer Stone (which she uses to summon Anima) after it was defeated. While it has been about 300 years since this event, it is still fresh in everyone's mind and Luina is safekeeping the gem in case the Harbringer ever returns.
  • Berserk Button: Don't threaten or harass Anima's new wife or family. Just, don't.
  • Big Sister Instinct: Myuke takes her position of big sister to Marie, and later to Bram, very seriously. She will protect them, worry about them and even defend them as a Hunter (although this is unnecessary with Anima present).
  • Crapsack World: Very much so in LN#1 although toned down in the second volume. Much of this is explained by the fact that the world Luina lives in was brought to the edge of destruction about 300 years before the story begins by a world-ending demon called The Harbringer. The Harbringer was stopped but not before most of the world and nations on it were totally destroyed.
    • The local leader in volume 1 and highest ranking hunter and his henchmen treat women as sex objects only to be captured and used.
    • A local store selling and buying magical gems is located in a shack much to Anima's surprise.
    • There are demons roaming outside the city which are battled by Hunters, the world's equivalent to adventurers.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Anytime Anima gets into a fight. He wins with no effort.
  • Cuteness Overload: Often happens to Anima when a heartwarming moment happens with his new family.
  • Cuteness Proximity: Marie and anything resembling a bunny rabbit.
  • Distracted by the Sexy: Preparing to see Luina in a swimsuit, Anima prepares something nice to say. The sight of his new wife in her revealing outfit makes his brain go dead and he just blurts out heated compliments mindlessly in quick succession.
  • Famous Ancestor: Luina is descended from the hero who stopped the Harbringer's reign of terror. Her father was also one of the strongest hunters in the world until he was killed in battle. Unfortunately, Luina has inherited almost none of their power, but she does possess the Harbringer stone which can summon and control anything.
  • Fish out of Water: Anima at first, after he gets his uttermost wish of a loving wife and cute family. He has no idea how to react or treat them properly but learns fast.
  • Friend to All Children: Luina is this at the beginning. Anima wants to become this and does so as the story progresses.
  • Good Parents: Anima and Luina are this to Marie, Myuke, and, later, Bram.
  • Go Through Me: Anyone wanting Luina's Harbringer Stone or Luina herself will have to go through Anima. This is a very bad idea.
  • Horned Humanoid: Anima sports a pair of permanent devilish horns growing out of his head. His initial worries this would make people in his new world fear him is groundless as everyone just assumes his horns are sid-effects of him using a magic stone.
  • Invincible Hero: Anima was not only unbeatable on his native world but finds the supposed strongest creatures and warriors of Luina's world to be stupidly under-powered.
  • Involuntary Shapeshifting:
    • Luina has a fire drake magic stone that she can use to heat bathwater and fire up the cooking oven as well as other things. Because of how magic stones work in her world, she involuntarily grows a lizard tail whenever she does this as she takes on some of the characteristics of a fire drake.
    • People explain away Anima's permanent horns on his head as being this, possibly from using a Minotaur stone.
  • Lap Pillow: After observing the two orphan girls getting this from Luina, Anima learns, to his delight, that his loving wife will do this for him as well.
  • Like a Daughter to Me: Although Marie and Myuke are orphans, Anima and Luina consider them as if they were their own daughters.
  • Lighter and Softer: LN#2 shifts to a much friendlier and brighter depiction of Luina's world although still dangerous. The main villain is very much not what they appear.
  • Love at First Sight: Very much so for Anima and he says so. Luina is more reserved, although soon we see her POV in the story and it turns out it was true for her too the whole time.
  • Masochist's Meal: Anima literally eats a number of mud pies that Marie "cooks" for him to Luina's shock. He does so to make the little girl happy and, being well nigh indestructible inside and out, it doesn't hurt him at all.
  • Medieval European Fantasy: The main atmosphere of Luina's world and setting for the story. Somewhat darkened by having the world almost destroyed 300 years earlier by a world-destroying demon called The Harbringer.
  • Oh, Crap!: Luina especially has this reaction at the end of Volume 1. Anima kicks Lord Merkalt in dragon form when he attacks the family, obliterating him, an act that should make Anima public enemy #1. The events of LN#2 subvert this though.
  • One-Hit Kill: Anima does this in all his fights. It doesn't bother him although he's surprised how weak everything is in Luina's world.
  • Only Sane Man: Myuke is this especially in Volume 1 when she returns home to find her adoptive mother married to a strange man and her adoptive little sister calling him Daddy. At least in this case, her worries were groundless.
  • Papa Wolf: After he wins Marie and Myuke's love and earns the title of Daddy, Anima becomes this very much.
  • Protectorate: Anima declares Luina and the girls under his protection. This later is expanded to the entire kingdom that Luina lives in at the end of the second volume, and probably the world if the Harbringer ever returns.
  • Road Trip Plot: Light Novel #2 is this as Anima and family go on a quest and further to the capital for a meeting with the king.
  • Secret-Keeper: Luina tries to keep it secret that she holds The Harbringer Stone which can summon and control very powerful entities.
  • She Cleans Up Nicely: Luina is already attractive, especially to Anima, but after coming into some money and buying her new clothes to replace her poor rags, she becomes even more beautiful.
  • Slice of Life: The whole tone of scenes with Anima and his new family.
  • Team Mom: Luina was this to the children in her orphanage. Only two remain by the beginning of the story and Luina remains tireless in taking care of them.
  • Translator Microbes: Luina tells Anima that he can understand her world's language because of the summoning magic. It wouldn't be very useful if he couldn't understand commands after being summoned, after all.
  • Trapped in Another World: After being summoned, Luina tells Anima apologetically that she can't send him back. He can never go back to his world again. Anima doesn't mind as he was loathed by literally everyone back in his own world and he has fallen in love with Luina.
  • When You Coming Home, Dad?: What Anima wants to avoid above all other things. He even refuses the king's request that he replace Merkalt as the king's mercenary because it would take time from his family. Even if it was only a day or two every ten years, it is too much for Anima to even consider.
