Hilarious In Hindsight / The Runaway Guys

Go To

  • At one point in Mario Party, NCS takes a while before moving some text along, and Chugga says "Do you know how to press 'A'?" In New Super Mario Bros. Wii, NCS seems to have a small bubbling issue, which requires pressing A. Then Tim manages to successfully nail a bubble-related glitch near the end of the LP.
  • In the first episode of Mario Party, Jon makes a joke about their playthrough being a Mario Party rom hack. Now, with the creation of the Party Planner tool, Mario Party rom hacks actually exist, with TRG themselves playing one (a custom board based on them, no less) on one of Jon's streams!
  • Jon jokingly calls Jigglypuff "the deadliest of warriors" while Chugga fights Wolf in the Bonus Video. Jigglypuff ended up giving Tim a lot of trouble.
  • In Kirby's Return to Dream Land, Chugga says "Final Smash Time" after getting the Ultra Sword for the first time in episode. In the fourth Super Smash Bros. game, Ultra Sword becomes Kirby's Final Smash.
    • Also in episode 1 of that project, after swallowing a Bowby, Chugga jokes about becoming Archer Kirby. Archer Kirby would later become an actual Copy Ability in Kirby: Triple Deluxe.
    • Another moment from episode 1, upon unlocking the third stage, Chugga points out that Kirby hasn't yet had a game in 3D format. Fast forward to 2021, and it's revealed that Kirby will make his first foray into 3D gaming, with Kirby and the Forgotten Land.
  • They bring up in their LP of the first Mario Party that Wario is canonically the Super Star. Later, in Mario Party 2, they play as Wario for Minigame Coaster, and at the end they are told that they "shall attain Super Stardom".
  • In the very first Fortune Street board they played, Jon said it was rather hit-or-miss as to whether people liked the game or not (especially watching it), and that the one board they were playing was largely just for filler. It ended up being a huge hit with fans, to the point where it became a tradition to play Fortune Street with their special guest players after every major project.
  • In Wii Party, the fourth player was an AI named Luca. In LittleBigPlanet and at least one board of Fortune Street, the fourth player was Lucahjin. note
  • A few days after Chugga learns to use thunder in Castle Crashers, his house is struck by lightning. No serious damage was done and Chugga and his cats were unharmed so this qualifies as hilarious.
  • Early in Mario Party 2, Chugga says that "If we play Mario Party 3, it'll probably be Tim's game." They eventually do play Mario Party 3, and Tim wins the majority of the boards, thus becoming the game's overall winner.
  • Jon's habit of running away and leaving the others in the dust in the Mario LPs became even funnier when Blue Toad was announced to be the playable Toad in Super Mario 3D World, and of the four playable characters, he's the fastest by a large margin.
    • In fact, 3D World's starting roster is basically identical to the North American release of Super Mario Bros. 2... and Toad was fastest in that game too.
  • In Mario Party 1, the guys discuss Bomberman and Jon brings up the despised, needlessly Darker and Edgier Bomberman Act:Zero, adding that it's a "hilarious" game. Three years later, Jon started streaming regularly on Twitch, and the sheer So Bad, It's Good-ness of the game has influenced his streams so much it has its own dedicated night and MLG League.
  • Chugga's legendarily poor performance at Wheel of Fortune came just days before the actual show aired an episode featuring what some are calling the worst contestant in Wheel of Fortune history.
    • For that matter, there was another contestant who caused an uproar on social media due to his amazing bonus round solve ("NEW BABY BUGGY" with only "NE" revealed). The contestant's name? Emil.
    • 6 days prior to the Wheel of Fortune video containing the infamous "Calibrary Cuff Paula Deen" guess, a video of the Wii game with a Mii of Paula Deen as a contestant was uploaded.
  • When playing side modes in Mario Party 4, Chugga mentions that the tile drop game can be played with nine players, in which case the ninth player is Bowser, and claims that this is the only time in Mario Party history that you can play as Bowser. While a side-game in 5 also exists, the true hilarity is that this video was posted during E3, on the same day that Mario Party 10 was revealed to have playable Bowser as a major premise.
