"Haidoo, everyone! Welcome to the Nerd Castle!"

Splattercat Gaming, or simply Splattercat or Matt, is a Let's Player who began making gaming videos in 16th Dec 2012. He lives in East Bay, California with his wife (Twitch streamer Mumbalina) and studied geology and palaeontology in college but now works as a full-time YouTube personality and also dabbles in voice acting, music production, broadcasting and other performance arts. As the name suggests, Splatter is a feline enthusiast and full-time kitty slave (in his own words). He grew up in a religious family and has Hawaiian ancestry and he is known for spontaneously breaking out into song during his gameplay, in various genres including metal and rap.

Splattercat focuses on PC gaming, and though he does release the occasional triple-A title playthrough, his main selling point against other LPers is that he primarily specialises in playthroughs for indie titles on Steam, and enthusiastically supports up-and-coming developers. He even runs a series every Friday, "W.I.N - Weekly Indie Newcomer", which showcases a Steam indie title, usually in alpha or beta stage. Splatter mostly does LPs for survival games, roguelike open sandbox games, role-playing games, real-time strategy games, and horror games.

As of writing, Splattercat Gaming has over 467,000 subscribers, a number which continues to grow.

He also maintains a Twitch channel, which he has grown increasingly active on.

This gamer provides examples of:

  • Author Appeal: Splattercat grew up near a prison, hence he possesses a surprising amount of knowledge on prison life and this enthusiasm is reflected in his LPs of Prison Architect and The Escapists. Also, being a geologist, he spends a great deal of time out in the wilderness, and so knows a thing or two about wilderness survival techniques, which comes across in his LPs of survival games.
    • Splatter is a huge fan of tabletop gaming, especially Warhammer 40,000 and Shadowrun.
    • Cats, obviously.
    • He generally has a thing for orcs and zombies.
    • He's also a real sucker for the dark-haired ladies. Again, amusingly, his own words.
  • Atrocious Alias: Intentionally gives these to his player characters. Examples include "Noodles McFlapjaw" (his female character in Project Zomboid), "Mad Dog McGriddle" (his female character in Mount & Blade) and "Billabong Brewsky" (his male character in Jagged Alliance: Flashback). Somehow, he always manages to keep a straight face as he reads them out.

  • Bash Brothers: With Blitzkriegsler.
Sooner or later, like, we're gonna be like a couple, where we end each other's sentences, and it'll be adorable.
  • Big "NO!": His "How to be an Interloper" series comes to an abrupt end in the 18th episode when a wolf blindsides him and mauls him to death. His reaction is a slow-mo "Noooooooo!" accompanied to the sound of Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On".
  • Catchphrase: "Haidoo!", from his Craft the World Let's Play.
"I was thinking about that today, as I walked across campus, how awesome would it be if in Dwarven culture, their greeting was the same as their battlecry? Like meeting each other, they'd be like 'Haidoo!' and then charging at enemies, they'd be like 'HAIDOO!' That'd be the hallmark of a badass culture."
  • Deadpan Snarker
  • Early Installment Weirdness: He never originally planned to do LPs for indie games. He started out doing tutorials for Towns and a LP for Dead Space. There's also the inevitable jump in quality you can expect from an LPer, both in recording consistency, and in the voice-over.
  • Fan Community Nicknames: Collectively known as "The Nerd Castle".
  • Kindhearted Cat Lover
  • Long Runner: His Mount & Blade LP is easily the largest and most ambitious LP he's done, going on for over 100 half-hour episodes.
  • Motor Mouth: A criticism of his commentary is that he talks far too fast.
  • Nice Guy: He always puts his viewers first. Any time something goes wrong with a video or he can't make an episode due to personal business, he apologises profusely. Bless. He also maintains a professional, affable attitude throughout his commentary, which he attributes to his background working in radio.
  • Pungeon Master: In his commentary, and in the titles of his videos.
  • Running Gag: Wood jokes. Usually comes up once per series.
  • Screw You, Elves!: Downplayed. He never passes up an opportunity to snark at elves when they appear in a fantasy game he's playing.
  • Sir Swears-a-Lot: Defied. Splattercat admits openly to being rather foul-mouthed in real life, but rarely swears in his own commentary as he's aware of the stereotype of Let's Players. He occasionally drops a swear, though, especially if the game is a horror title.
  • The Stoic: Although Not So Stoic comes up occasionally as well. See above.
  • Title Drop: Often, the title of an episode will take over from a line in his commentary.
  • Troll: He relates with giddy nostalgia purposely dicking around with customers during his stint working at Blockbuster.
  • With Catlike Tread: By his own admission, he usually plays as "warrior" classes, which means when he's in control of a sneaky thief, he's... not the stealthiest person in the world.

"And I think here I'll break off the episode. Thank you for joining me for another episode of <insert game here>. I look forward to seeing you in the next episode. Take care and haidoo!"
