  • December 24: The Tenth Doctor meets "The Next Doctor" and discovers a Cyberman plot. (Doctor Who)
  • December 25: The Tenth Doctor and another Doctor more defeat an attack by time- and dimension-travelling Cybermen. (Doctor Who)
  • In Madrid, Duncan MacLeod studies swordsmanship under immortal Otavio Consone. The two compete for the attentions of local heiress Theresa del Gloria and end up duelling. Otavio wins, but Theresa agrees to marry him in exchange for sparing Duncan's life. She later commits suicide to escape her unhappy marriage. (Highlander)
  • Around this time, Brand's father dies, and he is witness to his mother's callous robbery of the deathbed. Soon after this, Brand leaves, not to return for ten years. (Brand)
  • Esther Summerson leaves her school to take up residence and occupation at her guardian John Jarndyce's manor, called "Bleak House". She meets and befriends two young wards in the Jarndyce vs Jarndyce case, Richard Carstone and Ada Clare. The two wards quickly fall in love. (Bleak House)

  • June 10: Dan Morgan is sentenced to 12 years hard labour for highway robbery. (Real Life and Mad Dog Morgan)
  • In San Francisco, Duncan MacLeod reunites with Brian Cullen, who has lost his nerve in the meantime. They check into an opium den, where Cullen's drug addiction starts. (Highlander)
  • Peabody and Sherman track down the Light Brigade from all over the world, and bring them back to the Crimean peninsula so they can charge as planned. (Rocky and Bullwinkle)
  • Peabody and Sherman recover Florence Nightingale's lamp oil from the Russian army that stole it. (Rocky and Bullwinkle)
  • Sherlock Holmes is born. (Sherlock Holmes)
  • On Hoff in the Pegasus galaxy, a team led by Farrol Mylan attempts to perfect a drug which they hope can be used as a defense against the Wraith and save future generations from being fed upon. When the planet is culled by the Wraith, 10,000 soldiers give their lives so that the scientists can have additional time to work on the drug. Mylan and his team are killed but his journals and details of his experiments survive. This allows the Hoffans to perfect the drug with the help of Dr. Carson Beckett of the Atlantis expedition in 2004. (Stargate Atlantis)
  • In the Pegasus galaxy, the Wraith enter an hibernation cycle from which they would be prematurely awakened by Major John Sheppard in 2004. (Stargate Atlantis)

  • The American Civil War comes to an end when the Union defeats the Confederacy of North America. John Brown is hanged as a war criminal. (Alternate Presidents)

  • November 4:
    • James Buchanan defeats John C. Frémont and Millard Fillmore in the U.S. presidential election. (Real Life)
    • Former U.S. President Millard Fillmore is elected to a term in his own right, defeating John C. Frémont, after James Buchanan dies of a stroke. (Alternate Presidents)
  • The Second Galactic Civil War emerges out of the Corellian Independence movement and the conversion of Jedi Jacen Solo into the Sith Lord Darth Caedus. Destruction of Centerpoint Station. (Star Wars: Legacy of the Force)

  • January 12: Horatio Hornblower dies. (Horatio Hornblower)
  • Summer: The Great Stink of London occurs when the River Thames turns toxic due to human effluence and industrial waste being dumped in it. Father Thames abandons London and moves his influence to the Upper Thames valley, leaving the river's tidal reaches without a guiding spirit until 1957. (Rivers of London)
  • Birth of Catherine Callan in Ulster. (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)
  • After almost two years of U.S. President Millard Fillmore's brutal enforcement of the fugitive slave laws and suppression of riots in free states, the northern states form the New England Confederacy, with John C. Frémont as its President, and declare war on the Union. (Alternate Presidents)
  • P. T. Russell publishes the first and only edition of his Compendium of Birds. (S.)

