"Hey, father. Look at me."

Deadly Sins of Evil: The Muzzle of Nemesis is a light novel written by mothy with accompanying illustrations by Ichika, released in 2017.

The story takes a deeper look into the life of Nemesis from the song of the same name, framed by glances into her memory from Levia, a psychiatric researcher who can perform the "Swap Technique, Mind Type"—a technique that allows one to experience pieces of someone else's life vicariously through their memories, though there are risks to the procedure. It jumps through multiple points in her history, detailing her downward spiral into the destructive madness that ends the Third Period.

The novel is largely set in an Evillious equivalent to World Wars I and II within the various countries involved in both conflicts, such as Elphegort (Germany), Levianta (Russia), Lucifenia (France), etc. Shots and flashbacks of Nemesis' life are interspersed with narrative commentary by Levia as she witness all of it at the behest of the mysterious Postman who brought a catatonic Nemesis into the research facility where she works one day.

The novel is preceded by Judgment Of Corruption.

The novel's website can be found here (note however that it’s all in Japanese), and it can be purchased on Amazon.

The Muzzle of Nemesis provides the following tropes:

  • A Nazi by Any Other Name: Nemesis as "fuhrer" of Elphegort (based explicitly on Germany), and the Tasan Party as a whole—an organization founded on the desire to combat a corrupt and incompetent government that led to the impoverishment of their country's native citizens, but getting swept up in ideological fervor that leads to further atrocities once actually in power. The only thing they're missing is the racial belief system.
  • Bungled Suicide: Nemesis tries to kill herself after shooting Nyoze, but it doesn't work because she's already a demon contractor.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • Levia states at several points that in performing the swap technique to view Nemesis' memories, she actually becomes Nemesis, even becoming confused about who she really is at points when there's an error with the Black box she's using. Then comes the reveal that she actually IS Nemesis...
    • When Levia asks Postman if he knows Nemesis, he says he knows her, but not Nemesis. Sure enough, Allen knew Elluka Clockworker, another of Levia's personas.
  • Exact Words: When Gumillia starts to say that Seth didn't do the job that she asked of him (that is, watching out for Nemesis), he points out that she specifically told him to keep her from dying. Sure enough—the entire Third Period has been destroyed, but Nemesis is, as promised, still alive.
  • Foregone Conclusion: Subverted. Though several details (like what happens with Nemesis' love, her actions as dictator of Elphegort, her meeting with Gallerian) are confirmed by songs and previous books in the series, the actual conclusion of the story deals with Levia realizing that she is Nemesis, and joining her friends in saving the world after having destroyed it.
  • In Love with the Mark: Nemesis and Nyoze, though she didn't know he was one of her targets at the time.
  • Never My Fault: Levia accuses Nemesis of having this mentality after viewing several of her memories. She goes through her life blaming everyone else for her mistakes and poor decisions, enraged at those who "betray" her without acknowledging that her behavior can count as betraying them first. Especially in the case of Nikolay, whose only crime was turning her in for literally murdering a boat-full of people. This eventually leads to her wanting to destroy the world, believing it responsible for her unhappiness.
  • Revolvers Are Just Better: Nemesis' Custom Naga .44 (said by Ichika to be based visually on a Colt Python), which she ends up using to fire her "Grim the End" bullets. She even says when receiving it that out of all the guns she's used, it's the best.
  • Snow Means Death: Nemesis shoots Nyoze in winter, and it snows after he dies.
  • Snow Means Love: Conversely, Nyoze proposes to her in the winter, and in the epilogue in the false memory Nyoze proposes to her on the day of a Christmas party that Nemesis is able to spend with all the people who have made an impact on her life.
  • Tomato in the Mirror: Levia coming to the realization that she, in fact, is Nemesis.
  • Wham Episode: In addition to dropping the reveal that Nemesis is Levia, there's also the bombshell that the Second Period is Earth, and the "gods" are scientists and researchers that lived there. Except not quite.
