Literature / Broken Love Series

Go To

A series following a group of damaged high school students struggling with feelings of love. The first two books tell the story of Lake Monroe and Keiran Masters. They met when they were children and Keiran became a rather dark version of a pigtail puller. At the beginning Keiran had been in juvie for a year for a crime he did not commit and thinks that Lake set him up. He is determined to get his revenge by 'ruining' her.

This series provides examples of:

  • Abusive Parents: Mitch Masters, Kieran's and Keenan's father actually sold Kieran into slavery and nearly murdered Keenan. Also Mario Fulton who has been pimping out his daughter Diana since she was in elementary school. The Chambers are awful parents as well although not to Mitch's degree. Mrs. Chambers is obsessed with appearances and worries more about money than her granddaughter's kidnapping, fails to emotionally support her daughter in a difficult time. Cale Chambers tried to force his son to marry a woman he does not care for.

  • Alpha Bitch: Anya.
  • Awful Truth: Keiran's past. The mystery of Sophia Blackwood-Masters. What happened to the Monroes.
  • Beauty Is Bad: Practically any named male character described as good looking is a jerk, Jesse being an exception.
  • Beta Couple: Keenan and Sheldon. Dash and Willow.
  • Broken Bird: Keiran because of his horrible childhood. Lake because of Keiran's bullying. Keenan after he finds out a few harsh truths. Sheldon after she catches Keenan with the new teacher.
  • Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: Keiran's and Lake's dynamic. He had a platonic version with Lily when they were children.
  • Casual Kink: Keiran spanks Lake on two separate occasions and often ties her hands with his belt. It is implied that Keenan and Sheldon enjoy it as well.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Anya and Rosalyn.
  • Cool Loser: Lake and Willow.

  • Crazy Jealous Guy: Keiran goes nuts if anyone as much as looks at Lake. When Lake needs to distract him from making a perfect score at bowling she pretends to admire another guy. Same goes for Dash toward Willow.
  • Destructive Romance: All the three portrayed couples qualify. The series is not called Broken Love for nothing.
  • Disappeared Dad: Mitch Masters, unfortunately he does not stay that way. John Masters also is away most of the year, causing Keiran and Keenan to be unsupervised and get up to no good. Mr. Monroe, Lake's father and his wife have been missing for nearly ten years.
  • Everyone Can See It: Everyone knows that Keiran Masters is obsessed with Lake Monroe, except her.
  • Fiery Redhead: Willow.
  • Freaky Fashion, Mild Mind: Willow. Her textile creations might get wild but she herself is a very down to earth girl.
  • Gray Eyes: Keiran and Keenan.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Anya toward Lake. Trevor toward Keiran.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Lily and Lake.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: Lake and Lily.
  • Ironic Name: Keenan means wise, something he most certainly is not.
  • Lima Syndrome: One explanation for
  • Lovable Alpha Bitch: Sheldon is very popular, in the cheerleading squad and yet she is a very kind girld who becomes good friends with the unpopular Lake and Willow.
  • Parents as People: John Masters is an absentee parent but he is dealing with a lot of guilt over Keiran's childhood, Sophia's disappearance and the stress of keeping Mitch away. Keiran and Keenan do not make it easy either, with their propensity to get into trouble. Lake's Aunt Carissa has not noticed that her niece has been horribly bullied for a decade. Willow's mother Mrs. Waters is rather indifferent to her children particularly her daughter in favor to looking after her husband, but she was impregnated and abandoned. Likely feels grateful to Mr. Waters for accepting her and another man's child.
  • Property of Love: What the boys want the girls to be. Too bad for them the gals are a bit too strong minded.
  • Oblivious to Love: It takes Lake quite a while to realize what everyone knows. That Keiran has a thing for her.
  • Questionable Consent: How Keiran's and Lake's sexual relationship begins. He likely would have not touched her had she said no but she never felt like she could refuse. In Breaking Love he admits to Willow that what he did to Lake was rape.
  • Made a Slave: Keiran since he was a baby.
  • Manly Gay: Quentin and Jesse. Keiran is flabbergasted when he finds out.
  • Meaningful Name: Keiran means black or dark. Perfect for this brooding bad boy with a dark and tormented past.
  • Missing Mom: Sophia Blackwood. Keiran and Keenan's mother. Mrs. Monroe, Lake's mother.
  • No Periods, Period: Lake is never shown menstruating but she and Sheldon do have a conversation about their periods much to Keenan's disgust.
  • Really Gets Around: Keenan is quite the man whore much to Sheldon's distress.
  • Rich Bitch: Melissa Chambers full stop. Also Rosalyn.
  • Savvy Guy, Energetic Girl: Dash and Willow.
  • Stockholm Syndrome: One explanation for Lake's feelings for Keiran, other than him being hot like burning.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: The Masters men but expecially Keiran.
  • Title Drop: Lake questions Keiran if their Broken Love can endure.
  • Too Good for This Sinful Earth: Poor Lily. Sophia has shades of this as well.
  • Troubled, but Cute: Keiran and Keenan.
  • Would Not Hit a Girl: Keiran might have made Lake's life a misery but he never has hit her. Neither Keenan or Dash would dream of hitting a girl. Trevor nearly gets murdered by Keiran when he hits Lake.
