Literature / The Floods

Go To

The Floods is a children's book series by author Colin Thompson about the misadventures of a family of Wizards and Witches.

The books provide examples of:

  • 0% Approval Rating: The Floods' human neighbors dislike and avoid them as much as they can except for Betty since she looks normal. The Dents also qualify as this due to them being horrible people. In fact the Dents are so hated in the neighborhood that when they disappear one by one the police search for them half-heartedly and nobody really cares.

  • All Women Are Lustful: Tracylene had several boyfriends at once.
  • '20s Bob Haircut: Betty sports one.
  • The Ace: Mordonna is said to be very smart, a wonderful cook and her beauty is said to be legendary across the galaxies.
  • Adaptational Attractiveness: There's another version of the first four books that are illustrated differently where most of the Floods look much better than in the original illustration.
  • Affably Evil: If one does not cross them, The Floods are very nice.
  • Annoying Younger Sibling: Dickie Dent.
  • Archnemesis Dad: King Quatorze.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Betty may be the nicest out of all the Floods but you seriously shouldn't cross her.
  • Brainy Baby: Winchflat won an award for one of his inventions when he was still a baby.
  • Bratty Half-Pint: Dickie Dent.
  • Bratty Teenage Daughter: Tracylene Dent.

  • Bullying a Dragon: Honestly, if you knew of a family like this, and were fully aware of what they do and how they do it, would you attempt to just be cordial, or would you antagonize them? Fortunately, most people prefer to avoid them and get away from them fast and yet politely as possible when they get too creeped out.
  • Child Prodigy: Winchflat.
  • Children Are Immortal: Averted. In "Good Neighbors" Dickie Dent is turned into a fridge and Tracylene is devoured by Mordonna's semi dead mother.
  • The Cutie: Betty.
  • Dating What Daddy Hates: Mordonna married Nerlin, who is a former "Dirt People", whom King Quatorze looked down upon.
  • Designer Babies: Nerlin and Mordonna's children were created in a laboratory with the sole exception of Betty, who was created "the same way as you and I".
  • Dude Magnet: Mordonna can get anyone to fall in love with her just by looking at her eyes.

  • Femme Fatale: Mordonna.
  • Foil: The Dents are this to the Floods. The Floods look scary they are a nice to their neighbors and love each other very much while the Dents look are normal humans but are horrible to everyone including each other.
    • The Hulberts also serve as a foil to both The Dents and The Floods as the Hulberts are nice and boring (they even think having fun and going on holidays is a sin that brings nothing but sadness) and dress in even more boring clothes. However, after meeting the Flood family they have loosened up consederably.
  • Friendless Background: Betty never had a real friend due to there not being any kids her age in her neighborhood and the kids at her school thinking she's a freak due to her school lunches that consist of lizards and frogs. In "Survivor/Witch Friend" Betty finds a friend in Ffiona, her new neighbor.
  • Getting Crap Past the Radar:
    • In "Good Neighbours" The Floods meet the Dents, a family that consists of a father who drinks and steals cars for a living, a mother who is addicted to TV and hits her children at stores to create a distraction so that she can steal cigarettes and there's their children Tracylene, their daughter who is a slutty teenager who dresses in skimpy outfits, shoplifts and has a new boyfriend everyday, whom she locks in the closet to keep them from running away and their son Dickie, who melts Barbie dolls in the microwave, urinates on people's forniture and bullies other children. When the Floods decide they have had enough of them they turn Dickie into a fridge, let Mordonna's mother devour Tracylene, turn Mrs. Dent into a TV and turn Mr. Dent into a vacuum cleaner.
    • In "Prime Suspect", when Mordonna tells Nerlin that she could turn him into a girl "with a couple of spells and a pair of scissors." Ouch.
  • Gilded Cage: Mordonna spent the first eighteen years of her life locked inside her father's castle until her father found a prince he considered worthy of her hand.
  • Girly Bruiser: Betty is a cute girl who dresses all in pink and pastel colors and skips a lot but is just as dangerous as her family.
  • Hair Decorations: Betty has a pigtail tied with a large pink ribbon. In her second design her hair is held back with a hairclip.
  • Happily Married: Mordonna and Nerlin.
  • Idiosyncratic Episode Naming: Every book in the novel series has a TV show title for its title. Many of them are the names of reality TV shows.
  • Lethal Chef: Betty and Ffiona.
  • No Name Given: Mr. Dent and Mrs. Dent's first names were never revealed.
  • Pink Means Feminine: Betty.
  • Princesses Prefer Pink: Betty is the princess of Transilvania Waters and loves pink.
  • Puppy Love: Both Morbid and Silent have a crush on Ffiona.
  • Really Gets Around: Tracylene had lots of boyfriends.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: King Quatorze is currently imprisioned in a rock.
  • Single-Minded Twins: Morbid and Silent.
  • Spoiled Sweet: Mordonna was given anything she wanted as a child and is very nice as well as a loving mother.
  • Teen Genius: Winchflat.
  • Teens Are Monsters: Tracylene Dent.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Blood for Valla.
  • The Unfavorite: Mordonna's sister Howler was this in their family due to her ugliness. King Quatorze allowed Howler to run free across the kingdom in hopes that someone would marry her and take her away.
  • Thicker Than Water: The Floods always stick together.
  • The Vamp: Mordonna.
  • World's Most Beautiful Woman: Mordonna was considered the most beautiful woman in her kingdom.
  • Would Hurt a Child: The Floods have no problem with hurting and even killing children.