  • In Mario Party 4, Jon wins a game of Tree Stomp when Daisy's AI blocks Chugga so their stumps grind together the entire round. Fits right in with the tides of Daisy/Chugga innuendo later on during the TRG stream.
    • Daisy would eventually become a Super Smash Bros. fighter as a Peach echo. Bonus points for having a Blue Toad.
  • In Super Mario 3D World, which was recorded before the release of Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, Jon jokes that Captain Toad will be a prequel to 3D World. He was right.
  • In episode 7 of their Super Smash Bros. Brawl playthrough, Chugga says he wishes you could play the Subspace Emissary stages in versus mode as stage skins, and that the one they were currently playing as would be a skin of Final Destination. Then Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U introduced Omega Stages.
  • During a fight in Super Smash Bros. Brawl against a Subspace Pit, Chugga makes an offhand comment about how the A.I. is learning after it dodges a repeated move from Tim and Jon. Flash forward to 2015, one Smash Bros. game later, and we do indeed have fighters that can learn from brawling with humans, in the form of amiibo.
  • During the Yoshi's Island board in Fortune Street, the same board with Waluigi having a bridal boutique, gay marriage and its legal issues in the US is brought up, along with how it's legal in Canada, Jon's home country. Jon in his Waluigi voice says "Waluigi's not prejudiced. Waluigi thinks everyone should get married." In 2015, a Supreme Court ruling declared that all 50 states should legalize gay marriage.
  • Also Heartwarming in Hindsight: In a LittleBigPlanet intro, Lucahjin sings "If you like a thing you shoulda put a ring on it!" and ProtonJon proceeds to stick several rings onto her, proclaiming "I REALLY LIKE IT!" The two would later get Happily Married.
    • Similarly, Captain Falcon being paired with a horse in Mii Party, since Jon likes playing Captain Falcon (which Tom believes is how Jon won the second round of Boss Battle as Ganondorf, whose movepool is similar to Falcon's but slower) and Lucah likes horses.
  • In New Super Mario Bros. U, Emile mentions that when he saw Miyamoto he thought he was an old lady at first, much to the shock of the others. However, after Miyamoto said who Bowser Jr's mother was (Miyamoto himself), though a joke, it becomes the biggest coincidence of the LP.
  • In Part 16 of New Super Luigi U, a Miiverse post from someone named Josh talking about his cat sparks a discussion of how Let's Players tend to own cats, with Jon theorising that it's because most of them are introverts and introverts like cats. Jon himself would end up adopting a cat (missing its right eye for health reasons) years later.
  • Similarly, in Part 21 of Little Big Planet 2, Chugga jokes "I've always wanted a bunny since I was a little girl". He'd later end up getting a pet rabbit.
  • When starting Knuckles's story in Sonic Adventure, the first hint Knuckles gets is that he can probably get into City Hall. Jon suggests that Knuckles run for mayor, and Chugga claims he's smarter than most of the applicants. This was recorded before the premise was used for an episode of Sonic Boom, and Knuckles did a profoundly bad job of being mayor.
  • In Episode 8 of Super Mario Bros. 3 (recorded in March 2015), Chugga says he wants there to be same-sex couples in future installments of the Fire Emblem series and Jon replies that it likely won't happen due to Japan's values. Three months later, it was revealed you can have same-sex marriages in Fire Emblem Fates.
  • During their video displaying New Super Mario Bros. 2's Coin Rush mode, Chugga says that its DLC would be the closest that Jon would get to playing Kaizo again. Then came Super Mario Maker.
  • The very first line of the Sonic Adventure LP has Jon comment that the reason they're playing the game is because they suspect the fans are burnt out on the Mario series, which the Guys have covered multiple entries of, including the project before Adventure. Their next LP, started partway through Adventure? Super Mario Bros. 3.
  • A man named Jon has voiced Big the Cat, hated it, and purposefully forgot how to do the voice out of their hatred for the character, realizing later on that their voice for Big was well loved. Are we talking about ProtonJon, or Jon St. John?