  • April 3: Peabody and Sherman are present at the founding of the Pony Express, and carry 1/51 of a message from Missouri to Sacramento. (Rocky and Bullwinkle)
  • April 10: The time travelers Phineas Bogg and Jeffrey Jones help the 14-year-old Buffalo Bill Cody, a rider with the Pony Express, escape from bandits using a 1941 motorcycle. (Voyagers!)
  • April 22: Mabel Simpson and her family's former slave Virgil escape along the Underground Railway to Canada. They later have a son named Abraham Simpson, the great-grandfather of the World War II veteran of the same name. (The Simpsons)
  • June: Dan Morgan is released from prison for good behaviour, and promptly vanishes. (Real Life and Mad Dog Morgan)
  • August 2: Jefferson Hope, John Ferrier, and his adopted daughter Lucy begin their flight from Salt Lake City, attempting to flee Utah entirely. (A Study in Scarlet)
  • August 4: John and Lucy are accosted by the Danite Band. John is killed, and Lucy is forcibly taken back to Salt Lake City. Jefferson Hope, who had been away hunting, discovers this only hours too late. (A Study in Scarlet)
  • August 9: Lucy Ferrier is married against her will to Enoch Drebber. (A Study in Scarlet)
  • September: Lucy Ferrier dies. Drebber does not grieve. (A Study in Scarlet)
  • November 6:
  • Ronin Kuwabatake Sanjuro wanders into a small Japanese village in the middle of a gang war, and plays both sides into destroying each other. (Yojimbo).
  • Louis and Claudia try and fail to kill Lestat, and flee to Paris. There, they meet the Theater of the Vampires and Armand. more (Interview with the Vampire)
  • Angelus drives Drusilla crazy, then turns her into a vampire. (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)
  • Birth of Oro in Japan. He would migrate to Brazil in his 50s and spend most of his life as a hermit, using that time to master Senjutsu. (Street Fighter III)
  • Death of Xiaoqin. Agatha Primrose becomes the Slayer. (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)
  • William Channing Webb, professor of Anthropology at Princeton University, encounters a tribe of Eskimos who worship Cthulhu. (The Call of Cthulhu)
  • In Polly Spark's altered version of history, Dr. Bug-Bot persuades Florence Nightingale to feed cake and ice cream to her patients. (JumpStart Adventures 3rd Grade: Mystery Mountain)
  • Cain falls in love with the human Colette around this time. Although she forgives him for the evil deeds he did prior to meeting her, she makes him promise not to kill anymore. He agrees and retires to live with Colette as a married couple. (Supernatural)

  • Eliza Harris escapes to freedom by crossing the Ohio River on ice floes. Topsy grows like Topsy. Little Eva is stricken by tuberculosis. Uncle Tom is killed by the cruel slave master Simon Legree.Justification (Uncle Tom's Cabin)
  • On Tegalus, the Stargate, known as the Great Ring of Avidan, is discovered in the Rand Protectorate. Many people in both that country and the Caledonian Federation come to believe that it was created by ancient worshippers to honor their gods, namely the Goa'uld, and that the glyphs on the Gate are the names of these gods.   • Well-known Parisian courtesan Violetta Valéry abandons her life of meaningless parties after finding real romance in Alberto Germont. However, complications of Alberto's family and Violetta's Victorian Novel Disease mean their love is doomed to tragedy. (La Traviata)

Pre-1861 (Exact year uncertain)

  • The Vigilante, betrayed along with the rest of the Seven Soldiers of Victory by The Spider, is sent back in time to the antebellum Old West, where he has been captured by a hostile tribe of Native Americans. Johnny Thunder, Black Canary, and the Green Arrow of Earth-1 go back in time top save him. Later it would be ret-conned that Vig actually spent around two decades in this era rather than the relatively swift rescue he received (from his point of view) in the original version. (DC Comics)

