  • All the fanart of the Wii Fit Trainers where they give them new faces to replace the originals? Turns out, the Wii Fit devs felt the same way about this.
  • In an episode of the The Super Mario Bros. Super Show, "Bats In The Basement", Mario and Luigi have Dracula as an uninvited guest in their home and spend the duration of the episode trying to get him to leave. Come Ultimate, and guess who would be coming with Simon and Richter as a boss? Even better, Luigi fights Dracula at the end of his Classic Mode, making it possible to have a reunion between Dracula and the Mario Bros.

  • YouTube Let's Player Skawo (one of the minds behind Newer Super Mario Bros. Wii and DS) did an LP of WarioWare Gold, and in the eighth episode, he pointed out that Wario Deluxe has an accent that makes him sound like Dracula. More specifically, he said "Apparently we're fighting Dracula here, not Wario." This video was published on August 7th, 2018, one day before Dracula's Castle was confirmed as a stage and Dracula was confirmed as a stage boss.
  • Similarly, Yuriofwind did an Obscure Gaming on a bootleg game called Donkey Kong 5: The Journey of Over Time and Space, and noted that at the end of the castle levels, you fight a vampire character who he sarcastically dubs "Donkey Kong's greatest foe... Count Dracula!" With Dracula as a boss in World of Light, DK now has an official chance to face off against his greatest foe. Made even funnier by the fact that the same Direct that announced Dracula as a boss also announced DK's real arch-nemesis, King K. Rool, as a playable character.

  • Additionally, Mario & Luigi both fought against Dracula in an unofficial capacity in the fangame Super Mario Blue Twilight DX before this game added him as a boss character. Better yet, Luigi fights Dracula at the end of his Classic Mode route!
  • Not too long after the game's E3 2018 presentation, YouTuber Alpharad made a video concerning a bracketnote  of the three (at the time) newly announced newcomers (and Sans). And although the video ended with Alpharad sadly announcing this means Sans would be in Smash, the video had unforeseen circumstances involved. Namely, before putting in "Sans", he briefly considered adding a Mii Swordsman modeled after Chrom, but decided against it because "he's not coming back". It is made more hilarious when it was announced that a Mii Fighter costume based after Sans will be in the game.

  • Dark Samus premiered in Metroid Prime 2: Echoes. In Ultimate, she's an Echo Fighter. Also, her inclusion means it's now possible to play as Metroid.
  • Metroid: Third Derivative had a gag where Dark Samus whiffs 3 massive laser shots at Samus's ship, leading to the Duck Hunt Dog popping up and laughing at her, before getting lasered himself. With the introduction of Dark Samus as a playable character in this game and her Final Smash being a giant laser, along with the dog and duck being Promoted to Playable in Smash 4, you can now re-enact the strip, or even prove to Dark Samus that the canine is stronger than he looks.
  • This is not the first time a Snake has fought against a Rathalos.
  • This is also not the first time Bomberman, Solid Snake and Simon Belmont have fought together in a Platform Fighter - and back then, Bomberman was playable!
  • In this dubbed comic, after Pikachu leaves for Pokken Tournament, King K. Rool attempts to get into Smash by disguising (badly) as a Pikachu. Although this dub was posted on the same day he was announced for Ultimate, this was actually a coincidence, since the voice actors recorded their lines prior to the Direct and the comic itself was made more than 2 years before that.
  • There was a fake rumor going around after E3 2018 that claimed that Japanese fans started calling Ridley "Captain America", because of the support he received overseas. Who is the next Metroid representative to join Ultimate? Dark Samus, the first playable character created by an American developer.
  • In Melee and Brawl, it's often said that Zelda's best move is her down special, because it transforms her to the much more viable Sheik. In Ultimate, her down special turns out to be a powerful tool that allows her to zone much better, so in many ways, her down special is still her best move.