  • Back when the Guys played Mario Party, Chugga won against the AI (Wario, in this case) by one coin, and said "Suck it, Slim!" in reference towards SlimKirby losing in Mario Party 5 by one coin. By the end of the first board in Mario Party 5, Chugga LOST by one coin, to an AI-controlled Mario no less. SlimKirby was quick to comment on this:
SlimKirby (in comments): Wait? What's that sound? I dunno, call me crazy, but I think that's the sound of the universe coming back into balance.
  • In their playthrough of Big's story in Sonic Adventure, Jon, in his Big voice, called Eggman "Dr. Robobot." A little over a month after that was uploaded, a game with "Robobot" in the title was revealed.
    • The same video began the aforementioned "Buy my book" gag. Big would soon go on to star in his own visual novel.
  • During the Mario Party 4 playthrough, Jon speculated that he could only do well in the even numbered Mario Party games and he would do poorly in Mario Party 5. During the Mario Party 5 playthrough, Jon wins five consecutive boards (the last five out of seven), making him the overall winner.
  • In Little Big Planet 2, Chugga was "The Frog Fairy". Fast forward to their play-through of Rayman Legends, he's player one, meaning he is playing as Murphy, A Frog Fairy.
  • Though already funny in its own right, Jon's running gag of portraying Waluigi owning a bridal boutique was made infinitely more hilarious when the villains of Super Mario Odyssey were described by Nintendo as an "evil wedding planning firm." Jon himself even asked "Is TRG Waluigi canon now?" on Twitter after the revelation.
  • After Jon wins his third consecutive board in Mario Party 6 (and eighth straight overall counting the five straight during 5), on Twitter he highlights a message he received criticizing him for trying to win in Dokapon and demanding that he let Tim win. Not only does Tim win the next board of Mario Party 6 posted (his first main board win in an even-numbered Party), he does so quite handily, being in the lead for most of it and at one point even having 11 of the 20 total stars in play.
  • In Yoshi's Tropical Island of Mario Party 1, they were discussing the possibility of Mega Man 11, in which Emile hoped that it wasn't going to be a 8-bit game like Mega Man 9 and Mega Man 10 just out of low cost. Six years after the joke, there's a Mega Man 11 and not in 8-bit.
  • Halfway through Mario Party 1's Eternal Star, Jon tells Bowser that Peach likes his (Bowser's) car. Two and a half years later, Super Mario 3D World gives Bowser a Cool Car that the fans fell in love with.
  • Many jokes are made throughout Dokapon Kingdom about the red-haired Kira the Merchant having a crush on Jon, due to her constantly showing up for him. This leads to Emile saying Kira is Jon's waifu and joking about them being engaged. Jon would later start dating and become engaged to a different red-headed woman before the series ended.
  • For Mario Party 7, Emile switched to playing Toad. As some comments pointed out, this video went up just as Toad was becoming a trending topic in the news for very graphic reasons. note
  • Speaking of trending topics, also during the playthrough of Mario Party 7, the last-5-turns event on Windmillville was all red spaces turning into Bowser. This happened the same week that the Internet discovered "Bowsette." And then Tim said, in the pre-recorded video, "Bowser, you're really popular today!" Almost all of the top-rated comments point out his unintentional foresight.
  • The jokes about Zelda being a chain smoker in the The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past LP weren't the first time the character was depcicted as such. A year prior to the LP being uploaded, StephenPlays uploaded a part of his The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time LP where he depicted Zelda as a chainsmoker.note
  • During Mario Party 7's Solo cruise, Jon has to choose between Masae's profile and making his own. When he makes his own profile, he claims that it's not that he doesn't want to be Masae. Later down the line, Jon gets a voice changer for his streams. One of the voice changer options makes him sound a lot like Masae.
  • Early in Goomba's Booty Boardwalk in Mario Party 8, Chugga asks if Waluigi has ever been shirtless in canon. Jon immediately responds in the negative, and is amazed that Emile would even think that. Between the recording of that video and its release, Waluigi indeed made his shirtless debut in the Swimming event in Mario and Sonic at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
  • In Test for the Best from Mario Party 8, Jon is playing the basketball-themed Settle It in Court minigame and one of the Guys makes a remark about the Toronto Raptors, to which Jon says, "they're not doing so well right now." The Raptors would go on to win that year's NBA championship (aided by an epic buzzer-beater against Philadelphia by Kawhi Leonard, who Toronto had traded away franchise star DeMar DeRozan for, to eliminate the Sixers).
