The Story of the World is a four volume narrative history series for elementary students.

  • Assuming the Audience's Age: The narrator assumes the reader is six, since Romulus Augustus is said to have become an emperor when he was "just your age".
  • Crying Critters: The chapter on Caesar's death notes that the night before his execution, Caesar dreamt his horses were crying.
  • Historical Domain Character: As a narrative history series for kids, it naturally has a lot of historical figures in it.
  • Historical Fiction: A narrative history series for kids.
  • Psychic Dreams for Everyone: In the chapter discussing Caesar's death, it notes that before the death, he dreamt that his horses were crying and his wife dreamt that someone told her to tell him not to go to work.
  • Giant Food: Discussed. The chapter describing the fall of the Roman empire explains that the Roman empire was too big for the higher-ups to handle, making an analogy of owning a candy bar the size of a car in a group of very hungry people.
  • Plague Episode: One book has a chapter called "Plague and Fire", which describes the Black Death.
  • Nursery Rhyme: "Plague and Fire" discusses the urban legend that "Ring Around the Rosie" is about the Black Death.
  • Shout-Out: When the suffragettes are discussed, it notes that "If you've seen Mary Poppins, you may remember that Mrs. Banks is a suffragette".
  • White Horse: George Washington's mount is a white horse.