  • Siiva Gunner posted a "rip" of Bloodlines from Castlevania: Dracula X that's really a remix of Bloody Stream. The comparison between Richter and Joseph Joestar makes this even funnier.
  • Plenty have been joking about Ultimate being the Darker and Edgier Smash game since its ominous reveal trailer. So far, every announcement of a newcomer has involved at least one of Nintendo's beloved childhood characters getting very explicitly murdered. Ridley's reveal sees him crushing Mario's neck and stabbing Mega Man with his tail, Simon's has Luigi get his soul ripped out by Death, and King K. Rool's has him downright rabbit-punching King Dedede very violently. All of this makes it seem like those memes weren't actually all that far off. And then there's the opening to World of Light, hoo boy...
  • In her reveal trailer, Isabelle ponders that maybe she should be the mayor while Villager is away fighting in Smash. One Animal Crossing parody video explains why that would not be a good idea.
  • Vinny from Vinesauce once did a corruption of Luigi's Mansion where one of the ghosts in a cutscene got replaced by a mustache-less Luigi. Simon and Richter's reveal trailer involves Luigi actually becoming a ghost.
  • An Urban Legend of Zelda claimed that Cloud would not appear in World of Light. Not only does he appear, he's a Required Party Member, to boot!
  • Some people speculated that Steve from Minecraft would get in due to being the most recognizable indie game character. With the reveal of the Piranha Plant as free DLC, we technically get a Steve.
  • In Soul Calibur VI, someone created a Piranha Plant as a fighter in its custom character creator, nearly two weeks before the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Direct revealed that a Piranha Plant would be a fighter in the game as free DLC.
  • With Ken and Chrom as Echo Fighters, they can team up with Ryu and Lucina, recreating their teams in Project X Zone 2.
  • This parody of the Pokérap included Joker, Banjo and Sans as joke characters. It was also published on December 6th 2018...mere hours before Joker was confirmed as DLC!
  • This video showed off a mod for the previous game that added Joker and Kawakami 2 months prior to the former being announced as DLC.
  • Throughout the years, many fans have jokingly suggested that the announcer should become a playable character. Technically, as the announcer shares the same voice actor as Master Hand and Crazy Hand, playing as Master Hand in World of Light has made that become a reality, this time without a glitch. In a more direct and vocal example, now with Joker joining the roster, this has somewhat come true, since his English voice actor is the announcer.
    • Additionally, the infamous glitch from Melee in playing as Master Hand in a vs. match is ultra amusing now as well due to this.
  • Issue 92 of Archie Comics' Sonic the Hedgehog had Sonic say he "had enough of Pokémon" during a fight with Monkey Khan. As you can see in the World of Light trailer, it didn't stop him from making an effort to save Pikachu.
  • One idea the fanbase has for decloning Ganondorf is to give his current moveset to Black Shadow, which would hypothetically act as a reasonable compromise by freeing Ganondorf up to get an accurate moveset, while still retaining the fan-favourite "harder-hitting Falcon clone" moveset and adding in a new F-Zero rep as a bonus. In the Black Shadow spirit battle, Black Shadow is represented by Ganondorf.
  • World of Light's comparisons to Avengers: Infinity War became far more portent when it came to light that in order to get World of Light's true ending, the player has to keep the power struggle between Galeem and Dharkon "perfectly balanced, as all things should be."
  • There were already comparisons/predictions to Avengers: Endgame before the film even came out, with both plots taking place after after a lot of characters are disintegrated, and it's up to whoever's left to set things right. By the end, it's not hard to imagine that they both also have a slightly different villain to go up against after the first one (Dharkon and Past Thanos), and many, if not all the characters end up coming back in time for the final battle.
  • Many people were making jokes on how the Final Smashes were very similar to Persona 5's cut-ins, jokingly stating that Joker was confirmed a DLC character. Cue Joker being the first character announced for the Fighters Pass.
  • Shulk can now fight a buncha Jokers.