  • At a Momocon panel in 2018, Jon couldn't attend due to doing a Mixer event for Sega in New York, so Masae took his place, wearing a wig and glasses and pretending to be him for the first few minutes. A year later, Jon acquired some voice filters, and one of them makes him sound almost exactly like Masae.
  • Upon getting 9 lives on Minigame Island in Mario Party, Emile joked about being Cat Wario or Mario which Jon say there is no such thing as Cat Mario. The video was uploaded in September of 2012, the game was released in November of 2013, of which they will play for the channel.
  • In Goomba's Booty Boardwalk in Mario Party 8, the Guys joke about a music series called "Toad Screams Out the Hits." A few months later, an unrelated meme arose of just that — Toad screaming out "Chandelier," "All I Want for Christmas Is You," etc.
  • During the "Game Boy Player, Disc Only" segment for Colosseum 2020, Jules calls back to the bumper gag where he ate a bowl of Cheez-Its and ketchup like cereal, claiming that he "ate that for charity!" Little did he know that it wouldn’t be the only thing he would eat for charitynote ...
  • In Episode 41 of his EarthBound let's play, Emile recalls a recurring childhood dream where he was living in a Middle Eastern country with a mysterious wife who wears a veil all the time. At the end of the dream, he learns that his wife is a tree (and yes, they had children together). In Episode 46 of Secret of Mana, Emile (and Jon) are sucker punched by the twist that Randi's mother is the Mana Tree. The fact that the episode was uploaded in April Fools' Day makes the reveal even funnier.
  • During their Kirby & the Amazing Mirror LP, Emile sings "Kirby's going to the mall!". Kirby and the Forgotten Land has multiple levels set in an abandoned shopping mall.
  • In TRG Colosseum 2021, one of Emile's bumpers featured him copying other peoples' bumpers from the previous year. Another bumper of his had him baking cookies without a recipe (with predictably disastrous results). In 2022, it became other peoples' turns to copy Emile's bumper, as multiple people did bumpers based around the same idea of them baking cookies with some sort of twist, typically referring back to Emile's attempt when doing so.
  • During the first ever Thrown Controllers, a contestant was asked to put the Devil May Cry series in anachronic order. He got it wrong as he puts it as 3, 1, 2 and 4. Come Devil May Cry 5 and he would've been correct since 2 and 4 have now swapped places.
  • During their play through of Waluigi's Island in Mario Party 3, Emile explains he didn't get very far in Banjo-Kazooie because he didn't read Bottles' text and didn't know how to progress. Come 2022, the channel features a play through of the game.
  • At the end of Mario Party 8, Jon asked if they would be going onto 9 or be taking a detour. Emile admitted he wasn't exactly sure at the time. Sure enough, there would be a detour.
  • While playing "Mario's Rainbow Castle" in the Mario Party playthrough, Emile mentions that it's always been his dream to have enough of a lead to be able to turn a star down in the last turn and still win the game. Over a decade later, he was finally able to make his dream come true while playing "Wiggler's Garden" in Mario Party DS.
  • In the first 30 seconds of Kirby Star Allies, they discuss how Nintendo hasn't brought out many 4-player platformers lately and how Jon is excited for the next New Super Mario Bros game, clearly dating the recording session to before the announcement of Super Mario Bros. Wonder.
  • In Episode 11 of Donkey Kong Country Returns, Emile wishes that Nintendo would release an HD remaster of Super Mario RPG using actual 3D models. Later that year, Nintendo would announce a full-on remake of Super Mario RPG that used actual 3D models.
  • During Olimar's debut in Subspace Emisary and by extension Steve, Emile plucks more Pikmin and when the last one turns out to be red, he questions himself for plucking more when he could've survived with three pikmin. The next two Smash games would reduce Olimar to three Pikmin.
    • Jon also has the incorrect assumption that Olimar starts with a red Pikmin in response to Emile saying there's a chance he won't get red. Future games would make Olimar start with red, yellow, and blue trio of Pikmin.
