Animorphs

  • What Tomorrow Brings: Andalites have a lot of idioms related to guide trees, and Menderash describes Marco as a "rock under my hoof" at one point.

Avatar: The Last Airbender

Crossover

  • A Hero, a crossover between Doctor Who and Puella Magi Madoka Magica has Dalek Sec, who gives us "SON-OF-A-THAL!"
  • Turnabout Storm:
  • In the Harry Potter/X-Men crossover Mutant Storm Snape comments on Dumbledore's extreme reluctance to use deadly force.
Snape: If you want to make a proper potion, you have to break a few ashwinder eggs.
  • If Wishes Were Ponies: When Harry and the CMC come to Hogwarts, the fillies (and Harry, as he's lived in Equestria for over a year and considers himself a pony) use numerous Equestrian phrases/ways of speaking (to the occasional confusion of their fellow Gryffindors). The same happens to any ponies when they hear English phrases for the first time (such as "Bob's your uncle").
  • The Last Seidr: Discussed. After the Hat gives a quick lecture on the wizard Merlin, Dr. Banner and Harry talk about how some wizards use Merlin's name as an expletive ("Merlin's Pants!")
  • In Boldores And Boomsticks, Lt Surge owns a Desert Braviary.
  • Lampshaded in A New World, A New Way, where Gurrkin says "Hay is for Ponyta, and apparently used as fries here."
  • Star Wars vs. Warhammer 40K:
    • During a meeting between the Republic military's top brass, Admiral Tarkin says that everyone needs to "address the roth in the room" before presenting his argument for why he believes the Jedi make poor generals and should hand over control of the Clone Army to professional military officers.
    • At one point in Episode 21, the narration describes a Cadian soldier being shot in the head with a blaster bolt and "dropp[ing] like a sack of drowned porgs."

Good Omens

  • In A.A. Pessimal's fic I Shall Endure to the End!, the proto-Judaic Mrs Japtheth tells Shem "Look, I don't know what zephyroth of the Kabbala you're on..."