  • Captain N: The Game Master was the very first time that Simon Belmont, Pit, Mega Man, Donkey Kong, Link, and Zelda appeared together on an official TV show. 28-29 years later, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is released, which is both the official reunion between them and the time where they can finally face each other in battle.
  • A YouTube video edit (by Shishoe) of the boxing scene from the SpongeBob episode "Idiot Box" had Ken and Incineroar's heads on the boxes, satirising the box theory debate at the time. As it turns out, it accurately predicted the setup for their reveal trailer.
  • Futaba as an Inkling was a meme ever since her reveal in the original Persona 5. The joke comes full circle in this game by having Inkling represent Futaba as a Spirit.
  • Persona 5 fans were initially curious and skeptical on why Joker had a Grappling Hook as his up special, when he didn't display anything with it in his home game, outside of certain menus that could've easily been forgotten about. Then comes the reveal of Persona 5 Royal where the grappling hook is tied to a new mechanic.
  • In late 2014, Flygon and Ridley were considered comparable Memetic Losers for being Nintendo dragons whose fans didn't get what they wanted (Mega Flygon in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, playable Ridley in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U.) The Flygon spirit battle involves a green Ridley.
  • The Version 3.0 update included Mii costumes for the Persona 3 protagonist. P3 protagonist's English voice actor, Yuri Lowenthal, also happens to voice Marth in Ultimate, another blue-haired fighter with a sword.
  • This comic (made during the Smash 4 era) theorizes what it would be like if the characters changed their appearance based on the stage they're on, with Ike, Villager, and Fox being used to illustrate the examples. When they get to a Pokémon stage, Fox turns into Vulpix. Come the release of Ultimate, and the Spirit battle for Vulpix is fighting Fox, who throws a Poké Ball with Vulpix in it at the beginning of the fight.
  • This tweet by Kevin Fagaragan was posted 3 days before Banjo & Kazooie and the Heroes of Dragon Quest were revealed for the roster.
  • The infamous Grinch leak predicted Banjo and Kazooie even before E3 2019 as well as Ken back in November 2018.
  • Back when Duck Hunt was first revealed in Smash 4, many have heavily compared them to Banjo and Kazooie (even to the point that many said that the former were the closest Smash would ever get to having the latter). Come E3 2019, not only are Banjo and Kazooie finally in Smash, but their trailer also has the Duck Hunt Duo imitating them in the same manner as when Dedede imitated King K. Rool.
  • For years, people have been (at least somewhat jokingly) asking for Goku from the Dragon Ball franchise to be included as a playable character in Smash Bros., which makes the inclusion of characters from Dragon Quest, another series with art and character design done by Akira Toriyama, that much funnier. Of particular note, the voice actor for Solo (the Hero from Dragon Quest IV), Takeshi Kusao, happens to voice Trunks in the Dragon Ball anime.
  • In May 2019, a month before E3, (NSFW) a Deviantart user made a list of predicting the DLC Fighters Pass and they managed to predict both Luminary and Banjo correctly! Also, they nearly got Banjo's order correct but correctly predicted that Luminary would be the second fighter in the pass right after Joker!
  • This Twitter post from December 2018 which implied Joker stole Banjo's invitation for himself becomes ironic as the bear still got invited anyway later on.
  • BroskiPlays! posted a video of the 10 most obscure spirits where he explicitly states that while Cubivore was a Nintendo game published by Atlus in North Americanote  and was included as a spirit, to "not get your hopes up for Persona" because Cubivore was already represented by a trophy back in Melee. The best part is that this video was uploaded one week before Joker was announced as DLC!
  • Another tweet from December 2018 where a user gave their predictions for the DLC characters and the two characters at the very top of their list for most likely candidates were none other than "a Dragon Quest protagonist and Banjo-Kazooie"!