  • Before April 2: Kizzy Reynolds dies. (Roots)
  • April 2: After 20 years in England, Chicken George Moore returns to the United States a free man, having bought his freedom from his former master (and father) Tom Moore. He is the first member of his family to be free since his grandfather Kunta Kinte was captured in the Gambia in 1767. (Roots)
  • April 12:
    • American Civil War launches with Confederates bombing Union-held Fort Sumter in Charleston, South Carolina. (Real Life)
    • During a barbecue at Twelve Oaks plantation, Scarlett O'Hara confesses her love to Ashley Wilkes, but he is marrying his cousin Melanie Hamilton. The barbecue is disrupted by the announcement that war has broken out. (Gone with the Wind)
    • Virginia "Virgie" Cary's sixth birthday party is disrupted by the outbreak of war. (The Littlest Rebel)
    • When he receives word that the war has begun, Evan Brent proudly boasts that the Confederacy will "whup them Yankees." (Roots)
    • Chicken George Moore is forced to leave North Carolina due to a state law which states that any freedman will become a slave again if he spends more than 60 days in the state. He eventually returns in 1870. (Roots)
  • April 29: Maryland secedes from the USA and joins the Confederacy. (Chrononauts)
  • Brand, an unemployed chaplain, returns to his hometown in western Norway and causes a stir with his controversial views and badass attitudes. He gains a girlfriend, Agnes, and has to face off his mother. The two of them does not part well. Brand eventually takes the calling and becomes a priest in the community. (Brand)
  • Sam is born. (Journey into Space)
  • Daniel Covington is killed in the American Civil War. (Quantum Leap)
  • Slavery comes to an end in the United States when President Stephen Douglas introduces the Civil Rights Act of 1861. (Alternate Presidents)
  • Hanten Shiranui and Najimi Ajimu, the only Not Equals in existence, meet and join forces. (Medaka Box)
  • Death of Sarah Morriss nee Mitchell. (Real Life, The Beale Papers)

1862

  • January 15: George B. McClellan is visited in the night by the spirit of George Washington, who warns him that a traitor has leaked vital information to the Confederates. The following day McClellan wins a decisive battle, preventing the Confederacy from taking Washington, D.C. (“General McClellan’s Dream”)
  • April 12:
    • A group of Union soldiers volunteer to steal a Confederate train in Atlanta and take it north to Tennessee. (Real Life, The Great Locomotive Chase)
    • Johnnie Gray pursues the Union soldiers who stole his locomotive, The General, and kidnapped his fiancée, Annabelle Lee. (The General)
  • April 18-May 23: Dr. Fergusson and his companions fly a balloon across Africa. (Five Weeks in a Balloon)
  • April 18: Confederate troops capture U.S. President Abraham Lincoln. The time travelers Jeffrey Jones and Phineas Bogg are later able to set history back on its proper course. (Voyagers!)
  • August 28-30: The Confederacy defeats the Union in the Second Battle of Bull Run in Prince William County, Virginia. (Real Life) Douger fights in the battle and is haunted by the experience. (The Twilight Zone (1959))
  • September 10:
    • A Confederate soldier manages to recover Special Order 191, narrowly avoiding handing the enemy the CSA's battle plans. (Timeline-191)
    • A group of time travelers (plus escaped slave Jim from a parallel timeline) steal Special Order 191, causing the South to lose the American Civil War. (Chrononauts)
  • September 20:
    • Due to a genetic quirk, Sam Beckett leaps 91 years outside of his own lifetime and into his great-grandfather John Beckett, a captain in the Union Army. Sam saves his own family tree and that of someone famous (Quantum Leap)
    • With the Union unable to predict their bold manoeuvering, Confederate troops march into Pennsylvania, pursued by the Union Army. (Chrononauts)
  • September: The Union army is crushed at the Battle of Camp Hill and Pennsylvania and Kentucky are occupied by the Confederacy. (Timeline-191)
  • November 4: British and French ambassadors formally recognize the Confederate States of America, and the War of Secession ends. (Timeline-191)
  • November: Arthur Denison and his son Will are both shipwrecked on the island of Dinotopia. (Dinotopia)
  • Duncan MacLeod becomes an abolitionist and joined the Underground Railroad. He meets Sean Zale, a lad who became immortal at a young age, and entrusts him to a mortal woman. Sean is soon killed by another immortal. (Highlander)
  • Death of Agatha Primrose. Pauline Francis Bernard becomes the Slayer. (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)
  • Col. Rhett Butler of Charleston, South Carolina becomes a highly successful and famous blockade runner. (Gone with the Wind)
  • In northern Alabama, the slave owner Peyton Farquhar is hanged by Union soldiers. ("An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge")
  • U.S. President Stephen Douglas attempts to reach a compromise over slavery by introducing the Manumission Act 1862, which is intended to free the slaves over ten years. However, the southern states reject it, form the Confederacy and declare war on the ill-prepared Union. Shortly afterwards, the Confederacy is recognized by the British Empire and the other European powers and begins to receive support from them. (Alternate Presidents)
  • Robert Morriss entrusts J. B. Ward with the papers and affects left to him by Thomas Beale. (The Beale Papers)
  • Aziraphale and Crowley meet at St. James Park in London, where Crowley asks for some holy water. Since holy water would destroy Crowley, Aziraphale objects, and the two have an argument. (Good Omens (2019))