Harry Potter

  • A Very Potter Musical has "Oh my Wizard-God!" and "Oh my Rowling!".
  • In HP and the Dragon's Revenge Neville says that after Michael got into Cho's knickers he dropped her "like an exploding cauldron."
  • In The Lion Tamer Umbridge decides if she can catch Harry doing something wrong and Dumbledore trying to aid him she can "kill two doxies with one hex."
  • In Rocking the Boat Dumbledore decides not to "bemoan a spilled cauldron."
  • In 3 Slytherin Marauders, Tom Riddle says that a lecture by the new assistant professor of History of Magic "set the kneazle among the jarveys."
  • In Lunch at Maxine's Ron reminds his mother he told her that when she "woke up and smelled the wolfsbane" he and Luna would start coming back to the Burrow.
  • In A Marauder's Plan McGonagall says that the "proof is in the casting" and refers to a recent trip to Thailand by Dumbledore as a "wild nargle chase." Several chapters later, Sirius is mulling over something which happened years ago and decides that it's "all magic through the wand."
  • Came Out of the Darkness:
Narcissa: Draco remember, never judge a dragon by a single scale.
  • In Not Normal a relative of Arthur Weasley says "No sense in reinventing the wand."
  • In Harry Potter: What I See Draco decides not to "look a gift centaur in the mouth."
  • In The French Connection Harry says "Did you never hear the old saying, 'Curiosity killed the Niffler'?" Especially odd considering Harry was raised as a Muggle for ten of the first eleven years of his life. He's perfectly familiar with cats.
  • In Mockingbird Harry says that he should probably "grip the broom by the handle."
  • In Luna's Hubby Kingsley Shacklebolt decides that an escaped Bellatrix Lestrange isn't casting with a working wand
  • In Veritas Oracle Ron tells Harry to "'grab the garden gnome by its legs' and get it over with."
  • The author of Dumbledore's Army and the Year of Darkness (in imitation of Rowling) has an occasional tendency to make up "wizarding" idioms, like "witches' instinct" for "women's intuition".
  • In Perilous Journey Ron says his mother's problem with Sirius is related to her belief that he deserved to be arrested for some reason, "a 'there wouldn't be smoke if there was no dragon' kind of thing."
  • In Of Unexpected Deliveries and Doorsteps Draco is infatuated with Blaise and Lucius says if it doesn't work out "there will be other kelpies in the pond for you, my son."
  • In Unsung Hero a wizard-raised Harry says "So? What's that got to do with the price of dragon hide in Kinzenpore?"
  • The Definition of Normal:
Snape: You do realize, Mr. Potter, that twisting the tail of a dragon will only get you burned.
  • Subverted in Wind Shear:
Lucius Potter: Being the head of the Potter family means trying to be Britain's best cat herder, and failing miserably more times than not.
Harry: Don't you mean kneazle herder?
Lucius Potter: No, I meant cats. Kneazles will listen to you if they know you can be trusted. Cats simply don't care and won't listen no matter what.
  • Harry Potter and the Old Friend:
Amelia: I'd rather kill two snidgets with one bludger and accomplish both tasks at the same time.
  • I Did Nothing:
McGonagall: Might as well be burnt for a dragon as for a niffler after all.
  • Maybe They Did Know What They Were Doing:
Pansy: All I'm going to say is what if the cauldron was on the other fire?
  • In Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality, Harry surmises that Quirrell likely obtained a certain piece of information by means of lead-pipe Legilimency — i.e, that he tortured it out of someone.
  • The Subterfuge:
Snape: My reasons are my own, Potter. And you would do well to not tug at a gift broom's bristles.
  • The Mage and The Potions Master:
Dumbledore: As head of the Wizengamot, Cornelius, I must warn you that you are on very thin ice indeed. That broomstick won't fly.
  • Not the Wand But the Wizard:
Draco: I never quite know what to expect from you, Potter.
    Harry: Because I'm so mysterious.
Draco: Because you're like an Antipodean Opaleye in an apothecary.
  • Harry Potter at the Knees of the Marauders:
Harry: Are you accusing me of being a blood traitor, Parkinson?
    Pansy: If the wand matches.
  • In Dragon Chronicles 2: Harry Potter, Dragon Whisperer Rita Skeeter refers to readers who've been living under an obscurus curse.
  • In Night of the Wolf Dedalus Diggle comments to himself that "The early hippogryph gets the ferret."
  • In Bad Candy Remus comments that it's raining "gnomes and kneazles".
  • In Spiders Make Good Friends Neville states that Draco is "stirring the wrong cauldron".
  • Percy Weasley and The Prefect Job That Isn't A Vanity Role: Dilwyn Greengrass starts swearing by “Dear Mrs. Malfoy” because he writes to her about Draco’s bad behavior so often.

How to Train Your Dragon

  • A Thing of Vikings: Toiréasa's comment to Dagur is a modification of the more familiar "lion's mouth" idiom.
"Walking into Berk right now would be like sticking your head in the dragon's mouth and not expecting it to bite down."

The Legend of Zelda

  • Zelda fanfiction and fancomics tend to replace the words "God" or "Jesus" with either "Nayru", "Din" or "Farore", depending on which one is the most "fitting". Especially striking in the fan-flash series Unknown Origin, where Original Character "Biggs" would often shout "For Farore's sake!!" or "Oh my Din!!" whenever something weird happens to Link. As of Skyward Sword, Hylia is also commonly used.
  • Their Bond:
    • Impaz damns Ganondorf to "to the Lightest of the Goddess' realms", which would be a loose equivalent of Hell.
    • "Who'd conned those two into bridal showers? Silver rupee said it was Link…"
  • Blind Courage: "There is no way in Demise's Fire I am giving up my child so you can keep up appearances!"

The Loud House

  • Peeking Through the Fourth Wall: Episode 2 has Luna say, "What in the name of Chris Savino have we gotten ourselves into?!"
  • Substitute Roommate: Lincoln says, "For the love of Ronnie Anne!".