  • The Terminator franchise has left such a gargantuan impact on pop culture that the suffix -inator is basically synonymous with badass at this point. That being said, it's pretty funny that the Mighty Jinjonator is going to make its first appearance in 21 years in Fall 2019: the same season Terminator: Dark Fate is planned to release. For bonus points, the new movie is a direct sequel to Terminator 2: Judgment Day, the most recent Terminator movie at the time of Banjo-Kazooie's release.
  • Dharkon might not be as scary as he looks to fans of puzzle games, thanks to a more-than-passing resemblence to Meteo, the antagonistic force of a different project of Sakurai's...
  • The Memetic Mutation of Joker being Bayonetta's son becomes this now that Joker is considered top tier and potentially the best character in the game, just as Bayo was in Smash 4. Both characters ended up winning EVO as well.
  • As one of the many ways to differentiate him from Captain Falcon, the Project M version of Ganondorf had his Forward Smash animation reworked to be a backfist instead of an elbow strike (to keep the Warlock Punch after it was replaced by a Cape Reflect). This very same animation rework was given to Captain Falcon in Ultimate.
  • Project M gave Ganondorf a new sword-slash variant of the Warlock Punch before Ultimate Ganondorf replaced his Captain Falcon-esque Forward Smash with a similar looking, though slightly faster slash.
  • In Pokémon Vietnamese Crystal, Charizard's garbled translated name is "SNAKE". The September 2019 wave of SSBU amiibo completes Pokémon Trainer's trio with Squirtle, Ivysaur... and the actual Solid Snake.
  • Another example of Divergent Character Evolution from Project M is Toon Link's Forward Smash becoming a single hit. While it has a different animation, this also happened in Ultimate.
  • Joker's 6th outfit reskins him to look like Goro Akechi in his Crow outfit. Then in Akechi's trailer for Royal, Joker and Akechi do the opposite, with the former giving the latter his exact same haircut and look.
  • One installment in the Fatal Fury series was called Fatal Fury Special. Said game is an update to Fatal Fury 2 that brings back veterans not present in the original release, although not all of them, and refines its gameplay. Things eventually went full-circle with the inclusion of its lead Terry Bogard in this game, which has Special as its subtitle in the Japanese version, brings back every Smash veteran, and improves on Smash 4's gameplay.
  • The King of Fighters '98: Ultimate Match is the version of '98 that has everyone included, and now one of its prominent characters, Terry Bogard, is in this game which also has the subtitle Ultimate and includes every fighter from the previous games.
  • There was a Game Mod in previous games that reskins Mario as Banjo. That said, one of Banjo and Kazooie's moves that isn't based on their games, their F-Air, is basically Mario's without the spike. Not to mention the non-Breegull Blaster version of their Neutral B acts like Mario's fireballs (they bounce off the ground, but cover good distance). They even have a back throw similar to Mario's, as well. If that wasn't enough, he even does Mario's iconic jump pose when he jumps up from a ledge, really sealing the deal.
  • Game Theory was once infamous for creating a rather controversial theory that Sans is Ness, resulting in a memetic spread and running jokes of both characters. One of the screenshots for the Sans Mii Gunner costume has him appear on Magicant. Since that stage takes in place inside Ness' mind, this means Sans is literally Ness.note
  • This Twitter post of Terry and Bowser having drinks was uploaded the year before the former was confirmed, on the exact same month.
  • Nobuo Uematsu, well-known for his work on Final Fantasy VII, composed the main theme for Super Smash Bros. Brawl. One game later, Cloud Strife himself is added as a playable fighter, but the Brawl main theme in its original form is absent. Then in Ultimate, the original Brawl main theme returns as an alternate menu theme, meaning that Uematsu's most well-known original Smash composition and the protagonist of his most famous game are both present.
  • Someone actually predicted that Sans would be a Mii Gunner with a Gaster Blaster arm cannon.
  • In Banjo-Tooie, one of the bosses the duo fight is a pterodactyl named Terry, and 19 years later in 2019, after the 4th DLC Fighters Pass reveal, the duo can fight against another Terry.