  • The Northwest family hires the lumberjacks of Gravity Falls to build their mansion. They promise to throw an annual party at which all will be welcome. (Gravity Falls)

  • January 1: President Abraham Lincoln signs the Emancipation Proclamation, making slavery illegal. Ending slavery now becomes a distinct goal of the Civil War. (Real Life) John Henry is one of millions of new freemen. (John Henry)
  • June:
  • July 1-3:
    • The Battle of Gettysburg is fought in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. It is a major turning point in the American Civil War. (Real Life) Casualties of the battle include Brent and Stuart Tarleton (Gone with the Wind) and Charlie Constable (The Twilight Zone (1959)).
    • Nicholas Prentice transports Andy Larouche and Vince Chance back in time to experience the battle firsthand. (The Outer Limits (1995))
    • Private Atticus Kent, who possesses powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal men, single-handedly wins the Battle of Gettysburg and the war for the Union. (Superman: A Nation Divided)
    • The Confederacy wins the Battle of Gettysburg, paving the way for its victory in the War of Southron Independence one year later. (Bring the Jubilee)
  • July 11: In the preceding months Amsterdam Vallon resurrected the Dead Rabbits to challenge Bill the Butcher and The Natives for control over the Five Points once again. Their battle, however, is violently interrupted by the outbreak of the New York Draft Riots, leaving no real victor. (Gangs of New York)
  • Summer: Gravity Falls is founded by Nathaniel Northwest. (Gravity Falls).
  • July or August: The Northwest family mansion is completed. On the day of the inaugural party, Nathaniel Northwest excludes the common folk from attending. Many of the lumberjacks die in a musdlide; their patriarch, Archibald Corduroy, in his final breath vows to return in 150 years for revenge unless commoners are allowed into the mansion.   • August: Atticus Kent prevents U.S. President Abraham Lincoln from being assassinated by the actor John Wilkes Booth in Ford's Theatre. Booth is killed when he falls on his dagger. (Superman: A Nation Divided)
  • November 19:
    • U.S. President Abraham Lincoln delivers the Gettysburg Address. (Real Life)
    • The time travelers Phineas Bogg and Jeffrey Jones are in attendance. (Voyagers!)
    • The First Doctor and his companions Ian Chesterton, Barbara Wright and Vicki Pallister watch Lincoln delivering the address using the Time-Space Visualiser. (Doctor Who)
    • Phineas Bogg and Jeffrey Jones discover that the Union is losing the American Civil War as President Lincoln was captured by the Confederacy on April 18, 1862. (Voyagers!)
  • November 23: Edith Waterfield dies of pneumonia. (Doctor Who Expanded Universe)
  • Confederate general Robert E. Lee is given a vast arsenal of AK-47s by time-traveling South Africans from 2015 who want a future ally in support of Apartheid. (The Guns of the South)
  • The Skagarans abduct several thousand humans as slaves on their home planet, but the humans, led by Cooper Smith, rebel and turn the Skagarans into the slaves. The colony world continues resembling the Old West at least to the 22nd century. (Star Trek: Enterprise)
  • Duncan MacLeod is arrested while smuggling slaves out of Tennessee. He is hanged and buried, but rescued by the honourable Lucas Desiree, an immortal captain in the Confederate Army. The two part on friendly terms. (Highlander)
  • Robert E.O. Speedwagon is born, and the hamon master Tonpetty takes William A. Zeppeli in as his apprentice. (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure)
  • Peabody and Sherman stop Alfred Nobel from blowing up himself, or the engineers who come to inspect his work. (Rocky and Bullwinkle)
  • Bill and Ted abduct Abraham Lincoln with the help of Genghis Khan, bringing him to the year 1988 for their history report. (Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure)
  • The Knights of Hell abduct Colette and attempt to persuade Cain to return to being their leader. This tactic proves fatal when Cain kills them instead. When he tracks Colette down, he finds her possessed by Abaddon, who tricks him into killing Colette. Cain honors Colette's dying wish for him not to kill anymore, and so Abaddon is spared his revenge, making her the only Knight of Hell who remains alive and active. (Supernatural)