Miscellaneous

  • Bait and Switch:
    • Captain Kanril walks onto her ship's bridge after a one night stand and her Andorian first officer remarks that she's acting "like a grayth that just dined on prize alicorn".
    • When Gaarra gets tongue-tied at the prospect of the Bajor having a Cardassian bartender in Ten Forward, said bartender says to him, "vole got your tongue, Commander Reshek?" (For reference, a Cardassian vole.)
    • From Reality Is Fluid, a Challenge Fic starring the same characters, Tess, the aforementioned Andorian, says that the Bajor has "a cinder's chance in the Northern Wastes" of taking out an enormous Undine fleet. This makes for something of an Inverted Trope version, as the Northern Wastes of Andoria are nothing but glaciers.
    • In "Frostbite'', Tess tells her Breen captor, "Frak you and the zabathu you rode in on!"
  • Legacy of ch'Rihan and other stories:
    • Peace Forged in Fire: A conversation between two Romulan characters gives us this one:
Deihu* Hannam t'Hei: How long will it take to reach Khitomer, Khre’Riov?*
Morgaiah t'Thavrau: Four days, five hours, as the mogai flies.
    • "Solaere ssiun Hnaifv'daenn" uses "hlai dung" as a stand-in for "bullshit". In the Rihannsu novels a hlai is a Romulan meat bird apparently something like an oversize chicken.
    • "Flaihhsam s'Spahkh" has a "mogai in the room", as opposed to an elephant.
  • Fantasy of Utter Ridiculousness: Alice Margatroid's version of "Oh my God!" is stated to be "Dear sweet mother of Makai!", which refers to its creator Shinki and makes sense given the origin of Alice's younger self.

Mork & Mindy

My Little Pony

  • In Chasing the Rainbow, a sleepy Baby Nightglow is told "Ponies who stay soon become prey" when he complains about having to move early in the morning.
  • The term "didn't give a flying clod of manure" is used once in Wishing Well.

My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic

  • "Buck" is commonly used instead of the similar sounding four-letter word, though at least one comic has noted the problems with that.
  • The fandom also likes to use "plot" in place of "ass". This resulted from Memetic Mutation relating to people claiming they "watch it for the plot", and people posting pictures of cartoon pony rear ends in response. "Flank" is also sometimes used for "ass" or "butt", which is actually biologically inaccurate; a horse's flank is its side, not its butt. Some people just got confused because the pony's cutie mark is on the pony's flank, but right at the end of it so it could also be described as being on its butt.
  • Chemistry:
    • "She could sense love around her like other ponies could smell haybacon".
    • "I have to visit the little fillies room".
  • Excuses... Excuses... features several puns, such as "out of the stable".
  • Hoofstuck: Pinkie Pie is confused over whether or not she should say everypony when talking to the reader. She can't come up with the right word (everyone/everybody) though.
Hi everypony! Or wait a second, not everypony! Everyhuman? No, that sounds dumb. You guess you could say everyman, but why would you greet anypony with an old morality play? That's like the opposite of a party.
  • The Palaververse: Since it's a universe with multiple species, but equines are a big part of it, Moonlight Palaver has this from an equine speaker, replacing "humanity":
Burro: Get them here as fast as equinely possible. Or whatever other genus applies, of course.
  • PONY.MOV: Discussed in MAGIC.MOV, where Spike doesn't see the difference between "anybody" and "anypony".
Spike: You know, you can say anybody. Instead of anypony. Frankly I don't see what the point of that is. I would have know what you would meant if you would have said anybody. Seems to me like that's the kind of thing everybody's doing just because everybody else is doing.
  • Pound and Pumpkin Cake's Adventures (and Misadventures) in Potty Training:
  • Princess Trixie Sparkle: During one of the songs, Luna sings "Do you really take me for a foal?" This applies in two different ways: as a punny equivalent to "fool" but also as an equivalent to "child".
  • RainbowDoubleDash's Lunaverse has the usual use of "anypony" (although this is actually a problem when it shows up in official documents, as it technically ignores the fact that not all of Equestria's citizens are ponies), and also has a wide variety of sun-based curses (due to Corona's betrayal, the Sun has a similar connotation to Equestrians as Hell might to a Christian or Muslim).
  • Sharing the Night: When commenting on how she's lied about being an alicorn so often that her parents no longer believe her about it now that it's true, Twilight describes herself as "the filly who cried timberwolf".
  • Under the Northern Lights: Common, just like in the canon show, but even more is added since the fic deals with more than one species. Get used to "anydeer" as well as "anypony".
  • What a Strange Little Colt: In addition to the usual terms, there are a few times where characters notice Gabriel not using the pony-themed terminology.
  • The Writing on the Wall contains the usual ponyificiations of words, but the end of the story averts this trope intentionally because they realize that they need to warn off anyone who comes by thereafter, regardless of species, just as the ones who had come before them had done, lest they die of radiation sickness from the nuclear waste below.