  • This satirical blog post becomes all the more hilarious as the so-called requests include Snake, Ridley, King K. Rool, S-Tier Pichu and Nerfec Pichu, all of which made it in, and another suggestion includes "Ice Climbers NOT in Smash 5" which is absolutely not the case.
  • Of all things, the name of an actress. Upon the reveal of Daisy and Ridley as playable characters on the same day, many fans joked that Daisy Ridley (or rather Rey, her character from the Star Wars sequel trilogy) was also playable. This came up again with her middle name after Isabelle's reveal, which is Isobel.
  • On February 28th, 2018, before Ultimate was even revealed, Twitter user @dyla-bell-sky had a dream where they played in a Smash tournament and was able to play as a Piranha Plant. After Piranha Plant was revealed to be a playable character in Ultimate, the tweet gained a lot of traction, and Dyla's follower count doubled.
  • Whilst the infamous "Grinch" leak for Ultimate turned out to be fake, two of the characters implicated in said leak were Banjo and Kazooie. Come E3 2019, and the duo have been announced as DLC.
  • This video, uploaded in 2009, replaces Albert Wesker's voice clips with those of Captain Falcon's. This becomes all the funnier come November 2019, when spirits from Resident Evil were added into the game via Spirit Board event, with Captain Falcon representing Wesker in his spirit battle.
  • Dragon Quest had a spin-off series called Dragon Quest Monsters and one of the games was called Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker released in 2007 for the Nintendo DS. And now in Ultimate, the DQ heroes can face off against Persona 5's Joker. Even better is that the first game in the spin-off series was called Dragon Quest Heroes: Terry's Wonderland, released in 1998 for the Game Boy. If that wasn't enough, the cherry on top is that the spin-off series was critically labeled as a combination of Dragon Quest and Pokémon; and now in Ultimate, both truly do come together in one game!
  • Morgana and Sothis introduce the first and last fighters of the Fighter's Pass, meaning that Cassandra Lee, who voices both of them in English, gets to Bookend the Pass.
  • In the second Sonic Twitter Takeover, there is a question about Smash, a question about Undertale, and a post involving Assassin's Creed. Both of these franchises would join Sonic as Mii Costumes.
  • During one Nintendo Dream interview conducted with Sakurai, while talking about Piranha Plant's moveset variety, he noted how difficult it is to make sword users stand out, joking about how they should use an axe sometimes. Guess what Byleth came with after they got revealed?
  • A Twitter user by the name of SPlatinum_ posted a meme comic where Terry Bogard asks the Smash community not to get upset just because a character they don't want got in, before revealing the last Challenger Pack of the first Fighters Pass to be Byleth. The fact that they got that information correct proves themselves as a glorified prophet.
    • Similarly, a Twitter user known as Francis (AKA franmm127) posted a what-if comic showing what would happen if Byleth got included, getting insults from all sides, only for the fellow Base-Breaking Character Corrin to pat Byleth in support, saying "You'll get used to it.". This came approximately two weeks before the official reveal, no less.
  • Memes regarding Smash being a pseudo-Fire Emblem fighting game (such as Super Fire Emblem Bros.) becomes interesting when Lucina and Byleth's classic route (sans the final boss) consists of only Fire Emblem characters to fight. It's especially interesting in Byleth's case as the memes resurfaced after he was revealed.
  • A Brawl in the Family has Adeliene ask if she can join Smash 4 and show off her moveset by throwing paint everywhere. An annoyed and paint-covered Meta Knight says she has a chance if they changed the rules to "aggravate your opponents to win". Come the Inklings in this game, where they can cover opponents in ink which causes opponents to take more damage making them an aggravating opponent to fight. The comic also shows Adeliene spilling a bucket of paint for her Down B, which is similar to Inkling's Down Smash where they toss a bucket of ink on both in front of them and behind them.

How well does it match the trope?
