In 2018, two Sonic the Hedgehog children's storybooks were released: Sonic and the Tales of Deception and Sonic and the Tales of Terror, each carrying three original short Sonic stories. Deception is written by Jake Black and illustrated by Ian McGiny, and Terror is written by Kiel Phegley and illustrated by Sonic the Hedgehog (Archie Comics) regular Patrick Spaziante.

The stories of Deception focus on Sonic foiling regular evil plans by Doctor Eggman:

  • Not-So-Fantastic Journey: When Knuckles is invaded by roboticizing nanobots, Sonic must shrink himself down and travel into Knuckles' body to stop the nanobots before it's too late.
  • Fighting Shadow: When Sonic is Brainwashed by Eggman, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy recruit Shadow to help turn Sonic back normal.
  • Doppelgänger: A mysterious Sonic-lookalike claiming to be Sonic from the future helps prepare the team for a big battle, yet Sonic is suspicious.

The stories of Terror focus on Defanged Horrors tales Sonic-style:

  • Night of the Unliving: Sonic's friends have been transformed into zombies by an extraterrestrial object and Sonic must find a way to cure and transform them back.
  • Spook Forest: While Sonic and the gang are camping, Knuckles must team up with some ghosts to scare Eggman out of destroying the forest.
  • Hunt of the Werehog: Dark Gaia returns and Sonic is a werehog again. He enlists Tails for help in defeating Dark Gaia, but refuses Amy.
