Heartwarming / The Addams Family (1964)

Go To

  • In "The Addams Family Goes to School", Wednesday comes home from school crying, upset by the story of a knight slaying a dragon. Gomez immediately takes her in his arms and comforts her as he and Morticia resolve to have a word with the school faculty.
    • Morticia's reasoning for sending the kids to school despite her doubts about the curriculum is that she's seen Wednesday watching the students when they come out for recess, and she thinks she wants to play with them. Despite their unorthodox ideas about education, she still wants her kids to make friends and socialize, just like any good mother would.
    • Gomez is against the idea of enrolling his children in public school because if they're away at school all day, they're away at school all day. As he puts it, why have children if you're just going to get rid of them at the first opportunity? He even sadly tells Morticia he'll be lost without them around the house. He just adores his kids so much, and is so present in their lives, even the idea of them being away for a few hours a day makes him feel lonely.
  • From "The Addams Family Meets a Beatnik", the biker Rocky tells his father, "They may be kooks, but they're MY kinda kooks." After watching countless strangers run in terror from the Addamses, it was surprisingly sweet to meet someone who accepts them (which is, probably, because they are so accepting of him in turn). This also leads to his father coming to accept him as well.
  • Although Played for Laughs and a misunderstanding on her part, seeing Granny Frump Squee over the thought that Gomez wants to marry her (as she was standing next to Morticia) will bring a smile to your face. And, even after she realizes her mistake, she doesn't raise a fuss over it for the sake of her daughter's happiness.
  • "Lurch Learns to Dance" (linked in full from MGM's YouTube channel) is funny and heartwarming in equal doses, as the family goes out of their way to, well, teach Lurch how to dance so he can have fun at the Butlers' Ball. Highlight to Wednesday offering to teach him, and then them putting on a ballet number for the rest of the family.
  • "Mother Lurch Visits the Addams Family":
    • We find out just how much Lurch means to the Addamses. When he confesses that he told his mother that he is the "master of the house," Gomez and Morticia immediately rally everyone to come up with a plan to help him out. Morticia eventually suggests that she and Gomez pretend to be servants, just to make him look good. There's not a moment's hesitation from anyone as they try to find a way to keep Mother Lurch in the dark. It's a sure sign that Lurch isn't just an employee—he's a member of the family.
    • Even though her visit causes a lot of trouble for the Addamses, Lurch's relationship with his mother is quite sweet. When she arrives, she immediately looks for him and pounces on him with a hug. Lurch tries to hug her back, despite the difficulty caused by her being only about half his height.
  • In "Christmas With the Addams Family", Gomez finds a man in a Santa suit collecting money for charity. One scene cut later, he's given the guy a tremendous donation and his suit in exchange for the Santa costume so he can dress up as Santa for his own kids.
    • To be more specific, the guy in the Santa costume was frustated since he did not receive many donations and worried the people at the mission wouldn't receive enough to eat for the holiday. His attitude changes to overjoyed when Gomez donated $25,000 in exchange for borrowing his suit. He is then shown happily ringing his bell and joyfully announcing that dinner was available at the mission.
      • It becomes more amazing since in 1964, that $25,000 today would be over $230,000. Keep in mind, the guy originally asked for $25 to let Gomez borrow his suit. It just shows that for as kooky as he is, Gomez really is a generous man.
