A 1987 Star Trek: The Original Series novel by Carmen Carter that has McCoy suffering from amnesia after an injury and Kirk's struggle to help his friend recover his memories as they deal with a new enemy that he cannot understand. The job becomes harder without his old friend by his side as the man he knew is replaced with a stranger with no memory of starfleet or his family.
It was published by Pocket Books on May 1987.
Tropes for the novel:
- Amnesia Episode: McCoy reverts to his younger self after suffering an injury during an attack and only regains after Spock is seriously injured and in need of life saving surgery.
- Heroic BSoD: McCoy was already suffering from this before his memory loss, as He was getting drunk after getting a message that his ex-wife was getting remarried.
- When McCoy acts as his younger self, he sees his older self as a failure as he is divorced and barely talks to his daughter and doesn't see why he would want to regain those memories.
- Trauma-Induced Amnesia: McCoy's injury was mostly minor but he still loses twenty years of his life as He was getting drunk when he got the before mentioned message from his ex-wife.
