Heather Has Two Mommies, by Lesléa Newman and illustrated by Diana Souza, is a 1989 picture book about a little girl named Heather who Has Two Mommies.
It' has a simple narrative explaining Heather's family. Heather has two mothers: Mama Kate and Mama Jane. Mama Kate is a doctor and Mama Jane is a carpenter. The book tells the things Heather likes to do with her parents. Early in the book, Heather begins going to school. At school she has a lot of fun and draws a picture of her mommies. The book ends with Heather's family heading home after her first day of school.
Heather Has Two Mommies is one of the earliest children's works featuring same-gender parents. It is one of the top banned books but has paved the way for numerous other works.
This book provides examples of:
- Bowdlerise: In the original version of the book, it's explained that Heather was born when Kate was artificially inseminated. This is left out of many re-releases of the book.