  • Satanist Bathsheba Sherman attempts to sacrifice her baby. Before killing herself to avoid arrest, she curses anybody who occupies her land to be subject to her torment. (The Conjuring)
  • General Abraham Lincoln of the 33rd Illinois Militia leads a charge which prevents the Confederacy from breaking the Illinois lines, buying the Union much needed time to regroup, but is killed in the process. (Alternate Presidents)

  • April 12: The Confederacy defeats the Union in the Battle of Fort Pillow in Lauderdale County, Tennessee. Confederate soldiers under the command of General Nathan Bedford Forrest massacre African-American soldiers and their white officers. (Real Life) Chicken George Moore is among the survivors.   • May 11: The Union defeats the Confederacy in the Battle of Yellow Tavern in Kentucky. Confederate General Jeb Stuart is mortally wounded and dies the next day. (Real Life) Jud Godwin is also killed in the battle. (The Twilight Zone (1959))
  • June: The Battle of Pine Mountain is fought in Georgia. Colonel Thaddius Riker, nicknamed "Old Iron Boots", serves as leader of the 102nd New York Infantry. Riker is wounded during the battle but saved by a member of the Q Continuum as Riker's descendant, William Thomas Riker, had been deemed significant by the Continuum. (Star Trek: Voyager)
  • July 22: The crew of the Duncan, Lord Edward Glenarvan's yacht, find a message in a bottle from the shipwrecked captain Harry Grant. (In Search of the Castaways)
  • August 10: Peabody and Sherman foil a Confederate spy, allowing General William Tecumsah Sherman (no relation?) to get across a bridge on his march through Georgia. (Rocky and Bullwinkle)
  • August 25: The Duncan sets out towards South America in hopes of rescuing captain Grant. (In Search of the Castaways)
  • September 1: With Atlanta about to fall to the Union, Confederate forces set fire to warehouses and freight cars loaded with war materials in order to prevent said war materials from falling into the hands of General Sherman's army. (Real Life) Scarlett O'Hara, Rhett Butler, Melanie Hamilton, an annoying black stereotype called "Prissy", and Melanie's newborn baby Beau make a daring escape through the conflagration. Scarlett's mother Ellen dies. (Gone with the Wind)
  • September 11: A 2,000-year-old immortal man, calling himself Major Hugh Skelton, participates in the Burning of Atlanta as a member of the 123rd Illinois Infantry. He does so reluctantly as he believes that General William Tecumseh Sherman's suppression of the Confederates is too brutal. (The Twilight Zone (1959))
  • November 8:
    • Abraham Lincoln is re-elected U.S. President, defeating George B. McClellan. (Real Life and Lincoln)
    • Abraham Lincoln loses the U.S. presidential election to Horatio Seymour. (The Guns of the South)
    • Abraham Lincoln wins the U.S. presidential election by just 2 votes as the Confederate Army begins to surround Washington. (Chrononauts)
    • Abraham Lincoln loses the U.S. presidential election as a result of the Confederate States' victory in the War of Secession. (Timeline-191)
  • November 12 - 15: The Burning of Atlanta by General Sherman's Union army. (Real Life) Contrary to popular belief, not depicted in Gone with the Wind (see above).
  • Christmas: Agnes, the wife of the priest Brand, succumbs to a broken heart after giving away all of her dead son's clothes to a beggar woman's frozen child. (Brand)
  • Duncan MacLeod is arrested while smuggling slaves out of Georgia. He and his latest charge Jeffrey are transported to Camp Sumter, a Confederate Prisoner-of-war camp located at Andersonville. When Jeffrey contracts gangrene, Duncan has to mercy kill him; he then vows vengeance on the prison's commander, William Everett Culbraith, who happens to be a fellow immortal. (Highlander)
  • Bra'tac is born, probably on the planet Chulak. (Stargate SG-1)
  • Death of Pauline Francis Bernard. Lucy Hanover becomes the Slayer. (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)
  • Kevin Corcoran returns to New York from the Civil War, finding that his daughter has died and his wife is missing. He then joins the New York Police Department as a detective. (Copper)
  • Peer Gynt returns to Norway after many years, survives a shipwreck barely, and comes to his home area on foot, penniless, and unknown. He finally reunites with Solveig who still waits for him in his old cabin, and she consoles him while he passes away, not quite sure what he actually made out of his life. (Peer Gynt)
  • A series of temporal duplicates of Frankenstein's Monster are dropped in the middle of the American Civil War. (Army of Frankensteins)

