Hunter And Moon Mysteries (Literature)
Hunter and Moon Mysteries is a series of Kid Detective/horror novels by Allan Frewin Jones, written in the late 1990s.

The series revolve around a duo of young detectives, Elizabeth "Beth" Hunter and her friend Harrison "Hal" Moon, investigating a number of mysterious occurences that may or may not be supernatural. Beth is Agent Mulder, always eager to believe in the paranormal, while Hal is Agent Scully who always insists that there has to be a rational explanation.

The series consist of the following novels:

  1. The Weird Eyes File
  2. The Alien Fire File
  3. The Skull Stone File
  4. The Time Traveller File
  5. The Thunderbolt File
  6. The Starship File

The novels provide examples of:

  • Badass Biker: Hal's brother Joe is one, which makes him the subject of Beth's admiration.
  • Bittersweet Ending:
    • In The Time Traveller File, the enigmatic young man who claimed to be a time traveler from the future sacrifices himself and gives himself in to The Men in Black who were pursuing him to save Beth. His fate is left unknown.
    • In The Thunderbolt File, Beth's favourite school teacher, who was presumed dead, is found alive and well, having faked her death to escape a killer on her trail. However, she has to once again go into hiding to save her life, so Beth loses touch with her again.
  • Came from the Sky: In The Thunderbolt File, Beth finds a meteor which she suspects has paranormal properties, and is causing weather anomalies. It's never clarified whether or not this is the case.
  • Cool Old Lady: Beth has a eccentric grandma who is an immigrant from Romania, and knows plenty of exotic fairy tales.
  • Creepy Doll: In The Weird Eyes File, the storyline revolves around an antique doll which is strongly implied to be sentient, and has the uncanny power of hypnotizing people so that they don't want to give it away.

It turns out that the teacher faked her death as a part of a Witness Protection program to escape a killer who had been after her because she stood in court as a witness against an Evil, Inc. corporation.
  • Good All Along: In The Alien Fire File, the "alien woman" who attacked Beth is actually a disguised eco-activist investigating the dumping of toxic waste.
  • Humans Are the Real Monsters: In The Starship File, the aliens are actually the good guys, and the real antagonist is a Corrupt Corporate Executive who wants to get his hands on their starship's technologies.
  • Like Father, Unlike Son: Beth, who loves fairy tales and supernatural, has a very down-to-earth mom who works in the police, while Hal's mother is an Eccentric Artist who is into New Age and meditation.
  • MacGuffin: In The Weird Eyes File, the story revolves around a valuable antique doll.
  • The Men in Black: In The Time Traveller File, Beth and Hal meet a mysterious young man who claims that he came from the future, and who's chased by menacing men in black who he says are policemen from the future.
  • Mistaken for Aliens: In The Alien Fire File, it turns out that the "alien astronauts" that Beth saw were actually humans in Hazmat Suits dumping toxic waste, and the "alien woman" that attacked Beth was actually a disguised eco-activist investigating the dumping.
  • Returning Big Bad: The Corrupt Corporate Executive, who was the main antagonist in The Alien Fire File, makes a return in The Starship File.
  • Tragic Time Traveler: The Time Traveller File revolves around a mysterious young man who claims to be a time traveler from the future, and is pursued by The Men in Black who he says are policemen from the future. Eventually he sacrifices himself and surrenders to them to save Beth, and his fate is left unknown.