The Penguins of Madagascar

Pokémon

  • Anachronism: "Meowth got your tongue?
  • Ashes of the Past:
    • Brock mentions "locking the barn door after the Ponyta has bolted", leading Ash to wonder how a barn door would keep a Ponyta from burning its way out anyway.
  • Back to Zero:
    • Giovanni has the line "You had two years to stop being such a Persian".
    • To annoy him, Cassidy tells James that Jessie and Butch are "boinking all the time like little Buneary".
    • The 16th chapter has the line: "Miyamoto knew that her life with Giovanni wasn't quite that of the white picket fence, 2.5 kids and an Arcanine".
    • The line "It kills two Pidgey with one rock throw" is used.
    • Miyamoto has the line "And a little Pidgey told me (...)".
  • Pokémon: Clefairy Tales gives us "The Murkrow and the Pitcher", in addition to having Pikachu refer to Arceus-damned Zubat at one point during the Mt. Moon arc.
  • Guys Being Dudes: While insulting Arlo's haircut, Candela references a "flock of Wingulls".
  • Penny Saves Paldea: Arven thinks "Not my circus, not my Aipoms" when he wonders why Juliana is buying several dozen servings of peanut butter.
  • Pokémpanions:
    • "The straw that broke the Camerupt's back"
    • "Jack Shiftry"
    • Grumpig-back ride"
  • Pokemon Opal And Garnet:
  • Pokémon Reset Bloodlines: Falkner and his father Walker often use figures of speech involving avian Pokémon. Some of them include "Don't count your Pidgeys before they hatch" or "Early Spearow gets the Caterpie".
  • Winter's Hidden Warmth:
    • "I think we need to address the Donphan in the room"
    • Various hairsyles end up getting renamed (ponytails = Ponyta-tails, goatees = Gogoatees, etc.)
    • "'What?' Gordie replied with a Galarian Meowth grin."
    • "Before Gordie could react, Melony pulled him into a Bewear hug and gave him a big, wet smooch on the cheek."
    • "...she was still standing at the entrance with her mouth agape like a Magikarp out of water."
    • "Cala blushed, rubbing the back of her neck Mareepishly."
    • "Holy Miltank..!"
    • "Well I'll be a Mankeyʼs uncle..."
    • "Okay, okay, hold your Horsea a sec."

Pretty Cure

RWBY

  • A sizable portion of RWBY fanfics has characters saying a variation of "Oh Oum" (despite the fact that "Oh my god" was already spoken in the series), along with "Thank Dust" and "What the Grimm?"
  • RWBY: Scars: A "box of Mistralian food " is mentioned.

Skylanders

Star Wars

  • Limpet AU: In "Meet the Skywalkers", when Vader comments on Luke's talent for destroying ordered systems, Luke responds with "Talk about the Toydarian calling the Jawa cheap".

Steven Universe

Transformers

  • More Fragging Paperwork: According to Optimus Prime, most of the Decepticons are "a few diodes short of a logic circuit."
  • Riding a Sunset: Charlie quickly learns Cybertronian swears from Ratchet, Ironhide, and Brawn, and considers using them on a rude official during a meeting between the Autobots and the government. Later, she discusses Cybertronian swears with Memo and Chip. The Autobots, likewise, take a while to fully understand Earth slang terms (Charlie has to explain several times what she means when she calls something "cool").
  • Starscream And The Drones: Towards the end of the fic, Megatron asks Starscream what on Cybertron he thinks he's doing.