  • At the Battle of Scarlett Meadows, Confederate General Quincy Harris successfully repels an attack by Union forces. (Red Dead Redemption 2)

1865

  • March 8: Captain Harry Grant is rescued. (In Search of the Castaways)
  • March: After the Confederate deserter Jimmy Grant attempts to rape Irene Harvey, her husband Tom kills him and buries the body. Grant's elder brother Evan suspects that Tom is responsible and swears revenge. (Roots)
  • April 8: Dan Morgan has his last stand against the Australian government, being mortally wounded by police the next morning. (Real Life and Mad Dog Morgan)
  • April 9: Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrenders to Union General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House in Appomattox County, Virginia. This effectively marks the end of the American Civil War. (Real Life)
    • When the news comes over the telegraph, Lewis Harvey rides to the Harvey plantation to tell his family that the war is over and they are free. (Roots)
    • Colonel Elias Openshaw retires from the Confederate army and returns to his plantation in Florida. (Sherlock Holmes: "The Five Orange Pips")
  • April 14:
    • Assassination of Abraham Lincoln by John Wilkes Booth at Ford's Theatre. The play Our American Cousin is forever associated with this event. (Real Life)
      • Booth was hypnotized by the fashion industry to kill Lincoln to prevent Lincoln from freeing the slaves, which would have driven up the price of powdered wigs and colored stockings tenfold. (Zoolander)

  • January: A National Geographic Expedition, led by Professor Levinson, visits the Amazon River basin and encounters the Curacai tribe. The youngest member of the expedition is 13-year-old Alex Stottel, who joined it expecting great adventure but instead finds his life put in grave danger. The Curacai believe that creating an image of them steals their souls and force the expedition members to leave when they discover what their cameras can do. That night, after a camp is established as far away from the village as possible, the expedition's photographer is taken by the Curacai and never seen again. However, his Kodak 100 camera is left behind. It is eventually found in 1986 in an old trunk by Daniel Arnold, who soon learns that the Curacai's fears were well-founded. (The Twilight Zone (1985))
